Hi all. There is a very simple solution and its hassle free! Ring Sony! Mine has the exact same problems and quite frankly im not going to waste money or time in trying to repair it myself based on what seems like a 50/50 chance of fixing it.That is Sony's job! Mine is out of warranty but Sony will give me a refurb free of charge and as long as it works and looks has good as mine then who cares. The reason sony don't think this is a widescale problem is cos u are all trying to fix them yourselves!

As far as I know, the warranty last for a year, but I've read some guys have had free repairs even a few weeks beyond that time.

As for me, I'm on my own because I'm not in the U.S. The girl from Sony told me when I called to ship the PS3 over to my relatives in the US, but for the price I would have to pay in order to do that I might just buy a new one... so I'm still looking for a spare laser...

Out of warranty so I replaced the kem-400AAA and now have a new problem. I tried a dvd and it froze the system. I then tried a ps3 game and it read the disc and loaded. However right after the "playstation 3" startup screen the drive makes a screeching noise and stops spinning and the system freezes.

Any ideas? I'm about to give up and send it in to sony.
Try putting the original hardware back in and seeing if the original problem is still there. It is possible that you have a defective new componet. happened to me twice.
I took the laser off the original and reinstalled it back into the unit. Went right back to having the same problem. At least this indicates that the problem is the laser and not the motor. If anyone else is having this problem you might be able to save some money by just getting the laser, though it is a harder install.

I think the problem is the connector port on the laser. The new laser I got has a slightly different looking connector on it. The cable fits in fine, but perhaps the ribbon cable is coming loose or misaligned somehow? Not sure if there's anything else I can do unless I somehow find an older working laser with the original connector. Replacing the diodes or anything on the busted laser seems beyond my ability (novice).

sry this is kind of off topic and I also posted this in another thread. but this thread has been very helpful so far so I was hoping someone on here would know the answer...

i'm having a video issue with my ps3. It powers on and everything but no video shows up, but i know my tv detects that there is some sort of connection (the av or hdmi will not show up at all if nothing is connected and turned on to those ports) I have tried hooking it up through the regular av slot and the hdmi slot and still a black screen. (all cables are good, tried them on another ps3, and all ports on the tv are good) did not try hooking up with component cables as I have none, but i don't think that they will make a difference.

I also tried the holding down the power button till it beeps thing to reset the video, but that doesn't seem to be working even tho i'm pretty sure i'm doing everything right. Is there anyway to COMPLETELY reset the system without being able to view the screen, or can anybody think of what specifically could be wrong? Haven't taken apart the ps3 yet, but everything appears to be clean, no excess dust that I can see.

If I can fix this, i can only pray the drive is still good... no way to tell just yet, although from the sounds coming from the ps3 i THINK it is playing discs, i'm not sure, all I can tell is that it spins them.

thanks everyone in advance... :)

first time posting here, i am reading everyones problems and we all seem to have very similar ones. It seems that we are all trying everything we can to fix these damm things...

I started out with the same problem updated and then shortly after frozen screen and then nothing would read drive will not spin... I have an older 80g production date nov 07. i just bought a new version 80g with the intent of swapping drives because i would much rather use the older one because of features.... So i tried swapping drives outright but it did not work so i then tried pulling laser diode ass. and swapping and still does not work... very frustrating to say the least...I put the new drive back together and reassembled the unit but now the drive does not work, will not spin. it will recieve and eject dvd fine but will not spin or light up......does anyone have any ideas for me I am going crazy here....tried doing without asking but Im losing my mind.......

As you probably read it could be the controller.

Are you sure the drive you swaped in was the same as the old one?

Did you make sure you used the controller board from the old one with the new one? ie just change the laser assembly not the whole assembly?

well being that the drives are nothing alike i could not change the controller board the cables do not match up. I tried swapping the drives before i knew that the board had to be changed too. so that is why i tried just the laser ass. but now my problem is after putting the new one back together in the new machine i cant get it to work. pulls disc in and ejects no problem but will not spin or light up. trying to figure out what i might have missed or screwed up

I am having the same problem (just with blu-ray movies). Games play fine, but blu-ray movies will hang up/freeze after about 5 minutes. Regular DVD's play fine as well. I pulled the PS3 apart and cleaned the lens, no improvement, exactly the same as before. I wouls like to try this diagnostic mode, but would like more details about this "restore and rebuild". Can you provide more detail about what you did?

I don't think my laser is bad, because Blu-ray games have given me exactly ZERO issues, even games like uncharted that play directly from the disc.

It seems much more software/firmware related, and this might be the answer to my problems. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!!

