Sorry I'm subscribed to 940+ threads, it's a little hard to remember some random thread where bad media was the cause of RSOD/boot failure. That describes half the threads on AD. People refuse to use good media and wonder why their backups don't work. That gets tiresome.

@LiquidusX
You can try to rebuild using my guide on Gnie's ExPERT (on page 18) to see if it's a success. Are you talking about MGS2: Sons of Liberty? or MGS2: Substances? If you're talking about MGS2: Sons of Liberty (US version), then you can just use Gnie's Expert or try my 50CENT method, either one should work. I rebuilt MGS2: S.O.L with Gnie's ExPERT and it worked flawlessly on a YUDEN000T02 media. Let me know what's your results.

It does the same thing, but because of the massive user errors involved in the other rebuilding methods, Gnies' Expert is like the dummy's guide to rebuilding PS2 games. It's a simple, effective alternative to other rebuilding methods. It may not work on every game, but it seems to work pretty frequently.
@ Alkohol, I believe he is referring to MGS2: Substance, as it's DVD-9. There is a rebuild guide here: http://www.freewebs.com/mybackups/downloads.htm

Hi There! I have a question might sound dumb. But hear I go.When burning a PS2 games with DVD Decrypter after reading the ISO you get 2 files on your hard drive a ISO File in GB's & a MDS Image in KB's. Now which file do you burn? Also which file do you patch for online? Or do you use a program to combined the two files. Then burn...Help Please.Later Bra

Load the MDS file into DVD Decrypter.
1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter.
Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on a quality 8x DVD-R.
2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341 If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544 If you really want to do the PS2 backup thing right, pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I only burn to TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. So far I've never had a lag, skip, freeze, or boot failure since I switched to Taiyo Yuden's. With results like that, why would I use anything else? The brand of media you use means very little.
The key determinant of media quality is the Media ID. For info on the Media ID, check the bottom of this thread.
Try this link for all types of different info on media quality, compatibility, and console reliability: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
3. Q. Do I need some type of mod to play PS2 backups or imports?
A. Yes you need a modchip: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2 Swap Magic: http://swapmagic3.com/ Memory Card Exploit (Doesn't work with v.11 PS2 and later): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 HD Loader: http://www.hdloader.com.au/hardinstall#prepare or

Thanks for your info! I guess this is the answer I was looking for. Step 7-
Next Select your ISO That you extracted on to your hard drive by click the folder outlined in blue.(the ISO File Not the MDS)
Then Make sure your Write Speed is at the corresponding speeds.
(Blank DVD R-8x max write speed Burn at 4X)
(Blank DVD R-4x max write speed Burn at 2X)
After you have completed that click the button outlined in Red. In the picture below. But when patching DNAS for online is it still the ISO file you use?

Yep, Tokijin, you did it. I burned my new ISO with a TY-DVD and it works great. To everyone who use AD-threads, believe Tokijin at his word. For the TY-DVD's, you pay a little bit more, buth it's great media. Thanks again Tokijin.

I found out the Gnie's ExPERT should be unziped like this
there should be a foler by this name ExPERT-Plugins and all plugins inside it
ExPERT.exe should not be put in the same folder otherwise the plugins will not load
ExPERT.exe should be in the same area as the ExPERT-Plugins
(ExPERT-Plugins folder only)

You should ALWAYS choose the MDS file to burn with DVD Decrypter. The only time when you burn with the ISO is when you have to manually rebuild the game only.

Or when you download a game and only an iso file is present. That's it. Always use the mds file when possible.

Thanks Guys! So when I patch DNAS for online I use the MDS file for patching also. Well I've used the ISO file with a patch and the MDS file with a patch they both work.WHY? Also the ISO file is bigger its in GB where the MDS file is in KB.You would think the ISO file has more info in it! I use DVD Decrypter to read the game then Windip to patch it.Then DVD Decrypter to write it.I've used each file to patch and they both go online whats with that Bra! So I do a copy of both ISO and MDS.I wish someone could tell me more about why to use the MDS file. It's weird why they both work. But the ISO is GB's is that not bigger then MDS Kb's?According to this link I should use the ISO to patch and burn for online games http://forums.psxforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=117528 Well thanks for the help guys.Later Bra.....

iso file contains all the information, while the mds simply tells DVD Decrypter how to burn the mds. the mds is extremely useful in cases where the iso is split into 2 files, the mds tells DVD Decrypter in which order to burn.

Is there any difference in the way a PS2 backup plays when the backup was burned on a DL disk vs rebuilding a game by the Alkohol method described here? What I'm trying to find out is that a DL disk costs appx $4 and a regular dvd disk is appx .20-.40 (depending on brand) and if they play the same then it is better to just use a regular dvd disk and rebuild it according to the Alkohol method. Is that correct? Thanks
