I have never updated the firmware. I don't really think that is an issue though now that the FUJI discs have no issues, and they are the exact same code. Or am I wrong with this?

Firmware causes some strange differences. One guy was stuck at 1X due to out of date firmware (just an example of a quirky problem). Normally firmware is to keep the drive compatible with more media. But, on occasion there is more to it. I always make sure to keep the firmware up to date to take that variable out of the equation. What did the test with the DVDInfoPro indicate. http://www.dvdinfopro.com

I bought a 25 spindle of bulkpaq 4x speed dvd + , I burnt 18 of them with movies only to find they wont play in any dvd player in the house, nor will they play in the playstation 2 and guess what ? the buggers wont even play in the PC, the movies are on the discs because they will play in the burner that they were recorded on.; time to go for something different. thats ?25 down the swanny.

Raises some questions. Is it the media? BulkPaq sells a lot of no name merchandise. (Interesting note. A German database was listing the Red 8X as having a Taiyo Yuden production code, but it's bogus merchandise because it isn't a Taiyo Yuden product.) What media are the players compatible with? And are the software and firmware on the PC up to date?

The first thing I'd do is buy some quality media and see if the problem persists.

I finally got to the root of my problem. It was bad ProDisc media, I updated firmware, still nothing, so I sent them back. I have others that work.

Doesn't matter, if you like to gamble. Many find it safer to buy branded at sale prices to get the cost down. Cheaper doesn't always mean inferior quality when you have some idea of what you're getting. As for the no name media, I just can't bring myself to give money to people with no idea of what I'm going to get in return.

Glad to see you got your problem solved. Plus, now you don't have to worry anymore about the firmware, maybe for a while anyway (you need to check support occasionally).

Did you use the DVDInfoPro to check the media or just use deductive reasoning?

na, I didnt bother with the software, as there were so many returns at this store of this particular batch of media, and the fact that I got some fuji with the same ProDisc F01 code and they worked fine, i just went by that.

caution mertline fasely advertising switched part #'s as super grade got general grade. I've been ordering 100 pk's of go4 part# 102-002-100 for a long time now the ones I received this last time are general grade different disks different packaging http://www.meritline.com/ritek-ridata-g04-4x-dvd-r-blank-media-disc-matte-1.html they did change to general purpose down by the ordering links but the description still shows the super grade from what I can tell they changed what I usally get to this part#/ page 102-303-100 / http://www.meritline.com/ritek-4x-dvd-r-media-matte-media.html . after repeated emails they still dont want to admit it and just send rma for more junk. I capture my churches services and burn to dvd's for people and I've wasted tons of time and money buying stuff from local stores that I know probaly will only work for a couple months, so I'm gonna have to get good media and replace all of them.

I've only been ordering 100 @ a time to check out vendor waiting till we where ready to order a big order of dvd's and cd's now I dont know what to do.
we are in michigan USA. and want to get a good price but of course Quality Thanx!!

just got some Riteks from Supermediastore..

8x printable
RITEK R03
Media Product Revision Number 02h

sorry to say failure rate is higher than success rate... burning 6x on 8x discs... surface defects galore, file errors off the charts even in the good sectors... complete garbage...

supermedia had a special on these... dont go for it..

whats more.. the units have no spindle... I hate that... the box showed no damage but there was not enough packing and when I opened the box one of the 50 lots was busted open... DVD's everywhere... maybe this has something to do with it...

So I opened one of the in-tact containers and after three good burns got 4 bad ones..

don't have time for this crap.. really..

Most unfortunately I found my R03's had to burned slow. I tried one at 8X for testing purposes and ended up with unreadable sectors on the surface scan so I knocked the speed down to 4X and still had some stutters during playback. At 2X everything goes well and the results are acceptable.

I normally burn at 4X so having to go down to 2X is more of an inconvenience than anything but I have to say that I've been rather disappointed with the results I've been getting with RiDATA lately.

Thanks for the info. RiData was using Ricohjpn before; especially for the 4X media. I was just wondering if RiData still sold any of the Ricoh or if they've gone strictly with the Ritek.

I've used many many RICOHJPN and they were outstanding. That's why I was so disappointed with the R03's.

If you like Ricoh, the Fuji 4X +R I bought at BestBuy.com the last time was coded RICOHJPN. Fuji was selling 8X +R by TY. I went through 100 Ricoh 4X and now I'm near 50 of the 100 TY and so far no bad burns due to media. Some of the TDK, Sony, Philips, Imation and Maxell +R/RW media has been Ricoh as well. Seems Ricoh has made a lot of media for different brands. It's just a bit difficult sometimes to keep up with the current brands selling the media. The same holds true for a number of brands and manufacturers though. I start checking the databases before I look for a sale to make a bulk purchase.

I have tried e-performance DVD-r for DVD & PS2 backups and it does not work with either.
I have used Memorex DVD+r which works sometimes for DVD & never for PS2.
I have used MMore DVD-R which gives ok results for DVD (works but quality is poor).
I have also tried Ritek Optima DVD-r which so far seems fine on both DVD & PS2.

Supermediastore gave me an RMA with no problems, but the shipping to and from makes returns nominal at best. I have asked distributors for dics ID's over the phone and most of the time they are not forthcoming with this information. Buying on brand name alone (even TY now with all the fakes out there) is a poor choice at best. Whats the best way to deal with this... ?

I got a batch of Optocrap recently by mistake. They all burned at 8x without a single error. Quality tests were acceptable though not great.

Still... 100% burn on 100 discs is fare better than Prodisc or Ritek

The best way and only way to deal with it is to not buy online, you never know what you will get, period. Buy from local shops and know what you are buying. Is it worth it to buy online to save $5 on a spindle of 50 to find out what you got are shit? No, spend the extra few dollars and go to local shops like bestbuy and pick up maxell, or fuji etc when they go on sale. Its really not that difficult.

buying from a local shop wont fix the problem either as you still dont know what you are getting with a lot of brands . taiyo yuden's are not sold in local shops and are some of the highest quality media out there . how else would i get these disc's if i didnt buy online ? i dont want a different brand with the taiyo yuden code as that isnt reliable either .

Then take the time to do a bit of research and learn what you are buying so you do know what you are getting, if you are not sure of a certain brand, then dont buy it. You can get Yudens under the Fuji name at bestbuy right now, and they are on sale, you cannot go wrong with this deal. Who cares if they are under another name (Fuji) they are still genuine, and still the same thing. How can this be not safer than buying online? ... It is.

i use a lot of fuji's . yes the made in japan fuji's have the yuden code i'm fully aware of that and have been for quite some time . i also use taiyo yuden's that work perfect . i buy all of my media online and have no problems with what i purchased and no sales tax , and free shipping a lot of the time .

not everyone uses or even likes fuji films which means buying at local shops doesnt help them at all . buying fuji films at your local bestbuy is not going to solve everyone's media issues . for example my ps2 will not play the fuji's . i surely dont want to buy these for my game backups . so this really doesnt make it any safer buying at local shops now does it ? it isnt !

Well considering I was not even replying to you, I was replying to Moore. Who really cares what you think, or think you know. and yes, it might solve HIS/HER problem, and it answered the question he/she asked. No one asked you.
