GDDR5 memory is a bit faster than GDDR3 memory (The G is significant), but both the 512MB and 1GB HD5670s use GDDR5, so there's no issue there like there is with some cards.

Now Sam you did'nt say that back when,I bought this card for my UD3P build you suggested 1GB write off the bat This is'nt because it's a AMD build is it? I don't wanna start a war among video cards and cpu's here like others have,I just want the EVO and the UD3P board evenly matched in video and as.I see it the Max Resolution 2560 x 1600 are the same with all 3 Radeon but the core clock is different my 5770 is 850mhz they are 775mhz that can be bumped up with some Oc'ing and $10 for alittle extra 512mb's to make a 1gb won't hurt my pockets none:)

there's only a $10 different between the 2 cards basic on memory and the 1GB had better reviews!

now you say people have an obsession with graphics memory now what about Motherboard memory? People out here buying 4,6,8 and even more which they don't need to run some programs. I barely use 2 myself but yet insteal, I got 4 cause of a deal at the time am. I throwing my money away on that to? I believe Nobody in here is using all there memory at once if so prove me wrong. I use about 35% take in account at idle I'm running win 7 32bit which only see's 3.25. I found myself not liking 64 cause to many driver issue's and conflicts with software memory depends on how many programs you have running at the same time. I never saw a 100% usage
Ps. Thanks for everybody's suggestions you all are like a Jury in a court room in argument the facts behind closed doors, We all like things different here that's what sets us apart in some issues on parts Quality,Name and Looks my reasoning behind building AMD system is because that Little Bird'ee named Russ. I wanna learn things about the amd side of things also to try and help others down the line...

No, I didn't suggest a 1GB card specifically, I suggested an HD5770. There is no 512MB HD5770, so you are lumbered with 1GB. Also, given my discussion earlier, the HD5770 is a card powerful enough to make use of 1GB, assuming you are making good use of it.
As for newegg reviews, you of course know not to believe a word they say, and if you read the reviews, the majority of them are people whining that you need a powered Displayport dongle to use eyefinity if you don't own a displayport monitor. This is true of all cards. You will notice the clock speeds of the 512MB and 1GB cards are identical.
System memory is a little different to graphics memory. There is no game that can use an excessive amount of graphics memory, it just doesn't happen, but it is up to you how much system memory you use - if you were to open a vast number of instances of a particular program, you could use 20GB worth of memory, if you really wanted to. There is also the issue of crazy games that eat system memory - both GTA4 and Crysis Warhead for example can use 8GB of system RAM in a 64-bit Windows environment.

You made it sound like I was contradicting myself by advising you only to buy a 512MB HD5670 when I told you to buy a 1GB HD5770. Put simply if there was a 512MB HD5770 I would have recommended it to you.

This what you said on page 345
Originally posted by sammorris: Should be a powerful system all round with that card fitted. The HD5770 is by no means a performance giant but where it counts, performance for cost, and especially performance per watt, it's in a class of its own. The HD5770 uses a full 60W less at full load than the HD4870 it replaces, and cuts more than 40W off the idle power consumption as well, resting at 25W.

no what I'm saying is now your saying get a 512mb but back then you said buy a 1gb why the change from then to now atlease it's Radeon and no atlease thing, I was expecting from you was(hey good choice in a card) to go with that's all

No, please try and read my post properly. I didn't recommend you the HD5770 because it was 1GB, I recommended it because it was an HD5770, the memory size had nothing to do with it, the HD5770 is a much more powerful card. The 1GB of memory is overkill but you can't get something that powerful without having to have 1GB of memory.

will what sam is saying is that the 5770 is better than the 5670, so go for that. but if you are to choose thr 5670, go for the 512mb version, as the 1GB version is overkill. its like buying a $500,000 car brand new, when all you need to do is the school run.

Another analogy you could use is say for example it's like 512MB memory is a set of tyres rated for 100mph and 1GB is a set of tyres rated for 200mph. You've no need to buy the 200mph tyres since the HD5670 is the equivalent of a vehicle with a top speed of 60mph. It's of course, not quite as clear cut as this, but that is the essence of the issue - you are paying money for an extra resource that is too large for the product to take advantage of.

GTA4 is a GPU memory whore! It uses all of my 896mb. I cannot increase certain settings anymore without more GPU ram. It's a shame, but the effect would probably be marginal at best anyway. Most of my settings are very high anyway. The next GPU will be capable :D Perhaps 5970 when/if the price comes down in the next 6months to a year.
To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

You can, just turn the limiter off in the config file. Just be advised that if you push it too far (say for example, exceeding the memory on your card by more than 50%) you do risk missing textures. Nothing ventured, nothing gained though!

ok Sam, I'll run with 512mb card,I just left micro center here in my town they have the 512mb Radeon HD 5670 (Redwood) for the same price as the 1GB $119 there card prices higher and another,I was looking over at the motherboards again just eye shopping and saw a ep45-ud3p Rev 1.0 only one there for $83.99 the box did'nt look like it was a customer return either fresh clean box my mind started wonder ,why in the world they have the first revision here so late there should be 1.6's instead
Question what ya'll guys think about this?

I got tired of all these "Mystery" crashes, and set the computer back to stock 2.8GHz. I figure if I still have the same problems, which I do, as Firefox crashed the first time I ran it. I think something may have corrupted the OS, maybe one of the changes I made in the setup that didn't work out. I've been noticing little file errors, things like the blinking cursor in note pad won't stay where it was when I minimized it. Stupid stuff like that, but errors, none the less. Tomorrow when this download finishes, I'm going to wipe the drive and lay down a fresh copy of XP. I don't think anything is wrong with the computer because I haven't overvolted anything, and there's been no overheating issues. It's weird, as it can run Orthos for 10 hours and it doesn't crash, but will lock up the computer about 75% through DVDRB/CCE! I've also been getting file errors showing in both Tunup Utilities 2010 1 Click maintenance, and 1 Click fixer Frankly, I can't think of anything else to do!
Unless someone has a better idea, I'm going to wipe it and start over!

I suppose I am one of the longer-term members here. The only thing keeping my post count down is that I don't post much outside the stickied threads. But I'm on at least a couple times a day.
Been a long time. I joined on 18 of January '06 :) I have some 4000 posts but a good chunk of them are safety valve.

Will: It's quite possibly old stock they found hiding in a drawer somewhere! As for the HD5670s also remember brand is of reasonable importance, if the 512MB card is a good brand and the 1GB a cheap and nasty one (or even vice versa) then you want the better branded card, it does make a difference, not for performance, but for reliability and warranty.
Russ: These things do happen sometimes, it's all I can suggest
