I agree with Sam on the PSU. That is a much much less power hungry system than my own and I run fine with a 620HX. I think my only hitch would be the number of SATA connectors if I should ever add more drives, but Corsair will send them to you if you contact their customer support. My 620 only came with a single PCI-e 6/8 pin lead and I needed a second for my second 4870. Corsair were more than happy to send me one for the shipping cost :D

Also I can actually argue against the HAF X. It has smaller fans than the regular HAF and is less configurable. Unlike the HAF 932, there is no real way to mount 4 120mm fans to replace the 230s. Many people I know bought the HAF with exactly this intention. The build quality is a bit nicer, but overall the HAF 932 is a better designed case.

Also, the GPU is fine, but there are many faster cards for not much more. As of right now, it will probably do you fine, but for any sort of hard gaming get the fastest card your budget will allow. I'd say save money and get a lower wattage PSU so more can be spent on a video card. Realistically, a good quality 500W could run that system absolutely problem-free.

well i stand corrected. the prices on those PSUs have changed big time from lastnight when i looked.lol from the 650 up to the 850 is $50 now. so i guess i will be getting the 650hx again..

tbh i dont like the new 942 it isnt as wide as the 932 or my 922 its just barely wider than the RC690 i will be sticking with the 932, but the black editon. which dont have the side 230mm fan just clear window panel
heres a link to the 2 versions of the 932...not to sure i like the black editon or not??

Rob: All looks good, but why the 850W PSU? Sirely a 650 or 750 would have enough connectors?
Sam,
I haven't owned an Ati since, so I figured it was time. i remember asking on the thread about buying the X800GTO, and I think it was Soph who set me wise to the deal with the extra 4 pipes, and advised me to buy it. I think he had an X850GT at the time. I just put my Newegg order on the card, so I'll have a busy weekend coming up. Lots of work to do! LOL!!

On a happy note, I'm off to the Doctors in a little while. Strange things have been happening to me this week, and I'm dying to find out what it all means, and what they think! More later. Wish me luck!

Russ

I'm currently running the AMD Edition which is a red 932 with the side window and some AMD logos. I'd highly recommend the original version with the sidefan as that basically is what makes the cooling awesome. Sure the side window version will still cool very well, but the one with the 230mm fan will be much better than everything else.

Didn't spot the HAF X, yeah, the X is nowhere near as good as the original 932. Also, how many cables do you actually need? That system will actually run off a 400W CX, it just dependson how many ODDs/HDDs you need. From an enthusiasts' perspective, the graphics market is still volatile with the HD6 series looming on the horizon. However, the HD6 cards won't be a quantum leap like the 4 and 5 were so I don't forsee much of a shakeup in the midrange sector.

Not seen the Black edition HAF (The normal one's already black! lol) but if it's like the AMD red version, it does away with most of the cooling for the sake of style, in my mind defeating the point of the case. Your decision of course :P

Good luck at the doc's Russ! :)

Looks fine, if that's a cheap deal then go for it.

Rob: What he means by something faster is a faster card than the 5770, for example a 5830.

Yeah definitely good luck with that Russ. I never did like visiting the doctor. It always seems I come out with more problems than I went in with XD

Exactly. The 5770 is no doubt a quite decent card, but there are much better cards out for a comparable or slightly higher price. The 5830, for example, is about 15-20% faster and similarly priced(assuming the 5830 is slightly faster than a 4890 and the 5770 is slightly slower or similar to a 4870). If you can swing it, a 5850 would be the best one to get but those are still pretty expensive :S

Again, this is assuming you drop a bit and get a cheaper PSU, thus freeing up more budget for a video card.

I've spent two days trying to get dual monitors up and running at work in Puppy linux. Linux is great and everything but boy, it's like 1995 again sometimes. Linux has supposed to have come on leaps and bounds since those days.
My new work's windows laptop (Dell i3 330 something or other) has a posh E-Port Plus docking station, which is driving two 22" Dell E2210H monitors (one off DVI and the other is VGA as the two DVI's on the dock can only run cloned images ie you can't run 3 separate monitors off the dock, quite annoying actually, a bit of crap design going on there. But anyways, within a minute or two XP has two monitors running, zero effort, and i use Ultramon to swap things between the two. Effortless to setup and a joy to use.
The dock was running various disparate monitors until the new 22" came, not that WIndows cares.

