@All. LMAO!! At least you've all got a great sense of humour.

I'm busy doing a bit of debugging right now. I believe I've found the location of the file listing for the VOL files hidden away in the ELF, but it's not really in the sort of format that makes it easy to understand. Might be able to eventually build an extractor though... Just those damn checks to get around.

Other than that, it's the "Same old same old" I'm afraid.

evnflow,

How's it going bro? Nice seeing you this time man. My progress turns out negative so far. Like I said, I'm still new to winhex and all. I'm still trying to learn winhex and how to back up that file I did it 3 weeks ago. I've been busy with work, family and all, plus kinda lazy to work on this "hard @ss GT4".

However, I did tried to rebuild with Sony's CDVDGEN, then I use APACHE 2 to extract both layers, and gnie's IML2ISO to rebuild the IML file also and CDVDGEN_ISOBUILDER by JRLS to rebuild the LST files, then I backed it up with both Nero and DVD Decrypter. I was able to get 95% successfully on DVD Decrypter, but the results came out "negative", it won't even load pass the SONY logo screen at all. Like I told you, there may be a possibility that the Japanese did put some sort of code inside the vol or elf file. It's hard to do this game onto a 100% on a single DVD5 disc. Unless, there's a Japanese programmer, or a genius out there come up with a crack/fix tool, then it will be cracked.

Good luck to Simpsim1 and L-Burna with the progress. I'll keep my eye on you guys.

@Evnflow. Don't worry about hijacking anything man. You're totally welcome to contribute or help in any way possible. In fact, the more bodies we can get, the better.

Here's what I know so far, summed up for those that don't have time to read all the thread and HOPEFULLY in a language everybody can understand.

1. We're looking at either a Rip (Minus a couple of mpegs) or a full version with downsampled mpegs.

2. Mpegs can so far be extracted with either Darthi8nt's VOL extractor or Cube media player.

3. Mpegs can be located in the GT4L1.VOL file (Also known as a munge file), using winhex or Hex Workshop by looking for the first and last lines of the hex value of the mpeg files as extracted. It is this method we are using to remove and/or replace mpegs as necessary.

4. The CORE.GT4 file is actually an ELF file, compressed using GZIP. The soz.exe tool in Toolboy's DVD9-HDD kit will extract it. Once extracted, you'll get two files, "core.gt4.elf" and "core.gt4.elf.gz". The ".gz" one you can delete.

5. We think that the locations of the individual files in the VOLs are buried somewhere in the elf file, but as yet, I've been unable to find them. I thought I did last night, but it turned out to be a red herring. L-Burna thought he'd found a check where the intro movie is but I've yet to hear back from him about this.

6. Toxic's patch is totally useless for a rebuild project, so we've been using the ppf patches in Toolboy's kit. The ELF needs to be recompressed once you have done anything to it using GZIP and the header patched as in toolboy's kit, then renamed back to CORE.GT4.

There are also a few questions that have arisen. For example, if you search for "TMPGEnc" in the VOL files, using a hex editor (It's in the header of all the mpeg files), there are 66 instances in GT4L1.VOL, but not one in the GT4.VOL file at all. I know from experience that if you make a DVD with the first layer only (Which will only contain the GT4.VOL file, not GT4L1.VOL), the game plays the intro movie to about half way before freezing... So there should be a header for it somewhere. My only thoughts on this are that GT4.VOL is either compressed with something or encrypted in some way. I tend to lean towards the latter option because it would require less memory for the PS2 to deal with.

Well all seems to be rather quiet now, so I'm assuming that the topic is slowly dying a death. I myself have been fairly engaged with some other projects for a while, so I'm getting less time to spend on this one. I'll check back once in a while just to see if anyone makes any progress, but failing that, thanx all for the great help you've all given.. L-Burna, Alkohol, Evnflow and everyone else I haven't mentioned. I've come a long way and still have much to learn.....

Well I talked to Neness not that long ago,and he said he would take another look at the GT4L1.VOL file in decrypting it.Sorry for the late reply, but I have been lacking the time also.I am in the same boat as you simpsim1 at the moment bro.Once my semester ends, which is pretty soon I don't lack that much time.I will work on it more, and I am in the middle of helping one of my friends out trying to fix his PS2 dealing with repair issues.I did manage to come up with a maybe solution, remember how I said the beginning intro movie and the ending movie shouldn't be tooken out.I am beginning to think that I could be wrong about these two vids, well we could actually but we would probably have to go back and fix it with hex values tooken from the original file removed. The audio also could be tooken out, probably certain tracks this is just guessing on my part though.I am not certain if this method would be a success or not,but am willing to try it out when I get a chance.

