@LiquidusX. Removing them isn't a problem. You can do that with a hex editor as L-Burna has shown. I myself have done that too. Problem is the file linking gets screwed up when you take bits out. We need access to the CORE.GT4 file to relink the files properly after that.

@L-Burna. Just a thought. CORE.GT4 can be unpacked to an ELF file using the soz.exe tool provided with Toolboys HDD kit. Is it possible that anything could be done with the ELF once it is unpacked?

But has anyone tried to boot a dual-layer dvd with the cogswap loader?

Signature failed to load ---> Error 69

so now we "only" have to find a way to put the movies back in the core... not simple at all... if only we knew someone skilled at coding...

@Playguy. I suppose you could try a TOC refresh with a DL game, but I don't know of anybody who's tried it and/or succeeded. Unfortunately, you're probably going to have to test that one out for yourself.

The only person who's delved into the CORE.GT4 file enough to know would probably be toolboy. Unfortunately he's not particularly easy to find.

Hey simpsim1 check out this site alright bro http://www.internalreality.com and look for the Elf viewer created by Loser.Once you open up the CORE.GT4 file and let it read,it will access the CORE.GT4 elf file to a certain point then it stops reading once it gets to a certain point, because of the header missing. When it gets to the spot where it stops reading see if you can record the results of the spot where it stop reading.I almost had the spot where it stops reading before, but lost the mark where it stops at.I am trying to find any Elf file viewers, unpackers, repackers anything involved for Elf files at the moment bro.

Phew!!! A day and a half later and I got it FINALLY!

L-Burna, it stops reading at 19784 then goes into error. Hope this is of some use to you because it's totally tired me out!

EDIT: Just thought I'd add screenshot to this. Hope the size doesn't offend anybody. Mods just remove it if it does.

Nice work man,now if I can only extract to where the header stops reading it should be good to go.The rest of the elf file is pretty much garbage, since it doesn't read.Big thanks simpsim1 will work on it real soon.I already joined the two .VOL files also and renamed it to GT4.VOL going in the same direction the GOW tool was made, except going through hex editing like we where doing before ;).

@L-Burna. I'm assuming you've done a straight "A + B" join rather than a concatenation. Just trying to understand what you're doing. I'm also assuming that the files need to be relinked in some way because the elf will be looking for a non-existent GT4L1.VOL. As I've said before, this filesystem is totally strange compared to what I'm used to so I'm totally digging in the dark.

@LiquidusX. Absolutely. This is one project still worth working on, if only just to be able to say "We did it". Never before have I been so determined to finish a project a good six months after first release. I think I need to get out more!!!!

Yep exactly simpson1 an A to B join of the GT4.VOL and GT4L1.VOL renamed to GT4.VOL.I would have gone with the concatenation approach, but the files won't join because they don't equal in size.I am assuming if it is joined then put on a single layer it will read in OTP compared to the original format where the second layer is not getting access, these are all just assumptions though.I was looking back at the GOW tool and the .PAK files where joined together and made into one file, which was named the munge file located on the first layer.I will keep working on it bro,and hopefully something might come up.I have been working on this game a very long time also simpson1,if you read the GT4 thread that was closed I could have gone the HDD approach almost similiar to Toolboy's method.I'm not saying he stold any of the work I was doing, not sure if he still thinks that way or not.I am only saying that was a very good strategy, but just doesn't cut it for Swap Magic users.I never really got that far though, since I am a Swap Magic user like alot of users I am still stumped on trying to figure it out.I can't really say how long I have been working on the game, but it has been off and on mainly because of college to be honest. If we can figure out this game, then this will give us more possibility of backing up newer games that come out with the strange types of munge association Sony is making.Well said simpson1 definately a project that still should be looked at.I honestly can say it hasn't been fully looked at,and the encryption is different than any other game I have looked at also.I am kind of mesmerized by this game, which still hasn't been decrypted to suite everybodies booting methods.Hacking this game is not impossible though, and sooner or later something is going to occur for all boot methods. The elf file is the TOC listing for the munge files, but we might be able to fix this by extracting the elf file to the end of the reading point(still working on this though, might take a couple days).I have a feeling the files that are associated in the elf file are not picking up,because the elf file is browsing the first layer then the second layer. When it tries to access the second layer it fails to read the .VOL file, because it is the same file located on the first layer just renamed. The process they used isn't really different than the GOW game(the way they made the GOW game and GT4 games are similiar to Dual Layer burning, but much more advanced with renaming an so forth),but the actual coding they used is really hard to understand for all the file types in the munge files. If you open up the elf file in a Hex Editor you will see what I mean.It is all a blur to be honest, nothing really visible that anyone can make out as far as I know.

Oh I forgot to mention a difference in language with GOW and GT4 in the TOC files.GOW is mainly in English, but by looking at GT4 I can tell it is coded in a foreign language.I am thinking it is coded in Japanese, some oriental language also.

@L-Burna. Nice work, even though you do keep getting my name wrong (You are forgiven lol). Yeah I've had a look at the CORE.GT4 file with both a hex editor and wordpad as suggested previously and it did look as though there was an element of Japanese in there. This was probably where a bulk of the initial coding was done, which makes sense as the demo versions I've seen were all Japanese (Damn clever guys). To add to this if you watch the split screen of the intro movie on the NTSC version, some of the writing in he lower portion looks decidedly oriental too. So it's quite possible that the Japanese version is embedded in the game as well, with just some code changed to enable it. Curious eh?

