DD...I don't know if I can be much help, as I have no experience with SATA drive setups...but at least the situation is out here for others to read.
The slow boot time for me is usually caused by either a jumper being in the wrong place, or from a drive...either CD/DVD ROM or HDD...that has gone bad and still being hooked up. I would test the ROM by itself as a stand-alone master to see what happens.
I would also reset the bios (MB jumper) so that I could go in on reboot and reset things the way I wanted them. I would then see how long a reboot takes.

Thanks for the advice, Doc, I'm off to unplug one of the optical drives to see if I can pinpoint the problem. ;)
One thing I forgot to mention: the PC was working fine until I installed the Pioneer A108, set as Master (replacing a CD-RW set as Master).

I'm also thinking the Pioneer is going to require a firmware upgrade. I don't believe this would account for the slow boot time, however.
_____
Add on: The other thing is that I don't know how much driver support XP has for DVD drives (I use W2K), so it would be a good idea to have some kind of burner software installed like Nero. 'Wouldn't hurt to install Shrink and Decrypter, either.

Hi Sophocles. Thanks for the reply. :)
You're like the cavalry showing up after the battle, though. LOL
I managed to sort this mess out. :D
The Samsung DVD-ROM jumper was actually set to "Cable Select". *ddlooping hides in embarrassment*
I set it to Slave, and, to tidy things up, physically moved the Pioneer above it ("Drive 0" on the cable).
I'm a happy camper. :)
Now - well, actually tomorrow - onto trying to fix my old PC, lol.

Glad you got it resolved. I've done the same thing more than once. Optical drives often have "confusing" markings for master/slave/cs.

Got here late. You can bank on Soph's instructions. The new tech with Dell has been 'Cable Select' for quite a while. Since the drive on the end is recognized as the master, you need to put your DVD ROM there as a matter of speed. Both drives in Cable Select (usually, all the drives on the new Dells are CS). The burner should be hooked to the center connector of the ribbon cable, (recognized as the slave position).
As far as the firmware upgrade, check with the manufacturer site to see what is needed as well as getting specific instructions if it does. Some drives call for special procedures such as removing the drive from
DMA. So, there are variations for setting up to do the ping. If in doubt, it won't hurt to ping the drive again with the latest firmware upgrade.

So DD you've taken the leap to PCI express, I would have recommended homemade. Hmm! Considering how many folks here have Dells, it's safe to say if you need advice you're in good hands.

DD no one really knows what is on topic with this thread anymore so your PC question was just fine.
Well guys I'm beginning to feel like I'm in a hurricane shooting gallery. If Frances doesn't hit us on Saturday then I get a 4 day long weekend but if it does I get a two week mess.

Sophocles,
Hope DD doesn't have all the fun I did with my RB/CCE and the DELL. Anyway, I can see why a lot of people are going with the Dell right now. You can get a good setup cheaper than building it. They also can be had with good sound and video cards. I know, one has more to work with performance wise with the AMD and the associated MBs and chipsets. But the Dell and the pentium is an excellent choice of bang for the bucks.
Yes everyone, there are other good computers, so let me make it perfectly clear. I am not going to say on a public forum that one computer is better than another, I don't need the grief. A lot of really good units are built from components. But, then there are good PCs to be purchased off the shelf. So, I wouldn't attempt to play favorites.
BTW, Sophocles, I hope you have a long uneventful weekend.

I've been fixing Dell laptops and desktops for about three weeks now, so I'm pretty familiar with them as a product, we have about 400 of them at our school. Almost all of the problems were caused by students and dumb teachers. Dell has always been a reputable commercial manufacturer, but I just can't imagine not having built my own, I've been doing it for almost a decade. I have to have the in on every little part and tweak.

Yep, for those capable, the joy is in knowing each commponent intimately. Some of the manufactured units don't lend themselves to tweaking.

brobear, don't blame ya for the disclaimer, boy! would your box be full of mail!
DD, I have the Dell Dimension 4600 and it is excellent piece of hardware. They pretty much give a guy everything he needs and more. Does everything I ask it. So far, anyway. Great support group, they have solved every problem I've called in. 24/7 support.
I keep throwing stuff at it, and it keeps chuggin' away, hope I didn't just jinx myself. lol
BTW, soph, once again, take care. I hear this one makes the last look like child's play.
GO VOLS !

Manufactured PCs are a must for many who just don't want to go through the hassle and risk of doing it themselves. But when I get into a build my eyes glaze over and my brain quickly becomes flooded with endorphins. I begin stroking every new piece of hardware as I lovingly unpack it and neatly arrange it on my work bench. Hmm! Just thinking about it lends a kind of euphoria. I have yet to convince my wife that all this is healthy, but it has to be.:) LOL

This one is truly a monster, it's as fast as Charle but almost the size of Texas, no one in Florida is going to completely escape this one if it doesn't turn. The good news for me is that it has to cross land before getting to me, but if it contiues on its current track I will be on the south west side of it. I feel sorry for the people who got hit by Charlie because they're going to get it again and their houses are already with roofs. Thousands are still without power or fresh water and it's hard to believe its less than an hours drive from my home.

Be careful... and get yourself a battery backup so you can get back online and answer people's questions while the power is out.

Brobear pun warning. Weather this one.
I hope your OK though this one Sophocles.
I'd still rather be back in Florida. It was my favorite place to live. Maybe some day.
My prayers are with you.
Speaking of which I just got the Passion of Christ.
It sits next to my Kill Bill set.

I would like to thank you all for your kind concern, it really does help to make it easier.
The good news is that the storm has lost some of its punch the bad news is I'm now right in the path of its eye. As long as it doesn't strengthen I should be just fine but there's a good chance I'll be without power.
jdobbs
I have two battery backups but with my 22" monitor, and all the stuff in my case I will only be good for about 20 minutes. I did however show your reply to my wife and she's given me permission to get some really good backup power. I failed to mention that my labtop would do just fine. LOL

No pun intended, though sometimes I am bad for them. Haven't you heard the phrase, "Weather the Storm". With this giant, let's all just hope it slows down. They fear it may pick up speed again as it hits the warm coastal waters before coming ashore in Florida.
