Sam, do you measure your frames/s with fraps? I've never seen my frames go over 60. And I don't mean I'm lagging in performance. It acts as though 60 is its ceiling. What other benching options are there. GOOD ones.

Omega: Yeah, you must have left VSync on. I don't use Fraps for Left 4 Dead, as the net_stats option displays the frame rate and the server latency on the screen for me. Other games I do of course use Fraps.

Well, maybe, but I was actually referring to the VSync in game. If you're using Fraps passively (to monitor frame rate, not to record video) that button shouldn't do anything.

Hmmm. Thanks for the tidbits anyway. I actually don't have any games installed at the moment. Still rebuilding from the veloci crash. And this is NOT a permanent drive either. Though I guess I could treat it as such, then clone the data to replacement drive.

So you did buy the GTS250. Ah well, your loss :P

Now you are making me feel guilty :S

Left 4 Dead 2 isn't amazingly demanding on the CPU, but a single core CPU is likely to struggle with any modern game. L4D2 is just one example, and a relatively benign example at that.

What do you mean by if I have the HD4850 instead of the gts250, that I would be better off? Tell me the difference about that. And is the difference really big?

Also, my CPU is dual core so I should be fine right?

yeah thats true. then again if he is gaming at a low res i guess it wont make that much difference using a p4?

Hey, would you consider 1024 x 768 a low resolution game setting? And does p4 really suck at games?

Nah well, you're just spending $50 for nothing is the main reason I mention it. That's not too much an issue if you play loads of different games, but if you primarily play Left 4 Dead, you've also spent $50 to get worse performance.
A dual core CPU should be fine for Left 4 Dead, since the stock E5200 in my server can run the game OK.
However, if you have a Pentium 4, you don't have a dual core. There were no dual core Pentium 4s by name. There were dual core versions, but they were called Pentium Ds.
You may have a Pentium 4 with hyperthreading, which will show up as 2 CPUs in Task Manager, but really it's a single core, and yes, single core P4s do suck at games.
1024x768 is also quite a low resolution for games. 1680x1050 is the typical standard these days. The good news is that at such a low resolution, even a GTS250 will have no issue with Left 4 Dead.

Yea, mine is pentium D. and l4d really prefers the HD4850 huh? Well, that sucks then. But oh well, I already purchased the gts250. Finally, a good news! haha, coz I only plan on playing it on a 1024x768 resolution anyway so I expect no lagging.

It's quite possible, but the vast majority of 17" LCDs were 1280x1024.

So how would a GTS 250 compare to an 8600Gt? I think that calling the GTS250 as such, could be misleading. The GTX 260 is awesome to say the least. if the 250 is nowhere near the performance, then that is misleading. At least to the untrained eye... LOL!

The GTX260 216-core is probably around 30% faster than the GTS250 1GB. The 512MB version I'm not sure, maybe 35-40. I'm not saying the GTS250 is alone in being mediocre value for money, the GTS250 is in fact the best value card nvidia offer right now, despite being massively outclassed by the HD4850. The GTX260 is worse. Sure, it's a powerful card, but it costs an absolute fortune. You can get an HD4890 for less than the price of a GTX260.

And now the funny part. LOL! YOU recommended Nvidia at the time of my purchase. Due to GTA IV favoring Nvidia hardware. Its ok. I don't regret my purchase. Not in the least. Perhaps it was slightly spendy. The way I see it, is I've had ZERO troubles with this card. If I had bought anything else, who knows...
I guess in the near future though, I'll be trying ati out even on the GTA IV machine :D But code has probably changed since then.

If GTA4 is all you play, the GTX260 will always be a better card than the HD4870. It just carries quite a hefty price premium. That's more of an issue now than when you bought your card really. It was a much closer call at that time whether Geforces or Radeons were better value, but now, until I see some price drops show up, the GTS250 is the only geforce anyone should ever even consider buying, and that's only because the HD4850 isn't available in the UK any more.

Hmmm. Perhaps I should stick with the 260 for now then. And when the next killer game comes out, that's optimized for ati, THEN I'll consider an upgrade :) Usually Games have to be EPIC for me to even give them the time of day. They have to make serious headlines LOL! I haven't even played Left 4 dead II that much. Paid nearly 50 bucks for it too LOL!

so sam, what games favour the gts250? And no, 1024 x 768 resolution on my 19inch LCD is good enough for me. Well, maybe because I have 'untrained' eyes. LOL

19" screens usually produce either 1280x1024 or 1440x900 - I'd recommend trying them, even if you don't use such a resolution on your desktop as it will make things much clearier and probably easier to see. In all but the most demanding games, the GTS250 can easily handle this.
As for games where the 250 comes out on top compared to the HD4850, mainly nvidia-biased titles, GTA4, Cryostasis, Batman Arkham Asylum, and pretty much any game that supports PhysX (whether you use PhysX or not).
