Russ, I don't need to run it at full speed, I just dont feel like installing the fan controller at the moment. When I get the new screws and re-install everything I will install the fan controller as well. I actually have a high tolerance for noise so I wont have to turn it down so much. In fact even at full speed I could live with it if I had to. I wouldn't actually change the fan even if I COULDNT turn it down, and I can haha.
Hell, the core temps at regular usage dont get over 45C with NO FAN AT ALL. It's a pretty good cooler, it's just not installed correctly. I have full faith that it will be quite excellent once everything is setup properly :)

Just goes to show how good your case ventilation is. Whilst I have no problems running my CPU fan at 600rpm, remove it completely and with case fans at the low speed I use, core temps at idle are in the sixties.

lol
And I had disabled ALL my fans except for my front fan(That logysis red fan that you said would be awfully loud... it wasn't. lol) and the stock cooler master fan in the read.
When everything is working I have that front and back fans. THe front is intake and rear is exhaust. I also have a top fan intake that blows cool air right in front of the Tuniq tower so it gets fresh air. I also have an exhaust on the side panel to take away the heat from the 4850(which IDLES at 75C!!!!) because it's a single slot.

75C is lower than most sites report, it's typically 81-82C. It's because the 4850 unlike previous cards doesn't throttle down at idle, it carries on running at full pelt, using as much power as an 8600 at full tilt, hence why it gets so hot.
As for the noise, noise is relative. In the eyes of most the stock fan on the HD3870 is quiet, but it bugged me.
Also, don't forget my CPU is reasonably overvolted. If you're still running stock, your heat output may not be as high.

Sophocles,
Quote: He's still waiting for a mounting screw to install the heat sink properly. I've never used the Tuniq but I hear that it's pretty good. It does however sound like he needs a new fan and he should probably order it before Sam hears about this. It would kill him!!
If he can't cool it better than that with an FM-121, either the cooler isn't mounted correctly or the cooler is bad! The Silverstone FM-121 is one of the highest cfm fans available. He should have no problems running between 700 and 1000 rpm cooling it!

Hmm! I must be missing something, I thought that he was complaining about the noise?
He does need another screw to seat his heat sink properly. In my view he should go to the Hardware store and replace the entire lot. He says that the system works passively which would suggest that fan speed or high CFM isn't necessarily what's needed.
Look at the noise level (close your ears and shut your eyes sam) of the silverstone "17-39.5 dBA, and then the noise of other fans,"9 dBA, and 12.8 dBA." Propellers should only be used on planes, and boats. You know how they sound?

Haha, well it's bolt through. I haven't seen any complaints about screwing a cooler in. I hear this is the best method.
It's not push pin or anything like that.

I need a better cooler than that xigmatek, which did not work out well at all. What should I get? I was thinking TRUE or:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835108105
which I hear is very easy to install for a water cooler...
how were you applying the TIM for the xigmatek (i presume thats the heatpipe touching the IHS one)?

ABUZAR: I'm waiting for a response to see if I can get it replaced by xigmatek, and then sell it...Even if they don't replace, I'll still sell it. You want it? If they don't replace it, it'll come with a missing vibration bracket thing that holds the fan up, because one of them ripped....
shafaaf: I put a SMALL amount on the heat pipes, and then spread it with a plastic card...came out with a nice thin layer....
What should I replace the cooler with?

Sophocles,
Quote: Hmm! I must be missing something, I thought that he was complaining about the noise?
It was! I was merely pointing out that the FM-121 should be capable of very quietly cooling the CPU Cooler at much lower rpms!
Quote: Look at the noise level (close your ears and shut your eyes sam) of the silverstone "17-39.5 dBA, and then the noise of other fans,"9 dBA, and 12.8 dBA." Propellers should only be used on planes, and boats. You know how they sound?
Anything below about 25Dba is a moot point as it's well below the normal normal ambient threshold. I'm not saying you won't hear it at all in say, a very quiet room, but normally the ambient sound is much louder in normal circumstances than the fan! A quiet Library is about 35Dba or so! Outside the house around 60Dba depending on where you live!
I have an FM-121 120mm as my rear case fan, and an FN-83 80mm for my side cover, both as exhausts that pump about 100cfm out the back and side of the case, that are both adjusted to 1300 rpm! No where's near the noise level they have at maximum speed! While not silent, customers almost always remark about how quiet it is!
Best Regards,
Russ

that is a cooler for the NB chipset in the event that there is interference with the oem heatsink.
if you do decide to go with the TR IFX-14, take some measurements to verify it will clear everything.
if I was building now, the IFX-14 is most likely what I would go with. the TR U120E, like what I am using now is as always a very solid choice too. I bought mine prelapped.
