Hi there. Sorry about that, it mentions on the first page, that I picked this game at random. I didn't actually want to back it up and wasn't aware of the rebuilding issues this game has. I mention this at the ery bottom of my post, saying that I wasn't aware this game wasn't easy to rebuild. Sorry about that!

Rebuilding Metal Gear Solid 2 is very difficult. It requires hex editing, multiple discs and swapping frequently for different portions of the game. It can be done, and there are guides for it.
Hex Editing:
http://my.afterdawn.com/3dluis/blog_entry.cfm/327
110. Q. I want to backup Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance. I have Swap Magic or a modchip that doesn't support DVD-9 backups. Is there any way to backup Metal Gear Solid 2 onto a single disc?
A. Metal Gear Solid 2:Substance is about 6.4GB's. That makes her DVD-9 or Dual Layer. There's no way to shrink it to a single DVD-5 (single layer) disc. However, you can back it up on two DVD-5 discs so that it's playable with Swap Magic or a modchip. Be forewarned this isn't for noobs to attempt. After reading the guide you'll understand why. It involves hex editing, rebuilding, and a lot of different utilities. If you're desperate to play the game and you think you can handle it, then give it a try. Otherwise get a copy off Ebay for cheap.
Guide: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/280523 If you'd rather download it: http://www.freewebs.com/mybackups/MetalGearSolid2Substance.zip

Thanks heaps for a very helpful guide.
I have just adjusted ny laser and have nearly got all discs
working again. The only ones I can't get to work are my new TDK DVD-R
My old TDK's work fine now but I think the new ones could have caused my problems. The old ones are not labelled as TDK and have a white ring in the centre whereas the new ones are marked as TDK and DVD-R in the clear centre I have FIFA 06 on a TDK which failed but is fine on Verbatim.
Thanks again for the guide and I hope you can tell me what has happened to TDK.

Maybe it has changed media code. Or are you using 16x discs? Some PS2 models have difficulty playing these.

Well one for thing, TDK stopped manufacturing their own media with the TTH02 media code several months ago, so likely you've gotten some media they outsourced to CMC Mag or another manufacturer. 8x Taiyo Yuden's or Verbatim's are the way to go, never had a coaster with 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD+R's/-R's. That's all I use for my PS2/Xbox backups.

Yes the TDKs are 16x as were the old ones but I ever burn
at 4x.
Where have all the fish gone?

The 16x media is probably the issue. 16x media is very finnicky with the PS2, best to stick with quality 8x Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media.

Best to stick with 8x media. Supermediastore.com has 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's (TYG02) on sale for $35 with free ground shipping. That's an excellent deal, and those discs will work flawlessly for PS2 backups.
DVD-R-media-100-pack.html" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-...
For some reason (I think because it's html) the http://www.supermediastore.com links always get messed up. Go there, click on DVD-R's-->Taiyo Yuden-->Silver Thermal-->100 pack, and you'll see it.

Hi guys I am a newbie as well. Quick query: i backed up 2 games with garbage cds unpacking them from rar and then creating an nrg file with Nero 6.0 from the ISO file. It works fine on my PS2 with mod chip infinity 1.8.2. Then I used the same procedure with other 2 games Urbz and Super Dragon ball Z...the disc cannot be read.
Did I get it right that if I burn the ISO file or I unpack it and burn it ...it does not work...NRG format should work?
Also strange enough a third game I got was working fine...then it stopped working. The Lens of my psp cannot be that dirty after just 1 month of not intensive gaming...the DVD of this last game (Dragon quest VIII) is not scratched...
Any suggestions thanks.
Last but not least can somebody suggest me links on how to get started using an external hard disk connected to PS2? I have the hard disk already and the PS2 adapter...
Sorry for long post.
Arale Chan
PS I must get some of the DVDs you are suggesting...I hav already burnt 7 dvds for back up that do not work..and I start to feel like a real lamer..

