sniping for me on harcore is normally a 1 hit kill.
but snipers on attack on rush is an utter fail. all they do is waste tickets by being killed, not helping to plant, or defend a bomb that has been planted.

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone may know why my frame rates in F.E.A.R. may be low. I constantly average around 53FPS at max settings in the built-in game benchmark with V-sync turned off. Unless I'm mistaken, shouldn't that number be in the 100s?

I find it much more fun to beat them at their own game (although knifing them in the back is also incredibly fun). Imagine: 1st shot goes by, you start looking for them. 2nd shot, still looking. 3rd shot....oh there they are, standing/crouching (my favorite part) in front of some cover. Then you calmly put one round (the first) through their head, and if you're lucky there will be a noob friend sniping next to them :D

The only time I get 1 hit kills is with headshots, although I can't be 100% sure that the M95 at close range still takes 2 body shots on hardcore. I just play what ever server doesn't lag so I'm never paying attention to if it's hardcore or not.
For rush it's always nice to have a few counter snipers but that's all you really need.

Red, I have only played the basic BF2, but on THAT game you can mark spots on the map for the commander to launch an artillery attack against. Don't ask me how they do it, I don't know. But I guess Jeff knows.
All I know is that I have been happily killing off the enemy by sneaking in behind them, many times, only to become the surprised and soon very dead target of a deadly artillery barrage. So maybe THAT is what Jeff is talking about.
If so, one day I'll have to get some pointers from him on how to mark spots for artillery, as well as a million other things I'm gonna need to know about Bad Company.
By the way, I like how you take out those noob snipers - "Oh, there they are" then stand IN FRONT of cover, and shoot them through the head. LOL Who do you think you are? Dirty Harry?
Yeah, Sam, those people who say that HD doesn't make any difference - do they have any eyesight? With glasses, or without glasses, when you can't tell the difference - well, the world must be a dull haze. If that's the case, I'm gonna send my brother to the optometrist.
By the way, Jeff, I do have the Media Player Classic - HC. I didn't know about all those codecs - I think I'll check them out. And additionally, I have gotten the HD264 files working with the DivX Plus player - through a Fix-It program I downloaded from their site.
But here's something that may interest you. I don't know if you guys know the Earth DVD I mentioned in my last post. It's a beautiful DVD - maybe you can dl it somewhere.
Anyway, I started using it as a player test. At 58 minutes into the two hour presentation, it shows some baboons crossing a flooded plain. I like that scene because there are many closeups as they go across on two legs, waving their little paws around for balance.
The media player that manages the usb input on the TV has the worst clarity. Just plain old DVD quality. Before I would have said "Nice" but now I am completely spoiled. The Media Player Classic - HC has nice fidelity - much nicer than the built-in media player. Similarly, MPstar and VLC are nice - there is obviously some up-scaling going on.
But - it's very subtle - the BEST is the DivX Plus player. One of my brother's friends, who has proven to have a very discerning eye, stopped by a couple days ago when I was watching Earth on the DivX player, and he said ""Wow, is that HD?"
I don't know how they are doing it - maybe a lot of AA built into the codec - but they get VERY CLOSE TO HD QUALITY out of a plain old NON-HD 720x480 avi dvd rip. I load the video into the other players, which are pretty nice, and then finally, with the DivX Plus Player you can see a slightly finer level of detail on the baboon facial hair - and a more pleasing picture overall imo.
And as regards the sound - the idea of buying a sound card is interesting - maybe that's the best idea yet. But the DFX Audio Enhancer (I still don't know what they are going to want to charge for that - oh it's $10 - not bad - I'm gonna do it :P) REALLY does a nice job with the two speakers.
Whether it muffles the sound or not - in other words - am I losing clarity I guess you are suggesting? Well, I don't think so. I have not been able to perceive that negative effect. I first tested it out in the jungle with the birds singing - and the chirping seemed just as brilliant and crisp as without the effect.
When you right-click on the video, and hit the DFX Audio Enhancer, a little adjustment window opens with 5 sliders, and you can leave it sitting there while the movie plays even if you are playing full screen.
One button turns the effect on or off - there is a one-second delay when you turn it on for the sound-scape to change.
When you turn it on - the audio gets louder right away - that's one of the stated benefits that I read just now. Maybe by boosting the audio they get more control over it - I'm not sure. Anyway, then when I turn it off, I have to increase the volume for a fair test.
The effect, at same volume, seems to be that it applies some sort of DSP that REALLY does enhance surround sound. Also, I for one like what the hyperbase boost does to the voice of the announcer - like he's on stage in a big auditorium narrating the video. As I said, the chirping of the birds seems completely clear, with full fidelity, but coming from all sides instead of just from the front middle where the TV is.
Ultimately, I'll probably spring for at least $200 on a 5.1 set - not anything too expensive. The $200 Phillips that I got for LA is really nice in my opinion, and it came with a DVD player that promptly broke, lol, but that didn't matter cause I had bought a blu-ray. It accepted only digital coax in, but I found a $15 powered little in-line converter on the internet to work with the digital optical sound coming out of the Samsung 1080p 24" TV/monitor.
And the Phillips also came with a nice digital radio tuner. We don't have cable TV up there, but the powered radio shack amp brings in gorgeous dolby 5.1 sound on the FM radio channels, plus HD video and 5.1 dolby on the HD TV stations.
So, anyway, for $10, the DFX will tide me over until I get the 5.1 sound system.
(On second thought, maybe the on-board Realtek 7.1, which puts out digital audio on the HDMI cable from the ati 3650 to the Toshiba - offers some audio enhancements. I didn't see anything but I'll go through the HP manual and see what I can find.) Yeah - they have some environments - I'll have to check it out - maybe I can save ten bucks, haha. By the way, speaking of DSP, has anybody turned on that Axe Hair commercial at the top of this forum page - that's what I'm talking about!!!! LOL

oh no, I vary rarely leave cover, it's the noobs that stand in front of something they should be behind (especially recons). Exposing yourself is practically asking for some one to kill you.
In Bad Company 2 calling an artillery strike is a perk the recon class gets so I'd disappointed to hear that every one else get's it too.