yeah sorry i haven't looked at it either, i've been too busy at work and i've been working on some other projects, and helping with the psp forums...sorry man, i will try to to divert some attention to it, on the intro vids don't they have to be in for the game to launch or at least some of the hex values? i thought that was one of the checks that was in place...i know you can turn them off in the original but they still have there values in place...i could be wrong, and if i am please correct me so i don't look like an idiot, lol ;) and don't let this forum die, we may be busy but it is just a delay not the end... holla ;)

Well the intro can be turned off,if you go into the settings like simpsim1 said it is a check that isn't picking up on the intro at the header probably it is looking for or somewhere in the intro vid.If you rip something out,you have to replace it with at least a small dummy file with some hex values. It is called dummy relinking, but the hardest part is keeping the hex values to where it won't make the dummy file real big.I was thinking maybe the first 4 lines of the top of the vids, and the last three lines on the bottom of the vids hex codes. If you create a dummy file, open it up in a Hex editor and just copy the first four lines of the top and the last three bottom lines. This is all still a guess on my part, but it might work not sure to be honest.I was also thinking of this method also, downsampling the intro vid and then replacing the Hex values from the original file into the downsampled file making sure the hex codes don't erase all the information on the downsampled vid.I also noticed something very strange recently,if you look at the file sizes of some of the vids can't you see some of the vids the exact same sizes.I bet some of these vids are the same, just dupes to make it seem bigger.

Hi guys! I'm not gonna let the thread die if I can help it. It'a a big probability that this will slow down a lot, but I think we'll finally get there. I'm still commited, even though I'm still impatient!!

I'm more puzzled with the GT4.VOL, rather than the GT4L1.VOL to be honest. There are no headers in this that I recognise. In fact, there's nothing at all to suggest that this is a munge file (Even though it most certainly is). I'm sure the key to this lies in the CORE.GT4 file somewhere. I'm still quite inexperienced in hex editing so I may find things out as I learn.

As far as other projects go, one thing I'm working on is a bulletin board, to be used solely as a place for uploading and downloading small files. It's relevance to this topic is that some of the utilities used here could be hosted on this "Board" as well as allowing other people to upload batch scripts or new programs etc. Obviously I'm having to tread carefully to avoid any potential problems such as copyright abuse and security issues, but it's nearing completion. so I'll keep you posted.

I made some very good progress so far, dealing with 3 movies and the audio in the game.I used CubeMediaPlayer to downsample my vids to 25% from the original and extract the .wav files,TMPGEnc to convert to a .m2v file, and PSSPlex to make the .pss munge files for the movies, and am using MFAudio for the music. So far I have saved around this much from just the movies 491MB and will save even more when I am done messing with the music in the game.I don't think it is enough space at the moment for Swap Magic so I am going to continue messing with the audio for right now.I can supply an example real soon of the audio I am about to input back into the game. All I am doing is decreasing the frequency in the audio so right now the frequency of the original audio files are 44100.I am changing the frequency to 24000 at the moment to downsize the audio in the game, and making sure the output is a SS2 file.I'm glad I didn't give up on this, because I think it is possible after looking at it more clearly. Will report back when I finished changing the frequency of all the audio files, and will supply one of the audio files in a minute.

Peace L-Burna

Here is a direct link to one of the audio files I messed with it should be the SS2_2.ss2 file from CubeMediaPlayer http://www.gigashare.com/files/download/2131182744.html .I would supply one of the movies I downsampled, but they are still kind of big in size. The smallest PSS file size I have that I downsampled is 46.6MB in size.

(Note:make sure you use CubeMediaPlayer to play the audio file or MFAudio either one should work)

Peace L-Burna

@L-Burna. I'll mirror that MF Audio program on my site. The forum is kinda raw right now so you can pretty much ignore the rest, but the download speed should be a little faster and all the other utilities I've been using are there too.

Almost forgot. The link is http://simonjc.dyndns.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3

Just a temporary address. I'll update when it changes.

Check the sticky topic "GT4 Burning issues" http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/190104
That one's now closed, but there are two ways so far, a DVD-9 and a partial DVD-5.

Hahaha lol yeah Sonix beat us to it,but still the movies are ripped out when you use the tool.Check it out alright, there is still a check involved dealing with the movies so yeah probably still needs some work on it.Very good progress none the less from Sonix though,if anyone could have made a tool for this game it would have to be one of the rippers from PS2ModsParadise or the great Sonix. They have a very wide knowledge of programming skills,so it was bound to happen ;).I haven't stopped working on it,but I do plan on testing this one technique out I am working on.He took some time off from working on Apache3,can't wait to see that program when it comes out.