HI I finally sorted out the problem using IMGBURN...it works fine.
I ordered some Taiyo yuiden DVDs and I will stock up when I go to Japan in a couple of months.
I have a silver slim line PAL PS2 with infinity mod chip 1.8.2 bought on a german website all complete with hard disk external (160 GB)
I want to use the PS2 like a kind of media centre...
Thanks for your reply. Although I am 33 I am really getting into this kind of stuff...should have discovered before.
I wonder what I have done all these years...

Me too man. I used to have a lot of bad habits, now I just backup PS2 and Xbox games. Anyway if you have a v.12 or 13 PS2, you're able to load games off a IDE HD with HDConnect or HDCombo. In effect it's a IDE connector soldered to your mobo. It's recommended you get a pro to do it, unless you're an experienced solderer. If you have a v.14 PS2, your only option is to load games off a USB HD, which is a waste, too many compatibility issues. The solder points for HD Combo/Connect have been removed on the v.14. Since you have an MI, you can save HD Advance/Loader to your MC with Infinity Manager or via FTP, and load it with Devolution mode. In combination with a HD, this will completely alleviate the need for discs. As far as using the PS2 Media center, that's a different story. The homebrew available for the PS2 just isn't powerful enough to use it as an effective media center. You can play AVI files off the HD, but I'm not expert with it, and once again the homebrew for PS2 falls woefully short here. If you want an inexpensive media center, a modified Xbox is the way to go. The xbox is comparable to a four or five year PC in terms of power. XBox Media Center streams videos in virtually any format, and is an amazing piece of software, better than a lot of PC media players. The Xbox makes one hell of a media center, and the games aren't bad either. Primarily I use mine as a media center. You can find media players for the PS2 here: http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=media.html
113. Q. I want to play PS2 games off an IDE Hard Drive with a slimline PS2. Is that possible?
A. Yes- if you have a v.12 or 13 PS2. HD Connect is an IDE connector soldered to your slim PS2's motherboard which allows you to connect an IDE HD and play games off the Hard Drive. To do so, you will need a DMS 4 Pro SE modchip. HD Combo is a similar product which also runs off the DMS 4 Pro SE. A premodded DMS 4 Pro SE with HD Combo sells for around $270. Using ToxicOS, you're able to load games off the HD, like you would with a fat PS2. The solder points for HDConnect have been removed on the v.14 PS2. As such, it is not possible currently to play games off an IDE HD with a v.14. You can use USB Extreme/Advance to play games off a USB HD. However, data transfer is slow and there are numerous compatibility problems, generally you're better off playing games from disc.

Not unless the game is giving you problems. Burn it to quality media first, if you have issues, then worry about rebuilding.

Not in my opinion. Made in Japan TDK media is adequate, Made in Taiwan TDK media is a crap shoot, like any big company, and not worth your money. What's the Media ID of the those TDK's?
91. Q. What is the Media ID of a DVD and how can I find it?
A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. You can also use a program called DVD Identifier which is very useful. You can find it here: http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ Compare the Media ID to this link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm Huge List of Media ID's (Thanks to DogBomb): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431

Hi thanks for all the information. I do have a USB hard disk. I will start playing around with this. Also thanks for the info on how to check the ID for DVDs. I am going off to Japan soon so I will buy some DVDs -RW the only format down there, in Akihabara soon.

Try the TDK's first. I don't recommend them for long term use. Do they have the TTH02 media code?

Sup Mike, haven't talked to you in awhile. I wish I could find Verb's locally at a reasonable price, outside of Sam's Club. Does your PS2 like 16x media? That seems to be 50/50, though newer models seem to get on better with it.

Hey Tokijin, how's it going!?
My PS2 along with my Xbox reads 16x perfectly. I burn them at 2x with ImgBurn, and they play nice and sweetly. I have a v1 Xbox and a silver UK PS2 (big). I get them from - Dixons (aka. Curries Digital)
