My biggest concern with this software mod (as is the same with hardware mods for both Nintendo Wii and PS3), is the console's ability to self upgrade so easily. New updates come out for the PS3, and all it takes is one update to undermine a mod chip or a software loader. While it appears that a loader CD is soon to come out, has anyone looked at it with the thought pattern of "How could they attempt to foil this plan", and tried making some other tweaks to the loader CD or other mods to in effect make it more difficult to stop? Or are we going to have to just pray that one day we don't have to write code for a back patcher?

With Sony putting Linux on it they would have seen this coming and should have prepared for it.

well this might not be a problem. if you are worried about a firmware upgrade killing our isoloader, you can just stay at a firmware that works with the loader (not using the current one that does not work with it) and use the PS3 firmware check bypass to emulate the current firmware and still get online and the PS3 store. and hopefully new isoloaders will be made for the newer firmwares, though they will not be released as quickly as the firmware upgrades, so you can keep upgrading to those firmwares that still work with the isoloader and use the bypass to still get online and the store. this is just speculation though.

Part of this is a good point. Once this hopefully upcoming iso loader is released, there will be others working on it to improve it. Whenever a new firmware is released there will be hackers constantly working on it to crack it to just be the first. Hackers will never stop. They want to be the first to conquer it, and have their name on it. They get the satisfaction of cracking something that cost a company so much money to create, and then just lose money for their failures. I just can't wait to see the future of this. I got nba street court and it requires 1.50 to play, but I am waiting to see if I can get it working when the loader comes out.
In fact I think we would be fooling our selves if we have a community this large, and did not realize that there are some enemies present.

I thought the online service to play was free.. now they are starting to charge for certain games? That's lame.
While I know there will be constant cracks coming out, people have made lots of money off of the cracks. With the PS2, the loader CD with slide card was selling for $35 or more on many sites. If Sony comes out with a new update to stop this, and someone else comes up with a fix, what's to stop that person from saying "Ok, I now have ISOLoader V.2. that will work around Sony's recent update. That will be $35."? With the PS2, it didn't get updates, so that wasn't a problem. The PS3 does however.
With the constant updates/changes to the system via software, the person who gets the ISO loader will need constant updates for the ISO loader to counteract these changes, and people wanting their cut could potentially cause a decline in the use of things like the ISOLoader. At least with the ISOLoader, you can switch CD's. The real difficult part would be things like the Nintendo Wii's solder on chip, where suddenly a patch makes it not work anymore.. now what? De-solder the chip and buy a new one and solder it on?

why do so many people think it will be a disc?
I think the isoloader will be an application launched from the otheros feature or sumthing similiar to that method.
There wouldn't be an easier method to constantly update the executed program.

Simply because the concept behind the ISO loader for the PS2 was that it used a stamped DVD from a game, and then modified the game data slightly, so that the PS2 recognized it as a game disc. Many of the previous system loaders were fairly similiar in design.

I know right now it's not going to be a disc. It's now confirmed it's not to due with linux. It's either the xmb, or other os. It won't be a disc. Here's some news from ps3news.com
Quote: Tonight while wandering around iRC EFNet #PS3News we bumped into one of the GODS @ PDX for a minute. Since this past week has been a slow PS3 release/news week, here is some info that he shared with us regarding the 'TIFF Exploit' detailed in our Past News. To quote from the previous NFO File:
Quote:
So seeya tiff tiff and bye bye
Based on that, the general consensus at the time was that a PS3 TIFF Exploit was found and being used by the GODS in order to run unsigned code on the PS3. However, after speaking with them tonight we were asked "btw why do all of you focus so much on tiff " and so we replied with the obvious- because of the TIFF TIFF reference above.
To make a short story shorter... we learned from the GODS tonight that the TIFF TIFF reference wasn't intended to be a hint as to the exploit method they were using, but in contrast it being stated "bye bye (as in, no more) TIFF" by those crazy guys!
The next question on most PS3 DEVs minds (according to an informal poll in EFNet #PS3News) was the following: Is the PS3 exploit method PDX is using triggered via Linux, OtherOS, or the XMB?
Although we didn't get a complete answer, the GODS did confirm for us that it is NOT Linux... so now we're down to OtherOS or the XMB for those interested.
Finally, some good news is that College Hoops 2K7, Armored Core 4, Virtua Tennis 3, Godfather: The Don's Edition, Elder Scrolls IV: The Oblivion, Calling All Cars!, and Mortal Kombat II are ALL due out prior to the March 23rd PS3 EUR release... and to quote, PDX assures us of the following: "will put some beter hint in next nfo " so exciting days are definitely ahead for PS3 owners!
In fact I think we would be fooling our selves if we have a community this large, and did not realize that there are some enemies present.