@Rich, artillery strikes in BC2 can only be called in by a sniper AFAIK.
Bad Company is much more squad-based and group tactics play a larger role. In oldschool BF2 the scale is much larger, thus the need for a commander and skilled squad leaders or the size of the map makes everything confusing.
The beauty of BC2 is that it doesn't need a dedicated command structure to be fun. ie you don't need intelligent people playing the top spots to do cool squad-based stuff. That was one of the shortfalls of BF2 because if you haven't noticed about 50% of online players are either lone-wolf snipers or lone-wolf noobs. Especially so when you have noob snipers as squad mates because then they don't even provide a good spawn point ie they sit about a mile away from the action.

I'm looking at these 2 cards right now.

But my board is only PCI-e 2.0, not 2.1 like one of the cards is. Unless I'm mistaken, the 2.1 card could be some kind of new revision by XFX, which could mean better build, less chances of GSOD, BSOD, etc. Any thoughts on 2.0 and 2.1 backwards compatibility? XFX seems to be the only card (That I've seen) offering a lifetime warranty. Heck, they're offering a double lifetime LOL!
Oh I see, they're only offering double lifetime on the 2.0 card...
HO ho! I didn't realize PCI-e 3.0 was in the works. I suppose I should have though :p

GSODs were a combined hardware and software issue. They've pretty much disappeared now that supplies are good, and drivers have matured.

I think I want the XFX 5970
Laugh all you like, but I like being set for a long time :p And XFX seems to be the only manufacturer bold enough, to offer a lifetime warranty :D

Likewise my 5850s have been essentially problem-free and didn't come with the OC'd BIOS on the stock cards like some did. Checked them both individually and they both have the right clocks and will FurMark for hours and hours artifact-free. I think I just barely dodged the bullet when I got mine.

Hey jeff, your 2407WFP dell monitor is S-IPS isn't it? I could be happy with it, and my samsung monitor for a while. I've decided dropping 1200+ on a monitor isn't practical right now. I tried tempting myself, but I'm cheap LOL! I'm more tempted to shellout ~700 on an XFX 5970 ;) The idea of playing games with at least double frame rates (compared to now), sounds really appealing.

The HD5970 would be more like triple the frame rates in most situations :P
It'd be a little held back by the Phenom CPU on a few occasions though.
2407FPWs I believe were S-PVA, but still far better than TN.

At below 2560 resolution, a card like the HD5970 is going to be CPU-limited relatively often. My Q9550 held my pair of X2s back compared to my i5, so that should say enough.

depends on the game no? plus yeah it might be a little held back but hell gain much more from going ot a 5970 which will lat a long time aswell rather than getting a better CPU and omega, if your current CPU will hold it back, so will the 6 core. games just cant take advantage. thats not to say it wont though

hi im thinking of adding a second 5870 some time within the next few months, and just wanted some advice on power consumption and if i will have to upgrade my psu.
i also wanted to know what the best 5870 i could get , as there are the new 2 gb versions like the sapphire toxic one and the new asus matrix and some 1gb versions the asus v2 and the gigabyte superclocked

Sam is correct mine is S-PVA. One of the best quality displays I have ever used. Have a few friends running 1920 as well but on TN panels AFAIK. Of course TN has vastly improved in recent years(as has been the case with my actually decent Acer 22") but still doesn't touch S-PVA.

One of my buddies just got the 1090T with a CoolIt Eco 120. Runs cool and a surprising amount of games will use it. BFBC2 in particular took a decent jump in performance with his twin 5870s... Coming from a 940 @ 3.4 to a 6 core at 3.8 as well but task manager performance tab shows all 6 being used in BC2 and maybe a 20% jump in FPS.

Ah well, they're being used but how much are they being used? Games can sometimes use multiple cores, but to such an extent that they're effectively using the same number as before (for example, 100% on two cores versus 50% on four). Bad Company 2 is, to be fair, one of very few games that multithreads well, but given that the 1090 at 3.8 vs the 940 at 3.4 is a good 15% or so performance benefit by itself, 20% extra frames isn't saying much. Personally, I would always say go with a Quad core at most for a gaming system right now unless you give something other than gaming first priority.

Encoding is definitely 1st priority xD
If I here of a GOOD X264 encoder, that can utilize 6 cores, I'll jump on the 1090t.
I wonder if S-PVA is technology that was used on my brothers last HDTV. It was too cheap a display to be S-IPS. And the picture was rather stunning :D It was a Dynex 40".
Its quite unfortunate that retailers are not required to explain their products further. People like myself want to know what they're buying. Not even Dynex's website tells what technology their LCD panel is. Is it S-PVA, S-IPS...I may never know :(

Mind you he's at 1920 as well and it does hit a video limit at spots too. Apparently it worked wonders for his minimums. I don't think it goes below 60 for him at the same settings as me. 1920 x 1200 Dx10 Maxed 4xAA.
I think he mostly did it for the lulz though. 4GHz 1090T, 2 x 4GB DDR2-1066, MA-790FX-UD4P. Nice system actually.

I think most TVs are TN, but some models use S-PVA and IPS types.