Linux on the other hand, what a nightmare. My current work's linux box is a Dell C2D E2180 tower, Two 19" monitors (slightly different Dell's), something like 5 different graphics cards and two days/many frustrated hours of manual editing of the xorg.conf file later, have finally got the two screens up and running, can swap things between them. Am running my own trusty old PCIe Geforce 6200 that lived in my Q6600 box for 3 years alongside a PCI Geforce MX400 or 440 (it has dual VGA ports but don't need 3 monitors, plus i've got my own P4 linux laptop on the desk at work as well now). Am pondering putting my spare HD4650 in the E2180, but first i need to find another 19" Dell from around the office so that i have two identical monitors. Just because linux is sooooo picky. Don't even get me started on installing various different linux ISO's as different kernels have differing support for Nvidia cards.

Trouble is that the HD4650 is overkill for work, i will probably stick with the 6200 as i have a DVI adapter on order so that i can drive the two monitors off the one card. I can then leave the linux box up and running permanently, as i take the i3 lappie home every night, it's an E5510, the perfect sized screen and a great keyboard.
(The new Dell laptop came with Win7 but even a manual reinstall wouldn't allow it to join the Windows domain properly, hence why XP is on there, Win7 doesn't buy you anything at work anyways).

So the word of the day is, don't try multiple monitors in linux unless you have identical monitors, or just wimp out and use Windows (or in my case, do both) :p

Like Estuansis said, I would spend a little more, and go with the 5830, or spend even more and go with the 5850. Though they cost a fair penny ;)

I just retested both of my 60mm fans, and an 80mm CM fan. I realized that my initial testing was done on 5V, and had to retest them ;)
The 60mm fans move some serious air on 12V! One is highly obnoxious, while the other is only moderately to loud. They will NOT be going in the case though LOL!
The 80mm fan moves almost as much air as the 60mm fans, and is only 1/4 as audible. I'm guessing if I put it in the case, it WILL effect the northbridge temps, and I MAY be able to hear it, but I doubt it. I'll be running that test here shortly.

First I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and wishes. I do appreciate that. It seems I'm going to be around for a while longer. I had a blocked Artery, that's become unblocked. My Oxygen percentage has jumped from 82% to a more normal 95-97%. I can walk normally and even run, for the first time in years. I have to do some exercising to get some muscles back in shape, but aside from that I've been feeling different and much better for over a week. There's much more to it, but this really isn't the place for it. Suffice to say that I'm going to be around a bit longer than I expected, and I'm grateful for that.

Warmest Regards to all,
Russ

That is one of my biggest complaints about linux lol. None of the "easy" ways to set them up ever work but it's doable sometimes. I don't know much about puppy but with gnome it ended up being as "simple" as installing the right graphics driver and editing/adding a few lines in xorg.conf (with an nvidia gpu, probably different for anything else).

Well shoot! I guess I didn't fully understand russ. Or perhaps I didn't wanna believe that a 60/70mm fan were the only fans that could fit around the northbridge. I took one look, and knew that the 80mm fan wasn't gonna work. I've been fiddling with a powerful 60mm fan for the last half hour. It did not effect the north bridge temps. I hovered it all around the board. I held it around the VRM, the heat pipe below the CPU, and the southbridge. Virtually zero effect on northbridge temps. The 60mm fan I was using pushes more than enough air to effect any temperature. So I'm at a loss...

See how the fan goes in between the bottom of the pump housing and the two lower plastic lock pins? It fits snugly right in that space. Keeps the motherboard nice and cool!

Best Regards,

Russ, this was your post a while back, submitting a picture of your coolit. I wanted to see it again, and its gone. Any thoughts on that?
Furthermore, are you certain, that your 70mm fan is 15mm depth? Are you sure it isn't 10mm? My 60 x 60 x 10 barely fits between the pump/cooler and the northbridge. I'm really confused here. Another post I saw had you recommending removing the heatsink all together :S

Oman7,
I sent the 70mm anyway! It's on it's way! Just went to the post office! Unless there's something drastically wrong, it should do the job just fine! Sent USPS! You will see what I mean by it moving serious air, quietly! I even checked it to see if it fit on mine. Just slip it in, frame side down, and unless something is wrong, it should drop those temps. Here's the pic. Don't know what happened to the original on ImageShack!
