I have already figured out how i will do it, (at least in theory lol)
I have an old PC PSU (fortunately is black) i will remove the internals and place the internals from the PS3's PSU plus a 5v charger from a mobile phone for the fan (5v Fan is enough to do the job and it wont make noise either)
I will mod a female and a male electrical plug to connect the 12v from PSU to PS3 and just extend the 5v cables and the grounds.
The electrical plugs in my country looks like this
http://img.diytrade.com/cdimg/236024/776.../POWER_PLUG.jpg
that is why (i hope) it will feat, cause as far as i can think of now the only problem is the space between the 2 metal parts and that can be fixed.
I wanted to place a fan were the PSU is now but the idiots that designed the PS3 have made holes to the side of the BD-Drive
and not to the side that the PSU and the HDD is.
If you remove the HDD cover and you put your hand you can feel that air comes out from there also....but no, no left side holes they cost too much.
Nice, hopefully it turns out positive.Originally posted by ntemis: Originally posted by J_Mora: What if u were to replace the thermal paste on a ps3 that still hasnt gotten the ylod. Hi, i think should prevent it but you have to put it away in the summer and power it on afterwards.
A friend of mine openned it up after 1st year, put artic silver 5 thin layer ;) close it, cure time in dash for a week and all the stuff, played only for 1 hour after that for a long time, checked the fan speeds, updated firmware only through usb never from wifi.
Now re-open it and used Tuniq TX4 thin layer also, this time he used a washer on every screw to push more the heatsink onto chips because the f..ing heatsing is not falling onto the cpu/gpu is falling against it on the back case. Still Ps3 going strong and it is a 60GB first edition 2007 model. When is hammered for long time playing always is with air condition onto 25 Celsius. He is on 3.15 and has UBUNTU 10.04 on it and using it as a pc with mouse and keyboard and never has failed on him, only some game freezes on Uncharted 1 and uncharted 2 but that where game specific freezes and not overheating because GOW 3, MGS 4 ,R&C tools of destruction, infamous , Ninja gaiden Sigma and NG sigma 2, Resistannce fall of man etc never froze the system on him, only uncharted games did one time each.
So yes replacing the thermal paste with a quality one will give you a good working system for a looong time but you have to stay away from summer mid-day playing or you ask for it :)

I think you hit the nail on the head with the varibles. This thread kinda proves it :)
And mine is still working. It still only kicks the fans to high after 3 or 4 hours of play, disc or HD games. But I have no hopes or expectations of it lasting forever. Its a first relase unit! I don't think it was played constantly though, and it sat for 2 years too lol

Everyone on here should do the heat gun trick to reflow the board and reapply the paste.
Put everything back until you get to putting the power supply back in place.
Before you sit the power supply back into position, try putting some rubber pads underneath the power pack.
Abit like the ones you get for the feet on the old xbox.
Put them on all 4 corners, the put you power supply back into place along with the rest of the console.
I found that the console does not get as hot,as the power supply has a little bit of space to breathe.I am sure the the heat of the power supply contributes to the ylod.
Fixed lots using this method as I had them ylod-ing again

Hmm after reading a few of these posts im kindda worried.
I bought a launch PS3 (EU version) from a guy around 5 months ago, he was selling as faulty. warranty sticker was still in place so I guessed it was the cpu/gpu problem. So bought some Antec Formual 5 Siler thermal compound, I read its almost identical to arctic's.
Anyway the reflux fixed it, and not had time to test it much, but the last week I have been playing MAG for at least 4 hours a day. Everything seems fine, though the fan does run a bit as teh console still gets hot whilst playing, but as soon as I stop playing and goto xmb, the fan goes to its lower setting.
So question shoudl I keep the PS3 or sell it? I got it due to it having the PS2 backward compatibility. But now with psjailbreak maybe someone will create an emulator. So should I sell it an get a slim in the hopes of an emulator, or keep this launch console and hope it doesnt ylod again?

i wouldnt sell a perfectly working Unit, but thats just me :)
If it gets ylod again i should though.
if everything is ok i dont see why it would ylod again.
Mine is working just fine and its being too long to remember when i got it fixed, just dont play in mid-day when is too hot outside and always in summer use air condition at 25 celsius and under.
If you dont get the stage 4 fan you will be ok imho.
And replace heatsink paste when you do.

So the position u put the ps3 in and the power supply have a big part in this, great observation. :) Time for another project.lol.

My power supply area is cooler than a nuns crutch, so not sure about that theory.
After lots of research I conclude that most YLOD is caused by heat so an extra usb fan will help but this is irrelevant if your thermal paste has tried out and you hammer your ps3 for 3-4hours.
Also looking at this sony telling us putting a ps3 on its side makes no difference is BS. Heres hoping they bring out a temperature monitor in the jailbreak firmware :)
Sony ripped me off with their launch model ps3, just remember sony every loser wins

I have been opening 40gb and 60gb model for fun recently to repair and had no problems once I seperated the power supply away from the board using that method and had no comebacks, and have noticed that the power supply do get very hot.

Another method is to make the top metal part in your ps3 that covers your board more open by cutting bigger holes for better circulation(where the fan sits on top)

One question, is the psu in the 60gb launch console the same as the ones in the 80gb phat ones? or are they different. Just wondering if the they are different can you replace the launch ones with the newer one if it runs cooler?
If I do the rubber pad thing and lift the psu, do you know how much space there is to work with before you cant put the cover back on? I have some pad but think they may be too thick, may have to cut them down.

Mine lived it's life on it's side (standing up) and YLOD .. but never had fan go above stage 2 in that time too ..
Funny if they were ALL units on their side, and that's all it REALLY is :P

I think that fan not going over stage 2 is a defective temperature sensor.
In normal play over 25 min ps3 should get to fan stage 3 and go forth and back to 2, this is a normal behavior, or else you have a burned or defective sensor chip

hey ylod is one of three possible thing's
1.The most common HEAT SYNC.
basically much like the xbox the heat sync tends to "dry up" therefore overheating the processors as there is no way to transfer the heat away the processors shut down
........simple's it's is a simple fix so long as your carefull!!!!!!!! ie dont go taking a hammer to it ok!!!!
http://www.filefactory.com/file/af246bg/n/YLOD_fix_pdf
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U70SgRDVcBo
2.Power pack.
at ?30 on e-bay and simple to replace.
3.Motherboard.
(i have not tried it)try to super heat the solder on the motherboard which may have moved when the heat sync went bye bye(yes it does get that hot)i tried 1 and 2 on my brothers ps3 ylod and no joy i then suggested this to him and he gave it a go and het presto it worked.
As i have never tried option 3 i would not recommend doing it unless you or someone you know knows what they are doing!!!!!
hope this helps.

Well my solder reflow lasted 7 days :(
Just reflowed one cpu this time (the top one when stood upright) and its alive again
Have to admit the psu is quite hot too, but quite far from the chip I reflowed to affect it, my opinion anyway.
Sony ripped me off with their launch model ps3, just remember sony every loser wins
