Good guide, the media list is obviously not the full list (might blow the original post out to be many pages long hehe).

I've been thinking of composing a more up to date, accurate list. I personally have only burned 300+ DVD's. However, I know several people who have several thousand burns under their belt, and have learned alot from them. I haven't the time right now, but maybe soon. It's certainly something that's needed, I'm tired of the digitalfaq guide. It's definitely in need of an update.

Hi
I've just tried to burn an ISO of dragon quest viii. The game works fine and is less than 4G so doesn't need a rebuild. The problem I'm having is that although the game works it takes about 1-2 minutes to load when you enter a building or move to a new section etc.. I'm using the same media I always have previoulsy with no problems. Does anybody know what causes and how I might fix the slow loading times.
Thanks

Your media. Lol.
Even though some media brands work with other games, media may not work on others. It could be your laser, but it's most likely your media. Get some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

i have a problem.
i have the earliest ps2 (the first version at the day ps2 launched)
i had the lazer renewed 2 days ago.Ps2 is modded. So i have a game backup dvd that works (on a second class media) but have slow loading times. using DVD Decrypter i've made an iso of the game (from the backup) and again using the DVD Decrypter i had it burned to a 1st class media. But it doesnt work. it doesnt read at all and i am stuck at the browser screen. what might be the problem? please help. i downloaded the clonedvd2 but it seems it only works for movie dvds.?
Can i directly copy the dvd using Nero?
also, for another game i tried to rebuild according to guide but when it comes to apache2 to create the iso it never stops. the iso file keep growing to 5GB and up. (cpu process becomes %100) so i cannot rebuild a game.

You will have to get it from an original source, or just grt it from 1st class media. As for apache2, try using IMl to ISO.

Try one of the other two methods of rebuilding. Check out the PS2 FAQ in my sig. What "1st class" media are you using, and what speed?

first class media i was talking about was MCC, MKM = Mitsubishi Chemicals. it didn't work on my machine (schp 30004+mesiah2 mod chip+new lazer)
today i bought some TDK DVD-R and it seems ok for now.
by the way i should mention i went to a friend who has a new slim ps2 with a new mod chip , and all the MCC media that doesnt work on my machine works perfect on his machine.
its funny but i guess my machine likes bad media :)
ps:ps2 faq is great thanks man! nice work!

My hunch is those are probably 16z Verbs. 16x media provides very mixed results for the PS2.

I'd still recommend getting some 4x or 8x Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's, those TDK's are a quick fix, and if they're made in Taiwan, they could code out as CMC Mag. :(

I have a question about medias since those ones weren't directly refered in the guide(wich is very good) at the beggining.
1. Are Sony's[Japan] DVD+R 8x 1st class too? I mean that only -R were listed... And the Sony DVD-R they have near my house are taiwan
2. Are Maxell's[Japan] DVD-R 16x as good as 8x? At the place I go, Maxell DVD-R 8x are made in Taiwan XD.
BTW: If someone one has a good website that sells Taiyo Yuden in Canada that can actually ships in Quebec ,please tell me thx

It depends where those Sony's are made. If the 50 spindles are made in Japan, and the spacer (piece of styrofoam)on top is octogonal, then they're Taiyo Yudens. Stick with 4x or 8x Taiyo Yuden or Verbatims, 16x media provides very mixed results with the PS2. Those Maxells are not worth the purchase, they can code out anywhere from Ritek to CMC Mag, not worth the risk. I don't know specifically who ships to Quebec, but here's a list of reputable DVD media vendors:
86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:

Those should work fine. My first 150 backups or so were on the shiny TYG02's, never had a Coaster with TY's in either format. Those prices are good assuming they're in Canadian dollars. As long as that site is reputable, I don't forsee any problems. The manufacturing number doesn't mean anything, you need to know the Media ID of the Sony discs to confirm they're TY's. You can also use the small numbers on the the inside ring of the discs, adjacent to the hole. The first two letters will be GGxxxxx on TYG02, and TGxxxxx on Yuden000T02.

ok so if it's GGxxxxxxxxx or TGxxxxxxxxx it's Yuden?
The 25 spindles is 19.99 and the 50 spindles is 36.99 I might go to the costco and buy a 100 spindles for 17.99 lol

That's the rings on the inner circle of the disc. You can't really see that from the package, use the spacer to determine if they're TY's. If those 100 spindles are garbage media, you'll regret it later.

the costco bundles are Sony's and Verbatim. I'll check them next I go but I think they only have 16x. Are Verbatim's 4x good too?
EDIT: I found a good sellers for TYs. Is it normal that the writtable surface is purple? I mean, I only used memorex so far for DVD-Video(works well with my JVC player and really sucks with panasonic, even with the $250 panasonic HD model I tried it at the futureshop) They were purple and are all DVD-R purple?
Are TYG03 as good? because they are cheaper(100 for $40)

I have very limited experience with TYG03. The ones I burned worked okay. Most of the 16x issues I've seen have been with TDK or Verb's. I don't recall people having issues with TYG03. If you can get them that cheap, it's probably worthwhile. I can't guarantee they'll work, but they should. You can always use them for movies if they don't work for some reason. That's a good price on TY's and Verbs. All the TY's I've ever used have purple writing surfaces. That goes for Yuden000T02/TYG02/TYG03.

ok I just check and TYGO3 are TY's "Value Line" wich means that they don't meet Yuden's premium A rank standard but they are good too
