so as far as what I make from reading, if I am using PSO 1&2 "PLUS" version with out a router, I am stuck between a Sh!t and a Fart, and wasted 35 bucks?
i bought the original for $25 from EB games, and didn't return the plus yet... so i don't have a buy back price for it.
but, regardless, the original version of PSO I & II worked fine.
still haven't gotten the chance to rip or serve/stream any games.
I'm gonna compare phoenix and paradox. and I will figure out exactly how to get them to work with a router without dangerously putting your server in the DMZ. If you're gonna do that, just buy a switch; and make all the sh*tty people that your downloading torrents from that want to port sniff you happy. (that was sarcasm)

Bigflavor, I have a dedicated computer I put together just for the gamecube, so I am not worried about screwing anything up. it is a old p3 800 with almost 400mb ram and old geforce 1 card and a realtek nic, nothing speacial, just old crap sitting around but I am sure that it is good enough just for the purpose of making backup of my own store bought games. I am not really into downloading torrents of riped iso's, and I am willing to use my pc as a kind of guinnie pig for tests to try to get this going, I am getting pso 1&2 original from ebay and I would like to play with the plus version and maybe pso 3. I am just lacking in knowledge on how to do so. I am willing to do this because with two young children, I have had to rebuy way to many games, I could have bought a ps2 with hdd with the amount of games I had to rebuy.

Well I spent some time on this for a bit. and I've blown 2 Gamecubes and I have 2 in parts and 1 fully functional. but from what I can tell the only way to hack this thing is with some sort of mod chip that will override the current GameCube DVD drives firmware. I did take the firmware out of one of the units and did download it to .bin but to be honest I really don't know much about firmwares. I think costas or what ever his name is. Has it right with 21 wires going to the firmware. you might get it down lower but if you want full to fully take over that firmware you will need about 11 wires to over take the firmware. And I think there has to be some other form of copy protections other than the DVD drives firmware so I'll have to keep digging. but I'm talking to another guy who is a really good in firmwares and I'll see if he can help me make a modifid version of this firmware to not seak the stamped disc. and also see if he can find that barcode search in there too. I'm pretty sure its in there. If not its going to be very simular to a PS2 chip where it has to inject a barcode singnal to the Proc. which in turn you would have to steel that barcode off a working game and burn that to a chip and program a routine to send it. I'm hoping we can just hack this all in the dvd's firmware but I think thats going to be just luck.
It looks like nintendo did a good job on protecting this unit. And if a mod chip was to come out. it would get sued because its going to require copywrite code burned into the chip. the only way someone could leagley get around it would be be a publisher and write a game and then sell that barcode to a chip maker. Nintendos was smart with this unit.

All you need to know about firmware is that it is like a kind of driver for hardware. The firmware gets written to the units memory, firmware is usually released to make something function better, or differently... in this case the disk drive.

Can some one please tell me what the serial port on the bottom of the GC is used for? and if there is a way of utilizing it? My GC already has the high speed port and the broadband port taken up by the BBA and the GB adapters, but there still is one port left.

Probably the modem. Nintendo did briefly manufacture dial-up modems for the Gamecube.
PS2 - v8
Mod - Magic V
Burner - CenDyne (Pioneer) DVR-A05
Media - Anything Cheap
Gamecube w/Broadband Adapter
Phantasy Star Online
Animal Crossing Loader v1.4
Phantasy Star Uploader v1.1
Gamecube ISO Ripping Server v1.0.0.29

IceMonkey,
The modem would use the same slot as the BBA, since it is the same size, I have read that there were plans for an hard drive add on at one point, but I guess that was dropped. if the other serial port is able to handle a HD it would be nice to see if some one can make some sort of connector, but I guess there would still be the problem of getting it to boot with out a readable disk, the pso hack may have to be used. hehe, please dont mind me, I am just thinking outside of the cube.

Hello everyone. The reason I have stumbled upon your forum here is becuase I been searching all over for all these programs that let you save files from your memory card to your computer. You might end my search by answering one question. The reason I'm looking for all this stuff is because I play PSO and recently my data got corrupted. I am now just hoping that I can use one of these programs to save the data to my computer and somehow salvage it by putting it on another card replacing the corrupted data or somthing. If this is all futile then I guess I give up. If not or if your not sure I'm willing to try anything. Right now I'm tinkering around with the psul v1.1. The directions I've found here are pretty simple so far until I get to the part where I actually start psul. It says to use the DOS prompt: psul -s. But when I enter it, it just say bad command or file name (or somthing lile that). Any suggestions?

what are you all doing exactly?
you're just double clicking on psul.exe?
or are you typing cmd into run, going to the directory psul is in, and then typing psul -s. then, in phantasy star online, connecting to an "online game"?
if it's the latter, you're doing it right. if you're running it after you've loaded the "online game," and it opens real quick then closes... it's done with what it's meant to do (whatever that is).
let us know.
peace,
matt

What do you mean by "cmd into run". To be honest I'm not too familiar with windows. The psul folder is located in C:\WINDOWS. I then go to MS-DOS prompt from programs and type in "psul -s". I've also tried opening the file in C:\ called Command and doing the same thing. Either way it says Bad command or file name. I do all this before going online in PSO.

Go to start, then to 'run', its on that list. then when on the run screen type in 'cmd', itll bring up an ms-dos prompt window. then enter what you need into that...

you're not in the directory that psul is located...
here's what you should do:
find the directory where psul.exe is located. (ex: c:\my downloads\psul\)
write it down.
now go to start then click run, and type cmd then click ok.
at the command prompt type:
cd [the path where psul is located, that you wrote down]
so... i'd type:
cd c:\my downloads\psul
hit enter. this brings you into the directory where psul is located.
now type dir and hit enter
this will list the "directory" of files and folders.
make sure you see psul.exe in there.
type psul -s and hit enter
and then load phantasy star online and start an online game.
if you configured your gamecube correctly, it should download whatever it downloads to your gamecube. and you're done.
if i get motivated, i'm gonna make a tutorial with screenshots shortly. I'm come across real world demand for such a thing.
hope that helps.
peace,
matt

Okay, I dumped everything into the folder that says My Documents. So when you double click on My Documents, you see seven files:crt0.s, czn-ps11.nfo, czn-test.dol, file_id.diz, psul, readme, and whats new. So I opened that command prompt (I had to actually type out command instead of cmd. Dont know if that matters.) and typed: cd c:\My Documents\psul
After I do this it says "Too many parameters - Documents/psul"
What's the cause of this new obsticle?

No its 100mbit but not full duplex I watched it switch speeds on my little hub I use. It starts out at 10 and switchs to 100 when you select 100mbit But some games are still chopy I think that because of garbage data.

No, Garbage data is written so that the game can occupy more of the allocated DVD space (a kind of filler really), just reduces file fize not transfer rates...
