It depends on what method you're using to boot your backups. Swap Magic doesn't support DVD-9 games, so DL media is irrelevant. Quality modchips like the DMS 4 Pro SE, Matrix Infinity, and Crystal Chip 1.1 support DL backups. The rule of thumb with modchips is that if their firmware is upgrabeable via flash, they support DVD-9 backups, otherwise they don't. My point is if you're using Swap Magic, DL media is irrelevant, it only supports DVD-5 or single layer discs.

Yes indeed, that is more cheaper and it's the best way to go. Even if you're using top notch media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Hitachi's Maxell (mij), it still cost less than any DL media regardless. That's why I prefer to have all my PS2 games (any over 4.3GB) rebuild.

Can someone please help??
I'm banging my head against the wall trying to get GT4 to back up properly.
I've made several drink coasters so far using various methodes I've found around this forum.
Usually the problem I get is that the game will boot to the warning screen, then will lock up.
I'm using Maxell DVD+R media
Any sugestions??
Also does anyone know where I can get Sonix's full GT4 Tool Kit?
Thanks in advance...

Go back over all the steps. Booktype the DVD+R's to DVD-ROM. What's the Media ID on those Maxell's?
53. Q. What is Booktyping?
A. Booktyping is the ability to burn a DVD+R so it that appears as a pressed DVD-ROM in any DVD-ROM drive it's inserted in. If you booktype DVD+R's, this allows for greater compatibility with most stand alone DVD players, including your PS2. Your burner has to support booktyping (most newer ones do).
Booktyping with Nero and DVD Decrypter: http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
91. Q. What is the Media ID of a DVD and how can I find it?
A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. You can also use a program called DVD Identifier which is very useful. You can find it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...
Last but not least you can use DVD Info Pro: http://www.dvdinfopro.com/ Compare the Media ID to this link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm Huge List of Media ID's (Thanks to DogBomb): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431

Well formatting your HD to NTFS would probably alleviate the problem. It probably can't the DNA ID because it's split into three files. Make sure you backup your data before formatting your HD. This is for Windows XP.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/co...
From Permiggs:
As for the size problem, you might be running FAT32. FAT32 only allows any single file to be up to 4000Mb. I know you're not burning ISO's here, but this will set you up good, not only you'll be able to handle bigger files in the future but it will smooth your pc up a bit.
Here, follow these steps and change it to NTFS:
First, back up your data. The conversion process almost always works flawlessly, but there is no point in taking the risk.
Click the <Start> button.
Click <Run>.
Enter "cmd" into the text field labeled "Open".
Click the <OK> button.
Enter the command "vol c:" to find the volume label for the C: partition.
Enter the command "convert c: /fs:ntfs" to convert the C: partition from FAT32 to NTFS.
When prompted, enter the volume label for the partition

Hi there I've now have a ntfs drive so i used DVD Decrypter it made two files 1 mds image and the other iso.
Then i opened ps2nfo id selected the image, scanned for dnas then this it what it keeps saying.
Image File 'C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\starwars.ISO' (1 part, 4479Mb, 2048 bytes/sector).
The following files have been located for possible patching:-
DNAS300.IMG;1, IOPRP300.IMG;1,
ERROR: The Image File is not DN*S enabled or uses an unsupported version!
WIERD.
So I then used discidinsertor and it says.
this is not a legitamate IOP replacement file.
Just can't get my head round it why won't this copy but the rest of my games will I really needs the backup with dnas because my kids are just destroying my originals.
Please help.

Is there anywhere on the web to download ps2 ISOs? Going to a game/movie rental store to copy games gets expensive after many trips.

8. Q. What should I use to download PS2 games?
A. Bit torrent, P2P, IRC, or newsgroups. Bit torrent is the easiest and most common way. You need a BT client like Bit Tornado, Azureus, Bitlord, Bitcomet, Shareza, etc.

A. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/249297

Okay,
Excellent how-to on the Gran Turismo 4. I've successfully backed up my original of the game. I did run into one problem that I thought I would share. After doing the rebuild with the Gran Turismo Ripper, then heading to the part to add the files to CD/DVD Gen 1.5, I was getting "can't read file" errors.
I concluded that it was my antivirus program (Defender Pro), causing the issue. After disabling the antivirus software, the entire process of downsampling, rebuilding, etc, went a great deal faster. Adding files to cd/dvd gen 1.5 wasn't a problem either.
Thanks for a very informative and visual walkthrough on the backup process of that game. It was surely a learning experience, considering this rebuild required different tools that I've used before when rebuiding other games. The only difference between my master and my backup, is that the intro music does not play. However, during game play, the background music is there.
