so a sensor test should look like this then right? not any variance in the cores?
yes thats at idle..lol and i set teh TJ Max as the same as everest and such.lol i hate my temps.

Those are the tests. I have stuck sensor on my E8400 which can vary by as much as 10C. I just take the reading from the hotter of the two cores.

It's just a recent measure of your recent temperature range. Capture programs use a lot of processor resources so that alone can cause temps to raise.

Fair enough, I was torrenting at the time so I suppose that would have something to do with it. In the example you've shown, is that 7C difference between the sensors indicative of a stuck sensor?

Yes, the difference under load can be as much as 10C and on idle around 6C. If you notice the sensor test shows a 4C difference but that is also measured from idle. If I heat things up a bit the difference would usually be about 5 to 6C.

while we're comparing notes, here's what I get:
as soon as asus comes out with a new bios, I'm taking her up to 3.6ghz. I have plenty of headroom temp wise. there's a bug with my current bios (0403) and if LLC is enabled it will cause the pc to randomly reboot at idle for no reason a couple times a day (this is very common with everybody using 0403 bios). with LLC disabled or on auto, there is no problem whatsoever. there is a beta bios available (0406) I might try. I was playing in the bios earlier today and was able to get the performance level down to 6. it was at 10 on auto (lower is beter).

why is real temp showing your clock speed so low, even under stock?

As nice as that board is, one does wonder why Asus didn't implement that feature properly from the word go. It's a classic case of fixing the bugs after the product's gone on sale.

it's just with this particular bios (0403). it was fine with the original bios (0219) and all other prior bios's and is supposedly fixed in bios (0406).

C1E and EIST are on, no point in running it all out if I'm not using it. This way I can turn all my fans down and run things quieter but I can raise them for encoding. My actual overclock is above 3.8.

it was the latest official bios (and still is) at the time I changed out my E3110 for my Q9450. I justed wanted to have the latest and greatest. bugs are fairly rare with new bios's. they're usually beneficial. this one just slipped through the cracks. like I said there is no problem whatsoever with LLC disabled or on auto.

Fair enough. Can't say much about BIOSes as Gigabyte's system doesn't really work properly, that's my one biggest criticism of the company as a whole. Fortunately my board works off the bat with the F1 BIOS, else every time my PC crashed (which isn't often, but would be if I was testing out a new overclock) I'd have to reflash the BIOS, as every time the system resets the BIOS settings, it also reverts back to F1.
Then again I suppose that's a good safety feature if you get a dodgy BIOS version or a failed flash.

Some of the bios' and boards out there predate 45NM processors and the manufacturers have to work out the bugs.

very good point. the problem I have with LLC enabled only effects those using a 45nm cpu.

hence my problem with my board and my 45nm E8400.... they have a F12 bios beta, but they also have been working on it for a year now...

abuzar1.. Did U install the full blown Vista, or the mini Vista. The mini Vista is a stripped Down ver less then 700mbs, everywhere I go on the Net,its been getting great revues, less mem resources,faster, more reliable. I know 700mbs is a lot smaller then its predecessor, what is it normally ? 1.5gig ? Sure hope U keep us posted on your new Vista, I'm like U, my next build I'm going byte the bullet and install the mini Vista. Mainly to start getting used too it, eventually thats what going to be. We're all going to have to get over XP EVENTUALLY. To be perfectly honest I never really cared for XP, but it became a
necessity !

He's still waiting for a mounting screw to install the heat sink properly. I've never used the Tuniq but I hear that it's pretty good. It does however sound like he needs a new fan and he should probably order it before Sam hears about this. It would kill him!!

Still, it is a shame to see a cooler of that caliber underperform as usually they seem excellent.
