Here's an interesting bit I just came across at Overclock.net
Quote:
Hello, new user here. I recently put together my new system and I'm running into some temp problems with my i7. I'm using the Noctua NH-D14 cooler with mx-3 paste and here are my results:

*Ambient ~25-28C*
i7 Stock clocks + default BIOS settings:
Idle: 40-45C
Load(Prime95): 62-70C

OC @ 4.01Ghz(EIST, C1E off):
Idle: 44-48C
Load: 74-81C

Doesn't these temps seem high for this cooler? I'm looking at reviews and other users with the Noctua, and they're getting high 20s to mid 30s idle. It's also strange that the idle both OCed and stock are roughly the same. I tried reseating the heatsink multiple times and rotated it in the other position. Also tried various different pastes(AS5,MX-3, NH-1) and application techniques (line, dot) and temps remained relatively the same. Opening the case up made little to no difference in temps as well. Double checked all fans, and they're running up to speed and in the right direction.

I also tried the stock intel fan, and at stock settings and 2 cores are idling at 58C!(other two are around 50c) and if I ran prime95 it shoots to Tjmax so I quickly shut off the PC. Could this mean a bad cpu or mobo temp sensors? I didn't think stock Intel cooler could be this bad.. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

I googled "temperatures Core i7 930", and was very surprised to find that these high temps seem to be the norm for the 920, 930 and 940 when overclocked. When people inquire about this on many other forums and tech places, everybody seems to feel that these temps are fine??? My old Pentium D-940 didn't get that hot at 3.94GHz. Even my older 3.0GHz Prescot didn't get that hot at 3.83gHz. Just an observation on my part, but load temps of 74-81C seem awful warm to me. Am I not understanding or missing something here?

Hmm, I'm not sure if the Samsung drives are 4K block or not. The first WD 2TB drive (WD20EADS) was not but the second (WD20EARS) was.

That's just like the temps I'm getting, which was my reason for trying WC. With a cool ambient it's not too bad once it warms up it's impossible to cool (I'm hitting 68C at stock right now).

That's insane, sounds like it's not applied properly, or you're definitely not using stock volts!

Sam,
I could be wrong, but I seem to remember a pic of Red_Maw's cooler setup, showing the fan on the rear of the cooler instead of the front. There appeared to be about 1/2" in between the end of the fan and the back of the case, with the case fan being off-center from the cooler's fan. The back pressure that might create, could be the reason for the high temps. I suspect that the fan is on the back of the cooler, instead of the front because the fan got in the way of two of the memory slots. I'm not 100% certain, but I do seem to remember the pic, and was wondering about that.

That won't help, but the sort of temps Maw's getting are more like there is no fan attached at all, backpressure isn't quite that bad!

Sam,
The Noctua D14 uses two fans. Usually one in the front and the other in the middle of the cooler, so you are not just backing up one fan, you are backing up both of them. 30C is pretty darn warm, warmer than my room gets in the summertime, so I wouldn't at all be surprised. A Coolit ECO would solve that problem very quickly. Besides, unless I'm wrong, I think he is talking about 68C under load, which would seem reasonable under those conditions.

The cooler is setup properly, I made sure to get ram that woul fit. I have actually re-seated it once before because of the temps but there was no noticeable change. And yes the 68C temp is only hit when running a full load (it was WCG but that's pretty close to linpack).

Couldn't have put it better myself Jeff ;)

Hey russ, did you post pics of your coolit installed? Wich page was that on? I'd like to see exactly what you've done :) If you have posted this already, I apologize. Sometimes things go over my head, unless I'm the one asking the question ;) I'm curious how the Gigabyte heat pipe will be effected, when some of the circulation has been removed...

Oman7,
Thanks for the kind thoughts!

No I didn't post pics of my Coolit installed. I don't have a working camera at the moment. I tried to do it with my web cam, but it's just too fuzzy. I need more light to sharpen it up.

If there are problems with the MB temps, the solution is quite simple. I took the 70mm fan off of the 630 Quad stock aluminum block cooler, and it slips right in between the pump housing and the plastic thumb screws snugly. Let it blow right at the back of the video card. I took the blue GigaByte caps off of the heatsinks, as they are only held on with thermal tape. The motherboard temp was 53C before, but now run's at 36-37C after moving the video card back to the 16x slot. The fan will fit snug enough as to not need securing, but I will still get a long zip tie to go around the cooler mount and the fan, just to be sure. Even though the pump housing somewhat blocks the fan, you can't hear it running at 3200 rpm, because of so much open space, and the amount of air it blows, is strong and very cool, by the feel of it. The heatpipe coolers work very well, as long as you can get some air flowing over them. It scatters enough cool air to cool the VRMs as well.

I'll try to take some pics of it tonight, as I got a brighter bulb for a Goosneck desk lamp (think Pixar) Russell used to use, and cleaned it's reflector, so I should be able to get a good enough picture now!

Best Regards,
Russ

Yes indeedy. A picture IS worth a thousand words ;) That pic makes me jealous. I'm even more tempted to pick one of those badboys up. You know what...I'm gonna take a shot! 75$ is a reasonable risk. LOL! My car has presented its problem to me quite nicely ROFL! What I mean is, since I know what the problem is, I can rest easy. Should be an easy fix. I'm gonna drain the Transmission fluid tomorrow, filter it, replace the transmission filter with a new one, run it for a few weeks, see how it does, than consider having a flush and fill service. The fluid really doesn't look that dark. If I can get a few more thousand miles out of it, I should be happy. Lets just say that the transmission has been shifting funny, on the count of the VSS(Vehicle Speed sensor) sending bad signals, due to metallic particulates in my fluid. Trust me, I've been through this before...

I think I'll purchase the coolit in the morning. (after my deposit has gone through ;)

Thanks for the pic russ xD

Kevin,
You're most welcome. Did you notice the optical illusion on the right hand hose covering coming out of the radiator? Looks for all the world like the hose is kinked, right? It's the visual overlap of two small curves in the line. I noticed that and tore the cover off, just to be sure! LOL!! Not much of a pic, because it's almost impossible to keep everything in focus at that distance with a webcam, but it does work well and doesn't look like something that's been cobbled up. It's truly amazing how quiet that fan is with no real back pressure on it. Much louder when mounted on the stock Aluminum heatsink of the 630 Quad. I'm going to shut it down after this post and install a grille on the fan. I wouldn't want to accidentally get a finger in there! Credit for that mod, goes to Will! You can clearly see the difficulty in mounting any fan to the heatsink.

Warmest Regards,
Russ

So one of the covers that you referred to removing on your MOBO was it covering that pipe below the rad fan and to the left of the eco pump?
