Anybody buying 8x TY's (instead of the 16x) to save a little money? Or is everybody going for the burn speed & saying the heck with 8x?
I'm not after quick burning so 4x Verbs are doing fine for me even though I can burn at 16x (with 16x media) if I wanted to.

I'll be burning 8X +R T02 TYs until the 500+ I have are gone. Don't mind waiting a few extra minutes for those beauties.
@all with BenQ 1650 drives.
I've all but turned off the QSuite software and find that my burns are quicker and just as good. Even on some CMC mags I have around for experimentation.

I'm with garmoon - I'm sticking w/ 8x mainly. Plus they're cheaper so what's not to like :)
I do though spend a few extra an buy the 16x silver inkjet.

I suppose you bought a 600 pack with 500 or so left. Not a bad idea!! Burned 200 of those 8x silver/inkjet -R TY's myself & they are very good discs. I'll stick with the 4x Verbs though till I can't get anymore then go back to 8x TY's. Yes I've burned 16x TY's (under the Sony brand) & they were very good.

No, I bought 50 packs of Sony 8X when they were on sale locally at $15 each and accumulated over 600 of them.
And docTY says that TY has not made any Sony 16X discs. Correct me people if I'm wrong so I can start hunting those.

@Garmoon,
I've found 3 tubs of the 16X TYG-03 disks under the Sony brand, all are the -R variety, haven't yet found the +R under the Sony brand. Look for the white octagonal spacer on top of the spindle. If you see a grey disk you have the SonyD-16 disks.

So $180 for 600 discs? You got a steal!! Cheaper then the $216 Supermediastore would charge for 600 TY discs. But then you bought over 600 so you still got a bargain. Hope all of it was TY with the white octogonal spacer. If not then the rest of the non TY media (in 8x) is coded Sony D21 if I remember right & is still good media.
I've bought some TY Sony for both 8 & 16x. The 8x is gone & the 16x is very hard to find in the stores where I live.

I want to make sure you are talking about the DVD-R discs and NOT the DVD+R discs. If I remember right (from docTY) Sony IS NOT going to outsource to TY for their DVD+R 16X discs. I know for a fact that they have some DVD-R TYG03 16X discs out there, cause I have some. :P
I also have the 8X DVD+R (YUDEN T02) as garmoon does. NOT 500 tho. :P bout 300....hehehe.
JUST wanting to clear this up cause you might cause a stampede on whatever store might carry them. :P

I knew what to look for-all were TYs.
Edit: Correction-I only have 375 of them left-not 500+. Woe is me.
@blivetNC
tThanks for the -R info- I don't use the -R variety- just +Rs, but will start looking for those with the octagonal spacer. I love treasure hunts.LOL

my apologies if i didn't make myself clear way back when... :) greensman is correct, i made the statement of TY's NOT outsourcing to the Sony brand for the 16x DVD+R format, as far as the 16x DVD-R (TYG03), i too have a few 50 packs of Sony brand that is Taiyo Yuden made~ :) had to see for myself despite having plenty of TYs silver shiny in the DVD-R format in stock :P
so, bottom line AT THIS POINT IN TIME and also regarding past Sony-TY 8x speed rated media collaborations, in which the octagonal white spacer theory GENERALLY (90% of the time) does apply, the exception would be i have a few 50-packs of Sony 8x MADE IN JAPAN DVD+R packs with the circular/round WHITE spacer that do in fact yield YUDEN000T02 TYs, in that case, it's more about the country of origin more so than the spacer shape:
Sony 8x DVD-R MIJ : TYG02 Taiyo Yuden made
Sony 16x DVD-R MIJ : TYG03 Taiyo Yuden made
Sony 8x DVD+R MIJ : YUDEN000T02 Taiyo Yuden made
if going by the white octagonal spacer in finding Taiyo Yuden media under the Sony brand name, PLEASE be aware that if Sony decides to change their form of packaging (using diff. shapes/colors of spacer in the near future) that the #1 criteria that MUST be satisfied is that the media MUST BE MADE IN JAPAN to have a chance of being Taiyo Yudens...that is a fact and not a "theory" :)
another point worth noting, i recently found a handful of 25-pack spindles of Sony brand media that were MIJ and had NO SPACER whatsoever on top, 8x DVD+R rated, you guessed it, YUDEN000T02s genuine Taiyo Yudens :) i assume this was old stock @ my local Staples and i wiped out their shelves with the 4 spindles they had left (100 pieces total- pricematched to Circuit City sale of $6.99/25-pack + 10% lowest price guarantee)...maybe i was lucky, your mileage will inevitably vary from one state to another~ good luck

i've been using the 8x thermals and i gotta say they are incredible. even the speed is better than any other 8x that i have used of course after they are phased out i'll be using the 16x's.
@doc
lucky you. stores in my area almost NEVER have mij sonys. they are always mits. i've seen some mij in 25 packs but never 50s or 100s. but im not spending $.50/disc when i can get tys online for less then $.30/disc
however the maxell pro cdr's in my area are always mij and yes are always ty's. i generally get a 98 score on them even at 48x burn :)

@Sickley and all,
K-Mart is selling the 8X DVD+R and 16X DVD+R 25 packs for $6.99 +tax.
I know that most stores will price match so go and get them while you can. :) Sorry for the late post and hopefully all you guys already knew that. :)
....gm
btw MIJ DVD+R 8X are going to be YUDEN TO2's (TY's) in case you haven't caught on by now. :)

OOPs. lol.
I just realized I wasn't clear enough on the store price matching thing. :P K-Mart as far as I know no longer price matches BUT BestBuy, Circuit City, Staples, Office Depot, Office Max, and the list goes on should price match. I've never had any of those stores ask more than "where's the add or call the store".
Sorry again if any of you were confused. :)

That really stinks Sickley. NOT to brag but in my small little town we have on the way back to the house from my oldest's school Office Max, Circuit City, Staples, CompUSA, and a couple of other little stores like WalGreens and Hastings. Now if I want to go out of my way. LOL. I can travel about 1.5 miles and get to Office Depot, Best Buy, K-Mart and 4 WalMarts at my disposal. :P
Nice to live in a small town with all the amenities. :D
....gm
btw has anyone found some TY treasure at the other stores?? Thinking about an early evening road trip. ;)

its quite funny actually. well over 10 walmarts, 2 bestbuys, 2 circuit citys, 3 targets, 2 office depots, 2 kmarts, 4 staples, 3 sams clubs - all within 2 hrs drive. sadly most are not close enough to warant a drive for one purchase. and there is/was a compusa in about 1.5 hrs but i think they are all closing down right?
