And both of my gigabyte boards hate my Kingston Flash drive...
I may try a different brand next time. Perhaps MSI. The MSI board I have currently continues to work unhitched...
Creaky, are you saying that your network has no wait time to refresh. Because I believe XP was nearly NO wait time for refreshes...
To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

Installing a single a 80mm slot cooler didn't drop the MB temp even 1C, does anyone think it might help if it was a 120mm (or 2x120mm) slot cooler so it would be right beneath the chipset? Sticking my hand in where the chipset is I can feel a very small amount of airflow but I guess it just isn't enough, or the board likes to run hot.

Idle temps are 46C with side of case off and 43C with the side on. So far I haven't seen it get over 48C, but this is a fairly cool time of the year.

I should have asked before, but what's the motherboard model. Actually if you can send me a link, I should be able to give you some decent advice.

Thanks Russ. :) Red_Maw have you "fixed" your fan direction and what about your chipset coolers; do they have fans or "significant" cooling?? ;)

Considering that the meaty part of your NB Heatsink is wider than mine, I would see if you could mount a 40mm vertically on the memory end of the heatsink! Just be careful of the heatpipe that runs through it. Have it blowing from the front of the computer towards the rear, and it should drop 8-10C.
Oh! Not just any fan, but arguably the best 40mm fan on the market today!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835129036
The specs speak for themselves!
2200 RPM
6.5 CFM
26 dBA
Most 40mm fans spin at anywhere from 8000 to 15,000 RPM and higher, don't have ball bearings, and are junk! On my P35-DS3R, I screwed one right to the top of the NB Heatsink and it dropped the temp over 10C, the exact same amount as the Enzotech Forged Copper NB Heatsink, using the same fan. The fan is also 40x40x30, a bit thicker than all the other 40mm ones. Best 40mm I've ever seen and not heard!

Russ

I would'en know what you would think of this one.I was reading the reviews people was getting out of this cooler with the new C3's chips that . i could find it seems to me all the new C3's are at 46c to 47c straight out the box with the stock cooler and the 3 pipe after marker cooler as well but after having the 3 pipe Artic 64 hooked up and dropping the 4 pipe Cooler Master on it helped by 12 degree drop:) Good Luck Greensman on your choice!!!

We'll that is an idea, but I'd have to get rid of my oversized cpu cooler, which may fix the problem in itself lol. This is what it looks like inside my case:

Red_Maw,
My, it is a bit crowded in there! LOL!! See where the red line is? There looks to be enough room below that to fit a 40mm fan. It doesn't appear that the heatpipe comes all the way out this end of the NB heatsink. Just be careful so you don't put a hole in the heatpipe itself.
With mine I put my video card in the lower 8x slot because of heat issues with the motherboard temps. the heatsink actually goes under the video card, if it's in the top slot, as it looks a bit like a door stop!
Best Regards,
Russ

Red_Maw... I'm looking at your pic and it seems you need to make sure you have your fans all doing the same thing on the cooler and then the exhaust fan too. ;) I'm sure you do but make dang sure they are.... if you can get a few more cpm's out of the back fan to make sure it's pulling enough air out that would be good too. :) NOW how bout the "intake" from the side panel?? I'm betting with proper "side air flow" you can drop your temps anywhere from 5C-10C. I know cause I've done it before... another option is pulling your chipset coolers and re-applying TIM... NOT sure I'd do that at this point but it's a viable option. ;)
Russ I'm not seeing a place to "mount" dat fan you is talking about... I like the idea fo sho but where does he put it?? I looked the mobo up on the EGG so just asking. :)
add: Russ you posted as I was writing. :)

Will,
Only the 965BE though. The 955BE/C3 seems to run cooler. Chris has one running at 3.8GHz with a Freezer 64 on it, and it runs very cool according to what he posted. If the Freezer 64 Pro doesn't work out for me, I'll have to go with the Noctua NH-U9B SE2 92mm SSO CPU Cooler, and make new brackets for it so it can be mounted exhausting to the rear. It's present mounting for AMD motherboards points the air at either the PSU or the Video card. I don't like the Cooler Master because it's so tall, I would have to give up my side top exhaust 80mm fan, and I would rather not do that if I can help it! Besides, I'm only looking for an everyday 3.8GHz to begin with. I can use the 19x CPU multiplier and the memory will be spot on at 1066MHz, and more importantly be running in EPP mode with the memory under the control of EPP, a noticeable improvement in overall speed! I can't do that with mine because of the locked CPU multiplier. I'll either sell the 630 if it doesn't work in Oxi-II, or keep it for a backup. No one at AMD or Foxconn seems to be able to give me a definitive answer as to whether the 630 will work in the AM2+ motherboard I have in Oxi-II. The motherboard can handle a 95w CPU, and it will be running stock, so I'll give it a shot and see if it works. It should work in any AM2+ motherboard though! It does have the DDR2 memory controller.

There's no side fans on this case, just 3x120mm front (intake), 2x140mm top (exhaust, blocked by cpu cooler as you saw) and 1x120mm rear (exhaust, again occupied by cpu cooler).
I'll let you guy's know how the 40mm fan works out once it arrives, thanks for the help.

Red_Maw I"m afraid of the fan you may have ordered. Looking at the mobo again it seems you only have a few mm of room to install a little fan. You might want to look at ordering a "thin" fan just in case. ;)
Is there room for a "side intake" fan on the case?? If so I'd install one today!! :p

Omega: I have a Win7 and a Server 2008R2 PC networked together, so same thing essentially. No lag here. I will lag if I select an idle drive as they're set to spin down when idle but no lag there. Perhaps there's a setting set to scan drives, and yours too are spun down at idle. I know that used to be a problem for me in Vista I think it was.
Have you tried your USB drive in a USB hub?
Personally I think having a 40mm fan drop chipset temps by 10 degrees implies a problem with airflow through the case, which is normal if you're going for silence, and if you are, you can just leave the chipset unsinked, having them run that warm doesn't cause any problems.

I actually agree with you Sammy and the reason for asking about the side "intake" fan.. ;)
Because I'm lazy and can't remember (CRS disease) ... what case do you have Red_Maw?

A good example of this is my PCH which gets to 63C when I play games with my side fans off, due to the immense heat of the nearby 4870X2s. If I turn the side fans up to max, that drops to the low-mid 30s.

For a week or so now i've had a section of lady's tights on, on the front of my Antec 900 more specifically :p (and no i don't know what denier they are). Got sick and tired of all the dust and tumbleweeds coating everything inside. As this machine is running Seti@Home all the time when it's on (ie i won't have the machine sat idling when i'm not encoding) the temps previously were up to approx 60C, now we've had a couple of really warm days (Yay!) i'm up to 62/63C. I'd rather suffer those 2 or 3 extra degrees to keep out all the crud. Obviously i'll have to keep an eye on the temps as the summer finally approaches though.
