I may try reformatting the drive, and use it for something for myself. Already ordered him a new drive. But I sure would like to have it reallocate the sectors, so that I can clone the data to a new drive. Gonna have to search about reallocation, without reformatting. Never had to do this before :p

Bad sectors reallocate automatically on all drives. If unrecoverable sector errors occur, the spare sectors are used up, and the drive becomes a problem. If of course, that's actually happened. Check with several other programs including ones that state they can read the drive first.

This is what that result mentioned.
"A simple disk surface scan won't be enough to force the remap operation. You need a read/write surface scan to remap the sector. The best option should be a tool that knows about what should be read from that sector so that it has some option to apply the best fix to the missing data."
That tells me it doesn't do it automatically. It most certainly should on an xbox though eh? Without a pc to perform such operations, it should do maintenance like that on its own. Looks like M$ forgot something!
To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

I had this too to be fair, I had to reformat a 400GB Samsung because it had one bad sector.

Nah, I backed it up first. The bad sector didn't lose me any data, it just meant the drive kept clicking, hanging the system and causing BSODs.

I notified ddp about the problems I'm having with AD, and he told me to contact Admin about. I just don't know who the Admin is. I'm currently 4 pages behind, as the pages haven't advanced for more than a week now, and I'm not getting any email notifications for any of my subscribed threads.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Russ

No problems with viewing threads or emails here, just the double post on a new page bug, where your post only appears after a second reply on the page is posted, and linking to a new page takes you to page 1 of the thread. As far as admins go, drD is about the only one I know of, who I think is the head of the site. Lethal_B I haven't seen in a long while.

Sam,
It figures, I complain and things start working again! LOL!! Right after I posted, I started getting notifications again! It wasn't going to page 1, only back to the last properly working page. I'm just glad it's hopefully fixed.

That's strange russ. I get notifications, but at the beginning of a new page, it brings me to page one of the forum. Until enough posts have been made, it would seem.

Oman7,
It's ok! This thread just started working properly again. So has the AMD Building thread, and the scan thread.

That's why I have backups of everything XD
Originally posted by sammorris: 3 years is pretty standard, most drives only come with a 5 year warranty. Black drives are as I say, the premium product, so some of them come with 5.
I'm assuming the first '5' is a typo, should be a '3' imo.
Originally posted by omegaman7: I get the feeling that the black drives have a different quality control process. Why do the green drives only have a 3 yr warranty?
Same quality control process (I think), the drive is placed in a category based off how it does in certain tests. All WD Black drives meet enterprise standards so there is a difference assuming the other drives do not (I don't believe they do but I could be wrong). Personally I only buy Black series drives since my data is worth the extra money to me.
Also you can find some pretty good deals on the FASS drives, I picked up two for 135US in June.
Originally posted by sammorris: Believe it or not there's an ISP in the UK that charges more, and makes the pricing structure very complicated just to keep out people who don't understand internet, to make their lives much easier and prioritise their network for people who use it properly :P
That sounds great to me, I'd sign up lol. I can't complain about my current ISP though since I get way more than I pay for by being near the backbone :)

Red_Maw, I make backups of everything too, but it would be unfortunate to have to rip all/most of that data back to the hard drive. At least stuff that I like to have at my fingertips ;) I can't wait til they lower the ridiculous prices on Blu-Ray media. 1 25gb backup, is a lot better than 6 dvd backups :D
Yah, the performance of the black drives + being an enterprise drive is certainly worth the extra money. I can definitely see the advantages of the Green drives though. Quiet, price is good, probably run cooler too. Which would remove a slight temperature variant from the case ;)
To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

ddp: Ah ok, I thought he used to be a staff member, though I was never sure exactly how staff members and mods differed.
Maw: No backups here yet, I know what I need to buy, but it costs £580 :S 14TB of space is expensive! You're correct on the typo by the way.
The quality control process, and indeed the performance tests aren't really relevant any more, as the Caviar Blue line is no longer being expanded, so all the 7200rpm drives are Blacks, all the 5400rpm drives are Greens. If a drive does exceptionally well in testing i imagine it goes into the enterprise grade equivalent of these two products. I've not seen FASS drives anywhere near that cheap, and certainly never seen them cheap in the UK :P
Too noisy for me though, the WD1001FALS is bad enough!
As for the ISP, nah you wouldn't want it, they charge per-gigabyte, you need to be rich!
Omega: The green drives do run a good 10ºC cooler than the Blacks, but for me, it's mainly that I can't hear my 10 WD Greens over the 3 7200rpm drives that are in that system, so to replace it all with 7 new WD Greens, sounds good to me :)

Dang that ISP would bankrupt me :\
Didn't know that the blue line was dead, kinda makes sense since they were basically the same thing as the black drives.
I saw them for sale when searching the model "WD20000LSRTL", although it's been so long I can't be 100% it was USD seeing how well GBP matches.

I back up to other hdd's so transfer time is rather minimal over a gigabit connection. Only one drive has ever failed me though, and that was before I had backups lol.
