I read the add Russ, yes interesting, I also checked newegg on pricing, everyone was out of stock, are these things that popular or just a shortage so to speak? Cause if it's not because of shortage there must be a lot of people with big bucks out there.

That has got to be the malware crap that occasionally pops up on google, I have friends and nieghbors that got hit with it several times, it's almost unavoidable at times, the sites look totally legit, actually I'm suprised they cought this one cause normally they do nothing.
Hell even I got hit with one several weeks ago searching on google, it was a bad one, normally malwarebytes kills it but not that time, I was real lucky in wiping it out, I use AOL as my browser and using AOL it would not let me continue but I was able to using IE, so I wiped out AOL, and reloded it and somehow that worked, if I had been using IE searching google I would have been up the creek, somehow I got lucky.

Yeah quite easy, and all you need to watch is heat since you can't mess with the voltage [easily] as far as I know. I use RivaTuner to set the fan and clock speeds.
Seeing my 3dmark score go down makes me wonder if it's beneficial though lol.

I've never heard of 3DMark scores going down when you overclock a Video card. I know mine have always gone up!

Maw, Russ: It's quite easy for 3dmark to go down when you overclock a graphics card. Firstly, 3dmark scores are variable, within around 200 marks. Secondly, if you run 3dmark more than once without restarting the PC, you will lose a lot of your score. Thirdly, if your video overclock isn't totally stable, it can cause dropped frames, which will lower your score substantially.
Russ: See the graphics card thread. The GTX480 is an absolute joke. I'm sure idiots will buy it, but it's a complete waste.
Fred: The GTX480 comes out on April 12th. This weekend was a press launch.
GTX480 vs HD5870
Performance: GTX480 9% faster.
Power usage: GTX480 50% more power hungry.
Heat: GTX480 20ºC hotter with stock cooler.
Noise: GTX480 fan speed at least 50% faster than HD5870 due to extra heat.
Cost: GTX480 40% more expensive.

Guys, i need some graphics card help, matched to a particular CPU.
My eldest wants to play Sims3 and her current PC isn't up to the job graphics wise.
I've just been googling, her mobo is a Foxconn MCP61PM2MA, not sure if that's the exact model but suffice it to say that it has a PCIe x16 slot and the CPU is an AMD X2 4200+ which is 2.2GHz. I know virtually nothing about AMD CPU's and bought this machine about 3yrs ago but i do know that it's pretty much at the same level of my Intel C2D E6400's so i'm au fait with how powerful the CPU itself is.
Anyways, as i know nothing about graphics cards i'm after some advise as to what card i can get, i don't understand the differences listed here ~ http://www.thesims3.com/game/systemreq
I'm still out of work so have to watch the pennies, would appreciate a pointer towards a decent enough (VGA) card that is a tad future proof but as the kids don't play PC games over and above Sims games it doesn't have to be too future proof.

The 8400GS may run the Sims 3, but I doubt it would do so very well, there'd probably be a great deal of frame rate lag, even on the minimum settings. If you could get hold of something like an HD5450 or better yet an HD4650, that should work off a basic power supply and provide a much nicer experience.

What about the HD4350 ?, i only ask as i just stumbled on one on Amazon for £30ish while looking for 5450's.

I have one I play Far Cry II with, Roller Coaster Tycoon and a number of other games with. 512MB, 128 bit GDDR3 memory, DX-10 and HDMI. I know you prefer nVida, so this is about the best you will find for your purposes, unless you catch a sale somewhere. Good card!

Thanks, i'll have a look at that too. I'm actually not fussed over Nvidia or ATI, i'm an onboard video guy, the one i end up choosing will be the cheapest as long as it's good enough. Thanks for the ideas guys, am googling your suggestions
edit- looks like the 9500GT isn't VGA so i'll have to skip that one, thanks anyways

I mainly avoided the 9500GT as the last I checked the HD4650 was cheaper, and it's certainly a much more powerful offering, but in terms of second hand stuff, I'm not sure what exactly you'll find. The HD3450 is a much older and more basic card, and is really no better than the 8400GS.
Note: most DVI-only cards come with DVI to VGA adapters when new.

Yeah, that's the conclusion i was coming to to about the HD4350. Am just googling on the HD5450, it's only £33ish on Amazon, am trying to sift thru crap info on the web as obviously a lot of people out there will class anything that isn't the latest and greatest as being inferior, am looking to see if the HD540 is sufficient or whether it's worth going HD4650. The HD5450 wouldn't be of any use to me in future if it needed upgrading again as i only use onboard video on most machines so it's just a case of which of the two cards to go for.

well the HD5450 is well ahead of onboard video, the HD4650 absolutely trounces it and yet the HD4650 still isn't as powerful as the best card you could buy in early 2006. Onboard video is very underpowered as a whole.

I'd recommend a P55A-UD5 or P55A-UD4 over the P55-UD5 due to the newer socket design, less likely to burn out at high overclocks. I don't trust the Foxconn sockets at all :P