I cant find the video but hete is the way to do it.
How to get access to service mode

1.Make sure the PS3 is turned off, (Standby)
2.Press and hold the power button on the PS3 it will power on then power off.
3.When it's off press and hold the power button again until you hear two consecutive beeps.
4.It will ask for the controller to be connected via the USB cable,
5.Turn on the controller and you will have access to the menu.

After that pick one of the options

1.Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
2.Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
3.Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
4.Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
5.Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
6.System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

Try #3 if that dint work try #4.
Hope that helps.

What?s the difference between the 3 pin and the 4 pin diode? I am looking to replace some diodes on the 1 laser units and I do not know which one to order. Does anyone know which diode the PS3 takes on the single laser units? Thanks for your help

I was thinking about trying the same thing but from what I understand it's really hard to get everything aligned. You could burn through a lot of diodes before you get one laser working. Just look at the number of returns people need to make when purchasing ones that should be working. I think the pin out depends on the laser you have in the PS3. I thought the 400A used a 5 pin diode but I would look at what you have then order the same one.

Where can you buy these diodes anyway?

That was my next question. Psxboy out of China has the 3 and 4 pin diodes but they are for the KES-410. I have never found one for the KES-400 and it looks like a 5 pin.

thanks for the reply, but i tried this and it didn't fix my problem. I tried to rebuild database but it said cannot access hard disk. (hard drive is not faulty, i tested it on another ps3) I have also tried to do a system update via usb drive and it gave me an error and wouldn't get past 3% giving me an error that even sony claimed wasn't in their database. All the other options on the menu turn the screen black and then the system shuts off (power light turns to red) a few moments after that.

I am at a loss, I believe this has to be firmware related, I have no idea what else it could be. If only there was a way to completely wipe all firmware and start over. I know there has to be several chips that store all the firmware and data because upon swaping hard drives the firmware on the system does not change. If someone figures out a way to completely reset the firmware from the beginning, i think it could help with all of these controller board issues as well..

or is there anything else that could be causing this problem besides firmware, or the system software being damaged?

So about a week back I got a disk read error on my ps3 but it still played Dvds and cds. Now I when I turn it on and put a ps3 disk in, I dont hear the disk spin at all. I took it apart and it was a 400AAA. So if I replace it will the problem be fixed or is it something else?

someone smarter than I should be better able to comment on this but you will notice on the top part of the bd there are channels and then on the bottom part where the laser is you see the white gears and little posts that stick up, they should fit into the gears above

However, it should just clip onto the top, I make sure I assemble the drive without the magnet and that the top is freely flowing.

Also on the lower section left there is a grear and I make sure it isnt engaged on the gear.

you may also want to hook up the drive power it up without the top on and press eject

It looks like I'm the only one replying here so I will continue to do my best

Try turning on unit without the top on it
This should rest the bottom motor
Then reasemble
There is a small black/red wire conector at the side thAt is the optical sensor for br
This optical sensor. Will pull the disk in when the disk barely enters the slot
If it has a broken wire or not hooked up the drive can still pill disks but you have to manually push it I. Further to get it to catch

Also download the utube.Videos for disasemmbly of be laser repair and u might get a better view
Are you sure the motors are working
Do they try to feed and just isn't working or does nothi g happen

Hello All,

First time poster here. I have an issue with a ps3 i'm repairing for a mate and hoping everyone could help out. The problem is when you turn on the ps3 and try to insert a disk it won't make any noise and won't take the disk from you. The blue light lit up but nada. I then tried the force eject technique and to my surprise it worked. So there is power and the mechanisms aren't jammed so i decided to browse around inside the drive. After staring directly at the cause for a little while i then realised that the laser doesn't make the back and forth motion on the worm gear before it takes the disk. So i manually set off the sensor (BTW this is a 410 assembly) and then pressed the micro switch on the laser and it set off the intake motor. So i narrow it down to the worm gear motor. At first i thought it wasn't working but as soon as i pressed back the plastic spring tensioned runner thinggy and set off the sensor i realsied the worm gear motor still spins but as soon as pressure is applied it stops. I ordered another laser assembly without the lens and replaced it over the weekend but am still having the same issue.

So this is where i am at and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Anyone had this problem before? Should i replace the drive controller board or the little plastic pressure thinggy or something completely different? Is this small motor a stepper or dual drive dc motor?

Sorry for such a long post but maybe this could help others out since it seems to be a different problem to any i found online. Anyway, any help is greatly appreciated.

I am having the exact same problem. My problem started after Bad Company froze....I restarted the system, never to read a BluRay again! Sony refuses to do anything since it is a whopping 3 months out of warranty! Outrageous!

Please email me at *removed* if you want to approach Sony together with our same issue. It is time that they own up to selling us faulty equipment, thank you.
