Hey guys! Ive been reading alot on this thread and it gave me the confidence to change the KEM-400AAA and it worked really nice. I just have really bad loading times now. And it has been that way since i changed it. It sounds a bit more than usual when its reading the discs. Do i need to buy another KEM-400AAA or is there something i could do to this one?

From what I have read that can be a symptom of the laser. Did you get it on EBay? I received two bad ones but have two more coming from a different seller.

i BOUGHT a broken PS3 and took the drive from it and it worked. The nice thing is I know it was a Sony drive.
Not sure what else to tell her.

Maybe this is the controller chip that needs to be replaced.
I spoke with one repair guy that said he must replace the controller chip when he installed a new BR or he wont warranty it. And I spoke with another guy that said it didn't matter, so I don't know what is the right answer

maybe so, But i tried the laser in the other three ps3's that i have and still no read, the other three that i have possibly has the same issue though(chip)...I just hate to purchase four lasers and for some reason that do not solve the problem... 2 out of the four lasers shows a purple light ...that gives me reason to believe they are good but no way to test them if all the ps3's i have has bad controller chips...

I guess it?s possible but not probable that all three have the same issue. Do you have a working PS3 you can cannibalize just to troubleshoot with? Maybe you just insert the lasers in the working PS3 to see if they function. It is possible all of the lasers are bad. These things are not rebuilt very well so you need to find someone that actually tests these things before they ship them out. I'm going through that now.

I'm havin the same problem as many others I have a 80gb motorstorm edition ps3 and it isnt reading any disk blu-ray, cd,dvd or any games. Could it be the laser and should I buy the KEM-400AAA.?

Probably Yes. But check what type of laser your PS3 uses before ordering a replacement. You need to figure out if the laser carriage has one or two lenses.

After reading a few pages of this thread it seems like I need a new laser.
So, I've signed up here to be sure.
When I start up my PS3, the laser moves and goes up and down, but doesn't light up. Nothing spins, ever. Inserts and ejects just fine (although, a small problem, below). Just to be sure though, it shouldn't spin if the laser doesn't light up? Or is it possible both the motor and laser need replaced?
And the slight problem I'm having other than that is, when I took apart the drive to look at the laser, there was one piece that fell out from the loading mechanisms. Just a little thing right where the disc enters the tray (before the disc even gets to the spinning things that pull it the rest of the way inside). But it slides on and off (as does the one on the other side), so I figured no problem. I may have messed something else up accidentally, but nothing I noticed. The only problem I have is that now I have to really push the disc (as in exert more force than usual) about a full halfway before it recognizes there's a disc in. And when I first start, if there isn't a disc in, it will think one is going in and try to pull a disc in for a few seconds (then giving up). I don't know if its really worth fixing as its not (sorta) broke... but tomorrow I gotta check my laser's model so if it's an easy fix I will.
BTW, is there any other way to tell what model the laser is without having to take the drive completely apart?
EDIT: NVM, found the answer to my BTW on another page... so 410 has two lasers (and lasers meaning actually having one blue diode inside a lens and a red diode inside another lens, right? Its just not easy to tell when most people use 'laser' or 'lens' as a really general term.)

Another suggestion:
I seem to be having good luck with the lasers with the brown connectors. I found one bad one (out of 20 or more) but it was dead on arrival - it did not go bad after a week's worth of usage.
The reason I mention this is that I did have one that seemed to go bad after a week, but upon inspection what I found was that the cable attached to the laser had come loose. Earlier 60GB and 20GB drives had a little piece of cloth tape to keep the cable in place (from the factory) , but the 40gb and 80gb drives no longer have that. If they were installing them from the factory on the stronger white connectors, I think it's mandatory to do the same on the brown connectors where the latches are thinner.
Remember to use something that won't get brittle or fall off when exposed to heat for extended periods.

cant be bothered to read this thread but htought id share some info. I bought my PS3 on launch day and the drive died 4 months later. I took it back and got it swapped. Anyway 14 months later the drive in my new one died aswell! this was 14 months after I swapped it so was out of warrenty. I rang Sony and told them the story, the guy said dont worry sir well fix it as if it was still in warrenty. They sent a coriour to pick it up and a week later have just informed me its coming back to me Thursday. So no probs at all. Even tho im pissed ive had 2 faulty drives Sonys customer service was A+ so it kind of makes it kind of ok. Im just glad to have it back working :)

Thanks for sharing that with us.
I do wonder if this repeated BR failure is b/c of the faulty controller chip?
I spoke to one tech. guy who said he wouldn't guarantee the drive unless the controller chip was replaced.

My 60G was acting up on me, when i would watch Blu-ray movies it started to freeze not load the disks and not eject. So i decided to run the diagnostics and do a file restore of rebuild. I watched 2 movies now with no problems. Hold Power button down for three beeps (while PS3 is off): Enter PS3 diagnostic mode (repeat procedure twice).Any one else try it? here is a link with alot of other info for the PS3. http://www.edepot.com/playstation3.html

Help!! I've had the same problem as most on here. My drive just stopped reading any discs whatsoever. It appeared the discs were not spinning at all but the loading bubble was appearing on the screen.
Out of warranty so I replaced the kem-400AAA and now have a new problem. I tried a dvd and it froze the system. I then tried a ps3 game and it read the disc and loaded. However right after the "playstation 3" startup screen the drive makes a screeching noise and stops spinning and the system freezes.
Any ideas? I'm about to give up and send it in to sony.

Sony might have fixed it for free even if it was out of warrenty because its a common problem i think openin it up blows ur chances tho

Try putting the original hardware back in and seeing if the original problem is still there. It is possible that you have a defective new componet. happened to me twice.

Hi guys, maybe you can help me out
My PS3 has a dead blu-ray drive, the usual symptoms: after insert the disk, the loading bubble appears but not the disk icon, so i can't play or watch any disk i insert.
I bought a KEM-400AAA replacement from Hyratech and installed it last night (the whole thing, laser and frame with the steppers) and it all went flawless, i put it all back together and tried it and it worked, no strange sounds, fast loading times, everything was ok.
Today, i was watching a BD movie and the image froze AGAIN, and the old symptoms are back.
I can send the part back to Hyratech but, since i'm NOT in the states, it would cost me about $40 just to send it to New York and another $15 to send it back to my country (i now, the price difference does not make any sense).
So I don't really know what to do, some things to notice are:
1.- My first lense got busted while watching the first BD movie I ever played on it.
2.- My second lense got busted while watching another BD movie (I got two movies for christmas)
3.- The first busted drive did not make any sound at all when i inserted any disk, the one i have now makes the sound as if it is trying to read.
4.- I have my PS3 connected to a Tripplite UPS, so i don't think it's either a power or ventilation issue.
My questions:
1.- Do you think there may be something else wrong with my PS3 to be busting my lenses?
2.- How can i test both the drives I have? Because of the sound, i think that maybe my original unit has a busted stepper and the new one as a busted laser, but I'm not sure how to test it without compromising the warranty on the new one in case i decide to just send it back.
Anyone?

FWIW, I tried this trick on my 80GB model but it didn't work (I never got the 3rd beep)Someone else posted on that forum and said the trick didn't work after upgrading to firmware 2.53. bummer. Thanks for the site though, I've seen most of the info before but at least here it's in one place.

This works fine on my 80gb PS3 you just need to do it twice before it enters the mode. I have 2.60 currently loaded.
