Pretty good man. I spend most of my time fiddling with my Xbox, haven't touched the PS2 recently other than to test some PSX backups. Played through a couple NES games on FCE Ultra, stocked up on Genesis, SNES, and NES roms, a couple N64 games, all which run really well on the Xbox, even PCSXbox runs PSX games pretty well, minus some audio skipping here and there. And of course, spend plenty of time watching stuff over XBMC. I update it weekly, though there's not much point. Still use EvoX as your default dash? I use UnleashX, love it. Anyway, take care man.

Yeah I still use EvoX. If UnleashX is as customizable as EvoX, then I might consider it.

It's very customizable. There's a ton of skins for it, a built in file manager, save game manager. You can easily edit the xml file to add stuff to the menu, pretty similar to editing the ini for EvoX. If your Xbox has an active internet connection, you can download updates and skins for UX directly from your Xbox. Also, UX supports the boost mode, which speeds up FTP transfer from your Xbox to your PC considerably, about 50% on my setup. I'd make a backup of my C and E drives before changing the default dash. As I recall, you're using a softmod. I have a Xenium Ice, so it's a little easier for me. Modchips are idiot proof, as I have demonstrated time and time again. Soft mods are fairly stable, just to have to be careful about deleting certain files, could result in an error 21 and your Xbox not booting.

Sounds cool, I'll give it a try. Yeah I'm running on a softmod, I know pretty much all there is to know, and I have backed up my whole Xbox system to my hard drive, just incase. I find FTP a little slow too, so it may be worth my while.

Well there's always more to know when it comes to the Xbox, I'm learning new stuff every day. I know a decent amount, hold back quite abit. I don't know a ton about softmods, as I have a chip. I just know they're not as stable as a hard mod, though with AID and what not, they're not too bad. As I understand it, before the days of SID 4.5 and AID 3.0, softmods were pretty unstable. Anyway, a modded Xbox is awesome, blows the PS2 out of the water.

Sure is, I've noticed my PS2 gathering dust now!
By the way, I know you don't know much about softmods, but by any chance would you know how to switch the modded dashboard to UnleashX instead of EvoX? I have my EvoX let me launch UnleashX, but I'd rather it started up to UnleashX instead. I was thinking, of just launching AID3, going to - Install softmod dashboard>UnleashX. Which will probably work, but just to be on the safe side..?

Well this is straight from Janrocks, who's far more knowledgeable about the Xbox than I. She says not to worry about changing your default dash with a softmod, too much that can go wrong, like your Xbox not booting. It's a little different with a chip, even if you fubar everything you can still boot into your chip's firmware menu, at least with a Xenium Ice. I've tested this theory quite extensively. Anyway, your best bet would be to install UX as an app, and do it that way. Honestly, when I got my Xbox back from Davbere, UX was set as the default dash. Having used Avalaunch, UX, and EvoX, I prefer UX by a long shot, Avalaunch is quite good too, imo. Jan also says UX isn't stable with a softmod. I'd take her at her word, she's forgotten more about the Xbox than most people will ever know.

Sorry to be a pain folks, but my PS2 backups are stuttering, and the loading times are slow :( I trust i'm in the correct topic? ;)
I'm burning using Verbatim DVD+R (4x) and TDK DVD+R (16x) at 2.34x using DVD Decrypter and booktyping them to DVD-ROM. I've closed all unnecessary taskbar items, left the PC unused during burning and have also set the priority of the DVD Decrypter process to high in task manager to ensure a smooth buffer read.
When i test the burns with Nero CD/DVD speed i get a quality rating of 93 generally, though with a high number of PI Errors (2,208,551 Total).
I'm using an LDW 811s burner and Swap Magic 3.6 to play the backups. The originals work fine on the PS2, but i have tried cleaning the laser anyway - this doesn't help with the problem.
I've posted on other threads but then i saw this one and figured i'd be a good soul and put the subject in its proper place. Hope somebody can help as i get really anal about using my originals, lol - my old PS2 likes to scratch them
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

You are better using DVD-R but DVD+R may still work. Tell me, what is the media ID of those verbatim? Open up DVD Decrypter, insert a verbatim disc, and give me the media ID code.
Also, what games have you tried backing up? They may need rebuilt, but this is a simple process. But I'd like to know the media code. And where you bought them.

