I heard a story today Sony won´t replace broken 60 GB Playstation 3´s anymore because they don´t have any left to trade?

Can anyone over here verify this? Is it true? If it is, then we have to get into fixing them up ourselves, or else there won't ber any backwards compatible machines left in a couple of years. I want to check all resistors, capacitors and other small stuff on the motherboard myself. For a possible replacement of parts. Still no sound or image, green light is on but nothing on screen. Standard tricks won't work, somebody already did a reball to no avail. Still the same problem.

Is there a way to do a manual firmware upgrade on this fully bricked system?

I sure hope that's not true. I just got a 60Gb model from a buddy. He said If I can fix it, I can have it. Not sure what's wrong with it yet.

To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

Hi, Did anyone experience a problem after the YLOD fix, and have the fan automatically go into fan test elevating to full blast? It is so annoying that I have to turn it off but everything else seems fine and doesn't seem to run hot.I have been going through the posts and could not find anything.

Also, I had a customer who had the video artifact problem and keycomp mentioned that a repair shop cut one of the ground pin from the power cable. Any more info on this?

Any help is appreciated.

You've basically got 2 ways to get rid of problems like this however, only 1 option can be the winner. The options are:

1. Send your Playstation 3 over to Sony.
2. Fix the yellow light of death error by yourself with a repair guide.

PS3 YLOD Fix By Sony?

This options sound so... Good... Right? Well, let me tell your something... It's not... Want to know why? Because of 2 reasons that matters a lot. The price, and the waiting time.

You see, when you are actually sending your console over to Sony, you will have to pay them $150 if your warranty has been expired. Also, you will have to wait for literally weeks before you can get your Playstation 3 back.

Mostly it's 2-4 weeks that you'll have to wait, but many people had to wait for more than 1 month.

Basically, this is your best option because it's cheap fast and it will be an easy Ps3 YLOD fix if you use a Playstation 3 repair guide. It's highly recommended to use a repair guide... Because... It basically takes out all the guess work. It contains step by step instructions and also highly detailed pictures from the yellow lights of death error.

When you do this, you won't have to pay $150 because you only have to spend a couple of bucks on the repair guide. Also, you won't have to wait for weeks. In fact, it's high likely that the PS3 YLOD fix will be done within 1 day or even within 1 hour. Here is one i used : http://tinyurl.com/lights-fix

O k so I did the reflow with flux. Unit comes on now and is fine at the xmb and I put in black ops and it will boot up fine, play the cinimatic openings fine but when it finaly tells u to press start to play the game it shuts down within a sec or two. Screen doesnt even have a chance to switch screens. Get the lil popup at the top of the screen that says its overheating. Funny thing is that it shuts down before the fan can even get to its fastest speed. The fan is running but acts like its either slow to respond to the need for more airflow or do the chips heat upthat fast? I dont think the bluray drive even reaches its max speed to read the disk before it trips. Help a brother out lol

I would just like to say that i'm suprise that they are still never before ylod console going ylod. Just remember that if you not going to send your console to sony OR try selling it THEN fix it yourself. FORGET ABOUT PAYING ANYONE MONEY, INCLUDING FRIENDS AND FAMILY, TO FIX IT. DO IT YOUR SELF. you can get help all over the internet or have a friend do it for FREE! OK.

My guess is that you don't have enough thermal paste. You want to spread a thin layer on the top of the chip's heat spreader. Then put the heatsink on then tighten down the 4 screws on the heatsink. Then remove those 4 screws and separate the heatsink from the mobo. You can see that only a tiny amount of the thermal paste made contact with the heatsink. You'll need to add more thermal paste to the motherboard and put the heatsink back on, tighten and then remove again to make sure you have enough thermal paste.

On occasion i'll get ps3's that have been repaired by my competitors and usually this is what they look like on the inside.

Here's a picture of the heatsink, yes that's a gamerdoc warranty sticker that was intact.

Since they charge $120 and i only charge $60 i'll end up getting the console.

Anyway make sure you have enough thermal paste or it will overheat.

YLOD and RLOD are claiming older ps3's. I've fixed about 70 ps3's so far with these issues by reflowing them with my machine. Only one was returned to me (filthy on the inside after only 6 months). Don't go destroying your motherboard with a heatgun, it's not worth it.

The ps3 slim also has power supply flaws and a new power supply is about $100. The bluray lasers are incredibly expensive, and a pain to install (thanks to the slot loading design).

Why does everyone like the ps3 so much?

I don't like the PS3 that much. I'd rather use my PC to game :p I'm sitting on a Ylod PS3, I have no idea what's wrong with it. I really should take another look at it.

