I'm willing to bet a substantial amount of money that your hard drive isn't messed up. It's something else causing the problem. The hard drive powering down is a feature built into windows so that when you get a blue screen, the hard disk is shut off to prevent any bad data being written that could damage your windows install. I certainly believe the problem stems from RAM, the motherboard, or some dodgy drivers.

Then do it! You can keep your graphics card, replacing the rest doesn't need to be at all expensive. I know prices are somewhat elevated where you live but even so, it shouldn't be too hard to make a decent value build. You can get something like an E4400 with a basic Gigabyte P35 board, an OCZ Stealthxstream or Thermaltake purepower PSU would suffice. In the US that's barely more than $250. RAM's dirt cheap too, even for 2GB of DDR2. I reckon you could get a decent PC including the case made from your old parts for no more than $350 in the US. What would that work out for you?

Yeah, keep the 8600GTS. It's still a good card.
A good system can be built around your video card for el cheapo :)

Hardly budget-conscious if you ask me, anything that works out well above $1000 is starting to head towards the 'dream' category. Besides, you're spending a lot of money to get a Phenom there. Are you sure it's worth it?

indeed that is my "Dream" pc...
i was thinking i should buy a AM2/AM2+ mobo and a X2 cpu for now...later on when i do need quad core technology i'll upgrade it to X4...then it should be cheaper...
AMD Athlon64 X2 5000+ Black edition
Gigabyte 790FX mobo...for ATI gpu...what happens if i change my mind and bought a nvidia gpu instead of ati?...790FX chipset will be no use...
and the rest stays the same...

Or what if you bought a P35 chipset board, stuck a cheap Core 2 Duo in it for now, then get a Penryn later?
That makes more sense, as a Core 2 is faster than an X2 now, and a Penryn will be faster than a Phenom... seems like a no brainer to me, especially when relatively inexpensive P35 boards support the new CPUs.
As for the GPU, you can use any type of graphics card with any type of chipset, you just obviously can't use SLI without an nvidia chipset.

Then don't be, the vast majority of the time fanboyism earns you inferior products at higher prices.

Those companies are there to make money, and you are there to spend yours WISELY. There is NO point in fanboyism, they don't care aout you, they care about your money.
Don't attach emotional values to a product.

I don't know the answer, but that seems really confusing. Wouldn't the numbers go up as the cpu gets faster?

Well, I don't. I don't advise crossfire or SLI, simple as that, I think it's a waste of money if you're concerned about budget.
Buy a Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R and a single HD3870.

That all depends on what you want to do. In 5 years time the PC will almost certainly still work fine. However, it will probably be utterly useless for gaming after about 3 or 4 years. Think about how an Athlon XP 2500+ with 1GB of PC2700 and a 9800XT will run games now. Not exactly high end stuff is it?
For the GPU I'd recommend an HD3870. As for the RAM, if you can afford the 4GB go for it, if not, stick with 2GB.

well yeah of course it wil still be running, what i'm asking is will it be able to run games in the next 5 years...if i upgrade the GPU only...
about the GPU which brand do you prefer for the HD3870 sapphire, GeCube or PowerColor?

i would suggest either the E6750, the E4550, or the E2180.
as for mobo, i have many a build with no problem with the same gigabyte mobo sam has shown, but the L instead of the R, the Abit IP35 pro, or the P5K-E