Thanks for offering to help Mik :)
I'm trying to back up Dragon Quest 8 at the mo, but this is happening with all my backups. Up til now i just asked my housemate to do it for me with his burner, but now he's moved out see...
I've tried using verbatim -R but they perform even worse than the +R and i read in one of the guides that +R are better if your PS2 will eat them.
The media code is MCC 03RG20 - i bought them from my local Maplin's store. Also tried some TDK +Rs too, with the same effect (i think their manufacturer was NYUGEN or something? i heard they were good...)

I have 3 copies of Dragon Quest VIII, two burned to TYG02, one burned to RitekG05, they all play fine. I'm not surprised your PS2 is having issues with 16x media, very mixed bag for PS2 backups. The 4x Verb's should work though. One thought is you're burning games too slow. Try burning at 4x on the 4x or 8x on the 16x media.

Whoa, it's possible to burn games too slow? Man this is tough...
Thanks for the advice, i'll give it a shot :)
[EDIT]just been reading that DVD RW puts a "terrible" strain on the PS2 laser. My DVDs are +R or -R, but i'm worried by a little icon above the "DVD+R" that is RW
see the little RW on the disk?

needless to say it still stutters. could this mean my burner is too slow?

Is your firmware up to date?
92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatibility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

Hi All I bought VERBATIM DVDs via CDr Media website and the ID code is MCC-003-00
Is this ok?
Also I have experienced the same problem with Dragon quest VIII. it was playing and then it stopped all of a sudden. I just had to copy the disc that would not play on a better dvd and it now works
I also have a question regarding back ups for PSX
I use a slim line PS2 with infinity mod chip 1.8.2
but if I burn the bin and cue files of a game on cd (not rw cds but TKD cds) it does not work>
I tried to burn the cd using ISOBURN but it did not work. In which format should I burn a psx back up to let it work?
I can play this game with a pSX emulator from my pc though...

@Wombat Is your burner older? A newer burner with up to date firmware should be able to burn much faster than 2.4x. Have you tried different burning software like Nero, Alcohol 120%, DVD Decrypter, and ImgBurn? There's guides for all of them in my sig.
@ aralerm I have a MI with firmware v1.88, and be it a combination of firmware issues, laser dying on the CD Reading side, my PS2 will simply not read certain PSX backups I have. I believe it could be linked to the MI firmware because someone else on AD has a MI with current firmware and couldn't get Breath of Fire 4 and Lunar the Silver Star to work either. I spent a lot of time, coasters, and testing this on different firmware, media, software, etc, I just cannot get these games to load on my PS2. I can get them to run on PCSXbox, a PSX emu for Xbox. It's very frustrating, I also tried cleaning my laser, adjusting the CD pot on the bottom of the laser, didn't help. I don't have a definitive answer after all that. That leads me to believe it's a combo of crappy iso rips, laser issues, and MI firmware issues. If it was one simple factor, I believe I would've found it. Those MCC003's have worked great for me, I've burned 25-30 and they play great on my PS2 and Xbox, shouldn't have any issues.

thanks tokijin
i think it is a case of an older burner, as i did buy it some 2-3 years ago back when DVD burners were quite a new thing. perhaps this is the root of my troubles...
i guess the old girl needs a rebuild anyway cos i need to make the transition to PCI-E

first thing the guys are going to hammer you for is using second (or third?) class media. take a good look around the stickies and you should find a solution to that problem
and the DVD-RW that the status text is talking about is perhaps worrying - are you trying to booktype or something?