I think a good program we could do with would be one that would pick out the differences between two files (IE GT4.VOL and GT4L1.VOL) and list the differences in the Hex code. That would give some insight into how or indeed if files are duplicated across the two VOLs. Any ideas?

Hello, ive been reading the gt4 (took me me a while, thu I just read random pages...) backup discussion, so now ive finally decided to join the forum & maybe contribute something.

Anyways... @simpsim1 you could try to compare them with hex workshop:
Goto [main_menu].Tools->Compare->Compare files...
then choose the "simple compare" (the default option just sucks).

Sorry, but I could only test some small files with this & it seems to work (slow system)

Hope this helps..

@godred. Thanks for advice. I tried Hex Workshop and then went for Winhex instead. Trouble is the comparisons are byte for byte so nothing matches at all. I might try an offset later to see if there are any comparisons elsewhere in the file. I think though, that the GT4.VOL is almost definately encrypted to prevent it from being broken down. Obviously, GT4L1.VOL is not, because we've already been extracting stuff from this.

I have some information that might be of some use, after I joined the two munge files GT4.VOL and GT4L1.VOL files together and made my iso file placing the newly created munge file named GT4.VOL(about 4.7Gig in size)at the end of my ISO file.I came up with some different results opening the image in IsoBuster.I looked at it carefully, since the image is still dual layer at this point it still shows the information in two layers. The ISO structure shows the GT4.VOL as 2.29Gig,and when looking at the UDF structure it also shows the GT4.VOL structure as 2.29Gig.This is the last progress I made so far,and not that long ago I also used the DvdCheck utility from PSSPlex and corrected the checks it picked up on every file from the game(some irx and erx files had checks in them which also could have an affect on the movies).Well each check it found has a 02 extension in them.I found my checks and replaced the 02 values with 01,which should give us the ability to boot past the movies that are ripped out to downsize our images.I still haven't had time to mess with the elf file yet CORE.GT4,but in due time I will advance to working on it.Oh another thing I should mention is I added the toxic patch in for the IOPRP300.img,and also created a ppf patch for it along with the Slus and Core file. The patches are different from what Toolboy used, but could look similiar with one of the files.I am not really sure if one of the patches I made is identicle or not,but I know the IOPRP300 patch I made is from Toxic's patcher and the Slus patch I made is different. The Core file I am still working on at the moment and the patch I made earlier will probably be changed for this file. The main thing now that I need to mess with is the Core file, and I plan on mainly extracting the Core file to where it stops reading the header.Oh and some more information that is also helpfull when I open up the ISO file I made in DvdDecrypter it automatically displays the Dvd-Rom setting,so this is a good sign also.

@L-Burna. I'm not sure if you realised this, but the CORE.GT4 file is actually a compressed ELF (When extracted it's about 5Mb). You can extract it with the "soz.exe" file from Toolboy's kit.

Yep your exactly right simpsim1 that is exactly what I used for the elf file.I uncompressed it with the soz tool that Toolboy used and came up with the exact same thing. The .gz file the tool makes we can delete keep the elf uncompressed instead of compressed alright man, because I scanned the 5MB file with the elfview tool and it reads all the headers all the way through. So I think we should replace the compressed elf with the uncompressed 5MB,and we should get better results. When you compile your ISO file replace the CORE.GT4 with the 5MB file uncompressed we made from the soz tool, and delete the .gz file that was made.

L-Burna. The ELF once patched or whatever you wanna do with it is easily recompressed anyway, but I thought that it might have been why the elfview proggy was fouling up. So basically the CORE.GT4 file is just a gzipped archive of the ELF file with a few bytes changed in the header. How strange that a proprietary corporation such as S*ny should make use of Open Source software like GZip.

So now we've got our ELF extracted, what can we do with it next?

Well,I looked inside the elf file and already seen a spot we can edit for the opening movie, since it seems to freeze at this spot.I am just looking through and trying to figure out the movie spots.I definately found the spot where the opening movie is at though.By editing the spots for the movies the game should get past these locations,as you mentioned earlier the elf file has to be edited also so it doesn't call for certain parts from the munge files.I will keep messing with it and see if I can figure it out.

Excellent stuff L-Burna. It was really frustrating watching the last thread because nobody was prepared to help out on this project. Now we finally have a project specific thread, we at last seem to be making progress.

One other question though. If you use DVD Scan on the core.gt4.elf file, it picks out 21 possible disk checks. Would removing these be an idea?

Yeah bro if dvd scan picks up the checks, let it patch the checks alright man.Inside dvd scan it also has an option to build a .ppf patch file,it isn't hard to make a .ppf file for ppf-o-matic,but if you need help on making a patch for any of the files let me know ok man.I was wrong with the CORE.GT4 being uncompressed I talked to Neness about it to see if it has to be compressed or not,and he said it definately has to be compressed.I wasn't really sure if we could use it uncompressed, but it isn't hard to recompress the elf file.Like you mention man,the checks inside the elf file are what we need to work on.If you need help on compressing the elf let me know ok simpsim1.Sorry I was wrong with the elf file being uncompressed, just wasn't really sure to be honest. So I went and asked Neness which was very helpfull. What we need to do is patch those checks you mentioned, then put it into a .gz file and delete the extension. It looks like a .rar file to be honest the .gz file,so if we can replace the already existing patched .elf file back into the .gz file it should give us success.Yeah bro I think we are making some excellent progress also.I just hope we can actually get a rip image to work with all the ingame features.
