I haven't even really given oc'ing much effort, and am already seeing dvd rebuilder speeds in excess of 8-12% quicker than deneb 940. Very impressed. I plan on Oc'ing the Shat out of it too :D

Quote: (by sammorris)I don't use EasyTune, as you have to click for every % you want the fan speed raised, you can't scroll or hold the button down, it's a very poorly designed program.
Sam,
It's not near as bad as all that. The older ones were, but you don't have to click anything aside from grabbing the slider to adjust it. I would have preferred the arrow keys for fine adjustment, but it's still pretty easy to use, and much better than earlier versions.
It's 23C in here right now, which is 79-80F, and the CPU is currently going back and forth between 27-28C. The motherboard runs cooler running at only 1100 to 1200 rpms on the CPU fan. The video card runs fine in the second slot, and runs cooler as well, so there's more breathing room for the Northbridge to get air. EasyTune6 does a right fine job controlling the CPU fan. much better than letting the motherboard do it with just PWM smart fan control. Here's the temps.
Even the Northbridge has settled down a bit, to 35-36C. It's even gotten cooler in the last half hour or so, just sitting here idling.
I don't think you could ask for better temps at these room temps, and as hot as it is outside.
Best Regards,
Russ

Interesting, I don't remember seeing that slider in EasyTune before, I could have a look at it, but to be honest the automatic control does a good enough job for me at the moment, and EasyTune only ever used to work for the CPU fan anyway. At idle I get 1050rpm and load around 1400, the full 1600 if heavy load. That's fine as 1050rpm is pretty much inaudible behind idling X2s on an SFF21F, and 1400 isn't enough to make much noise when under reasonable load. 1600 is noticeable, but it only occurs when the graphics fans drown everything else out. Under 25% CPU load (game lobby) CPU temp stabilises at about 43ºC with that core at 40ºC and the others at 30. At 35%, in said game, it's 45-46ºC with that core at 43ºC or so. Idle is currently 31ºC with the cores all at 27. Not bad for a 54% overclock I don't think :D

Sam,
Your's looks pretty good to me. I only resorted to easy tune when I discovered that after a certain point the faster fan speed actually cools less. slowing it down to a max of 1700-1800, and upping the 80mm Silverstone to 1400 to increase the CFM of the exhaust, seems to work real well. I'm impressed with CPU 47C/MB 45C under full load with OCCT 3.1.0 as it really loads everything down. You might give OCCT a try on yours. I know my temps are impressive considering how high they were under full load, when I first built it. The outside temps are still in the low 40s at night and the CPU/MB temps drop a fair bit below daytime performance. The lowest temps so far have been 22-23 for the CPU and 33-34 for the MB. I'd say I have it just about right! LOL!!

And this is your Athlon propus right? I'd like to see you cool a 940 or 965 deneb that has been punched to the wood LOL! or a 955 for that matter ;) I think my 5200 athlon should run cooler. Its a 89W cpu, and runs fairly warm. Perhaps one day.
I'm actually considering the mineral oil idea for my 940 deneb. Ever since that subject was brought up, my mind has been bent on it. It actually doesn't seem that difficult a task. And the rewards could be very good. Since certain chips will run way beyond stock, even at low voltage its very tempting to try this. Since I have my primary now, fooling around with my secondary could be fun! And I might have an idea for cooling the mineral oil to a very low temperature. Still researching the idea.

Got my replacement Velociraptor. Not too impressed with the way it was packaged. If I had seen the UPS driver, I might have refused it. But it looks like the drive was fairly protected. I would have liked to have seen packing foam though. It's probably fine though. Hopefully this one goes beyond 1 yr eh LOL!

That's poor really. The drives from Scan come encased in inch thick bubble wrap.

The black things you see on the sides, seem to suspend it in the air. The material feels like it can absorb minor - moderate impacts. Like you though, I would prefer either 1inch thick bubble wrap, or packing foam. I'll probably wait til this weekend to play with it. I hate hanging up my computer mid week LOL!

Oman7,
I think you care enough that you won't even go there, once you consider all the pitfalls. Dust, especially the fine kind you and I are used to. It makes a mess out of the oil, and makes it look like a dirty, scummy fish tank. Then there's the weight. Most computer desks would collapse from the weight. There's also the consequences of any leak, or a seam in the case letting go, not to mention the RMA situation. Or how about the drive situation? ODDs are not going to be cooled, because you can't run them in oil. I don't think a HDD is going to work either, unless it's solid state, as they aren't 100% sealed and the tiniest speck of oil vapor would be fatal! Small wonder when you consider that a single particle of cigarette smoke can destroy a HDD beyond redemption. Far too many possible problems for just about anyone.

Oman7,
That's standard packaging for a boxed HDD. It protects the HDD better than any other kind of packaging. I always keep a few around in case I have to ship one back. Far batter than bubble wrapping the whole drive!

Im not impressed with the packaging, but I'm not ß!tch!ng either :p I'm sure its fine. I was simply startled when I grabbed the box, and felt the contents moving around inside...
I would NEVER put a HDD in mineral oil LOL! Or an Optical drive for obvious reasons LOL! But cooling the GPU and CPU, etc seems interesting. One day, I think it could be cool just for show. It would be sealed beyond belief. I wouldn't allow dust to get in there ;)

Oman7,
That's the problem, you can't completely seal it, because of the expansion and contraction of the oil. You would wind up splitting a seam on the case. Interesting idea, but fraught with lot's of perils! LOL!!

GM,
Not much detective work at all! Just go to the bottom of the Newegg page to "Company Info" and click "Careers", then click "more", and finally, "Find a Career". It provides a list of all their locations on a menu. Just good common sense! LOL!!

Has anyone here encountered the problem with win7 constantly accessing hdds when it's idling? I've been looking for a solution to this for a while but nothing seems to fix this.

Only happens around 4am, and is I believe, a routine scan of some sort. However, you should always turn Superfetch and Search indexing off if you want a smooth system, as these use 100% HDD usage 24/7 on a lot of machines.
Continuous HDD access outside this can also be caused by Google Chrome if you forget to disable malware scanning.

The 4am thing is probably the degfragger if you haven't turned that off yet. I have superfetch off, but I think I forgot to disable indexing on this install, not that I ever noticed it making a difference. I just wish win7 would leave the hdd's alone when they didn't need to be used.

"SuperFetch monitors which applications you use the most and preloads these into your system memory so they'll be ready when you need them."
Type "msconfig" into the search bar of the start menu and hit enter. Go to the "services" tab and you can disable superfetch from there.
