I love Gigabyte boards. If that's the one you like, I'd say you made a good choice. You won't be sorry if you get that one :)

I couldn't tell you. It might support the Phenom CPUs but it doesn't state that anywhere in its specs. I wouldn't bet on it, but it's possible.

Doubt it's any time soon, but if they do, it'll probably be a top end series card, and so out of the realms of this thread anyway. The best thing about ATI's graphics card range right now is that the HD3870 is usable in a budget-conscious machine, and it's a stunning performer. Pound / dollar / euro per frame per second, it's on par with the 8800GT, but with an overall better image quality, and no tweaked drivers to give better frame rates in certain games (at the further expense of image quality).

Another game that will work well for the Budget-Conscious Gamer:

Call of Duty 4

It runs all settings High at 1024 x 768 on the 7600GT

Indoor FPS = min average high 30s, max average high 90s

Outdoor FPS = min average low 20s, max average high 30s occasional lag in high action

Plays fairly smooth and remains consistent.

On the X1800XT it runs all high at 1280 x 1024

Indoor FPS = min average low 40s, max average high 90s

Outdoor FPS = min average low 30s, max average low 50s, very seldom lags in high action

Plays VERY smooth and remains consistent.

Looks like a solid performer. Anybody with a 7600GT will be happy. Anybody with an X1800XT will think twice before an upgrade.

COD4 runs at 1920x1200 all maxed on my PC, and will run alright at 2560x1600 as long as you don't use a sniper! lol
However, COD4 is by no means the most demanding of games. UT3 runs at half the frame rate of COD4, and as for Crysis, well. Forget about it, really.

Also, remember that UT3 is considered a very well optimized game in its own right. So the frame rates achieved in CoD4 with the relative graphics are insane.

Crysis taxes systems to their limits. Mine runs it okayish at 1920 x 1200 MAXed but it gets a bit choppy. I run it at 1680 x 1050 to keep it comfortable...

Methinks it's time for a video upgrade... the performance bothers me... so much for "high-end" :(

On the other hand, all the other new games out run beautifully maxed at 1920 x 1200. This could just be the "Oblivion" of its day; The game no system will run well.

Trouble is, there's nothing you can really upgrade to. SLI doesn't really have much of an effect with Crysis, you'll just have to live with it until a faster card comes out. You're correct about Crysis being 2007's 'oblivion' game. Just wait for a bit!

*whiny voice* But waiting is the hard part... lol

I know it's a bit extravagant, always having the newest. But it's less a status thing and more being able to enjoy a generation's games the way that they're meant to be.

I am not my hardware. It does not equate to the length of my "e-penis" lol

But it does affect my enjoyment of games.

So If I have the money... well... I'm 17... what the heck else am I gonna spend it on? lol

EDIT: Notice how both builds started as budget PCs with upgrade potential... well... costs more over time, but it costs less up front to buy one or two big parts at a time. It's more manageable that way :)

hehe, well precisely. People wonder why someone my age owns two dual-core PCs and a 30" monitor. My simple answer to that is I don't drink, I don't smoke and I don't drive. Money saved is money earned!

Which brings us back to our budget subject. You might remember that my system started with a Socket 939 X2 3800+. I still have my original X850XT.

(Kinda stated in my earlier post)
Budget building is my passion. I started both PCs as budget builds... then I got a decent job. So I did what I had originally planned. I upgraded :)

It's more manageable to buy a new part when it comes out than it is to buy a whole new system for each generation. I make enough money to do it easily and still put away a considerable amount. So I don't think I'm squandering my money. In fact, my PCs are both used regularly so I view each new part as an investment in something I love.

I feel much the same way. My PC is where I spend most of my time, so I may as well devote what I can afford to it. My PC was built new in June 2006. It's CPU and RAM are now in my server. It's old motherboard was also in there (before it failed), but even that now runs a new one. Even the new motherboard I got for my CPU has since been replaced (also because it failed). The PSU's now in my server too, so that also counts as an upgrade. I've changed the cooler on my graphics card, I've changed the sound card, I've changed the main hard drive (and bought 5 additional ones since), need to change the DVDRW drive due to starforce, upgraded my speakers twice, changed the monitor twice (since getting the PC), changed the keyboard and mouse, and changed more case fans than you would believe. I now have at least a dozen spares!

Hehe, my third PC is essentially a spare PC, but for the fact that hardly any of its parts are compatible with my current build. It's my current intention to repair it so that it's up to scratch again though, too much money sitting not being used!

Oh yeah, get an AM2 motherboard. A cheap dual core like a 6000+ or maybe a 3800+ for quite a bit less.

And then throw in an X1950Pro. Instant LAN machine :)

I think it's a solid multi-purpose PC. Spending the extra on the 1900XT 512MB and 2.2GHz dual-core made a HUGE difference on your future proofing. Even more so with the Core 2 Duo.

You are able to run most, if not all games available on absolute maximums. Of course, given the few like Crysis and Oblivion which both offer immense environments with rich environment detail and offer frame rates below that of the average game.

I'd say that is the most extreme long lasting video card I have ever seen.

A worthwhile investment in my opinion :)

Definitely. It didn't come cheap, but then I paid more since back then, I had my PC built for me (shock horror!) however, back then Aria built what you put in your basket from their site, so there weren't any components there was a degree of concern over, and the built cost was only £47, so I did it to keep nagging parents off my back. This was only 8 months after a cheap PSU toasted half my last PC you see!
I'm more than happy with my X1900XT, especially after changing the heatsink so it's near-silent (no fans, the only noise is from the ICs themselves!) I will be keeping it for quite a lot longer, unless something ridiculously powerful comes out at a low price (heh, fat chance!)