It's the same thing that happens to all chipsets that run hot that use lead free solder. The solder cracks somewhere (either top or bottom of the ball) and the chip loses continuity with the board. Ylod is the same as rrod, the gpu got hot enough to soften the solder and as the solder cooled down it cracked.

If you do your research you'll see everything that runs hot and uses lead free solder is doomed. Hp/Compaq laptops with the nvidia geforce go 6000-7200 gpu's, Toshiba/Gateway/Acer/Emachines that use the amd vision gpu are all plagued with the same issue. I just reflowed a gaming laptop today that had intermittent issues that used 2 graphic cards (pics here). Really everything with lead free solder that runs too hot is prone to fail.

Usually ylod is related to the gpu but i always reflow both main chips just to be safe.

Its a smd/bga hot air solder rework/reflow station with a large preheater. There's a link to a picture of it in my sig. If you look on the 360's forums you'll find a few of us have invested in machines to professionally fix xbox's. I took it one step further and opened a computer store that services consoles as well. The ps3 isn't really that much different, i only had to adjust a few things to be able to repair ps3 boards.

Anyway it's not as risky as using a heatgun because you can actually target any chip on the board and heat it to the correct temperature to remelt the solder. With special designed nozzles that fit the chip you can avoid damage to any heat sensitive components like capacitors, though with a machine like this it's still guessing. To be completely positive you have perfect continuity you'd have to xray the board, but nobody besides microsoft or sony would go that far because it's too expensive.

It takes awhile to get used to using the machine but the benefits outweigh the costs. Once you know what you're doing you can pretty much do it in your sleep. Ps3 boards seem to be stronger because i haven't found one i couldn't repair yet.

You're awesome man. Thanks for the info. I imagine your apparatus costs more than 60$ eh? I may just have to keep you in mind for an option ;)

I noticed a Youtube video where a guy used a heat gun. Basically an industrial strength super blowdryer. He seemed to be skilled with that device. I wonder how many he destroyed though, before He became comfortable :S

Yeah i tried the heatgun method and ended up destroying 4 or 5 capacitors. Even though they're easy to replace i ended up just junking the board and replacing the xbox. I figured if i was going to charge people money that they should at least get their money's worth. And yeah i have about $900 into the setup. A basic setup will be about $400 and you'll have to make your own holder. Though obviously it's not worth it if you barely use it.

I dloaded socom n updated firmware last night just to try a game lff the hd just for shits n giggles. Black ops shuts the system down right after the start menu. It dloaded the game but needed an update. So I let it dload all night n it was fine 8 hrs later it was still on n fine. Tried the dloaded game and same thing. When I hit the start button to start the game it shut down.

This article will give you the Safest, Easiest and Quickest way to Fix the YLOD, Red Light of Death.

In order to fix the RLOD/YLOD error on your PS3, you should try the following 3 things:

1 - Restart your console.
2 - Take out all cables, and plug them back in.
3 - Take out the hard-drive, and place it back in your PS3 console.

If these 3 tips didn't help you to fix your PS3 red/yellow light error, then it's high likely that you need to open up your console, and fix the problem from within. I really can't help you with that, because you'll need step by step instructions that's coming along with either videos or pictures. But, you've got 3 options to get your hardware problems solved.

There Are 3 Ways To Fix Your PS3 Red Light Problems.

1) If you have no idea of to fix the PS3 yourself, you could send your PS3 back to Sony and let them figure out how to repair the problem. This can take some time and unfortunately if your warranty has expired you will be paying around $150.

2) Take your PS3 to your local repair shop and let them fix it. The downside to this is that they can't guarantee that your PS3 will be fixed.

3) Fix your PlayStation 3 by yourself. If you don't know how to fix ps3 flashing red/yellow light, then it's no problem. It's not hard or expensive, and I was lucky to stumble across this site that sorted me out in no time.

To fix your PlayStation 3 by yourself, I'd recommend that you take a look at PS3LIGHTSFIX This is a step by step guide with detailed instructions and pictures how to fix your PS3 problems. It also contains bonuses for after your reparation.

I hope this will be of help to you as it was to me, it does cost a small fee but it bloody worked so I was happy enough!

Yes I agree its not my guide matey, but I have used the same one to fix 4 stations so far and only 1 came back after 4 months and I had to redo it (my first attempt). I am no spammer, that you can be sure of, I am only trying to help by giving people a proven method.

So I would appreciate it if you could get your facts right before accusing the innocent.

Should anybody need help with the guide, email me and I will get back to you ASAP.

Many thanks