Does anyone know where I can download older firmware versions for PS3?(1.32/1.52) If I can get a download of an older ps3 firmware version, I can post a VERY easy tutorial on how to bypass the PS3's firmware check.

---JUST TESTED IT. DID NOT WORK.---
---I dont know whats wrong here, but my PS3 is updated to 1.32 and the text file and the .pup update are both 1.32 and it tried to install---
---DO NOT TRY---
---One more thing you might be able to install custom firmware or downgrade using this method, but USE AT OWN RISK!!!!!---
Cool, Now what you need is a PC, a router, a PS3 and wires(If wired) to hook it all up.
If you have all of these you need to download ps3proxy english.( http://www.ps3news.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=3673 )
Then, install and go to my computer-Your hard drive-program files-CF3B5-PS3.ProxyServer and open PS3.ProxyServer.GUI.
click what mode you need and type your internal IP.(type ipconfig in the command prompt.) click start.
Now get your ps3 started and go to network settings-Internet connection settings.
options: choose wired/wireless-Custom-Auto-Manual-IP adress choose an IP that is not currently used-EG:192.168.1.10.
Leave subnet mask the same type your routers IP adress.(probably 192.168.1.1) For primary DNS I just choose my computer's IP.
Automatic-(Proxy Settings) use, choose your computer's IP and leave the port number at 8080. Then choose enable for UPnP and confirm.
Test the connection and it will tell you that you need an update. In PS3proxy click the "logs" tab. You should see two adresses. click on the one with the .txt at the end. You should see text. Copy all of the text and past them in a new text file on your PC and save. Now edit the text to match your firmware.EG:# US
Dest=84;ImageVersion=00000deb;SystemSoftwareVersion=1.5400;CDN=http://dus01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/image/us/2007_0228_891bf61f56808119c4968ac3a9101540/PS3UPDAT.PUP;CDN_Timeout=30;
Change the system software version to match yours.
Now download your PS3's firmware from the link mentioned above.
Now go to "replace files" tab in PS3 proxy. Copy the .txt link into the first box and in the seccond box specify where you saved the one you made. And, make another box and paste the last link in the first box. Then in the second box specify where the firmware you downloaded is. EG:You have firmware 1.51. Download firmware 1.51 from the link above and specify where you saved it in the second box.
---By the way if you are able to downgrade(USE AT OWN RISK!, im not responsible for bricking, post it here and don't lie and get other people to try it and brick there PS3.(try to get proof of downgrading via a video on youtube.---

UPDATE: The PS3 downloads the update andwhen it tries to install it says "The latest version of the system software is allready installed. There is no need to update" But, The doors are still open to custom firmware and it may be possible to modify older firmware so the PS3 thinks its installing newer firmware.

It should work, but nobody knows what the hack will be like.
---requirements---
It will have to be a good sized one.(50GB or more)
It will need USB or SATA or a different kind if you have a special cable.
It needs to be readable by a computer.(For transfering the ISO's

There's a USB 500gb external hdd for $170.00 at staples. I picked up a 400gb for $90 awhile ago. I think it will be well worth it for this. Since blu-rays will keep growing in size.

I said 50GB because you could only backup around three Blu-ray games.
You could use a smaller one, but it's not worth it.
If you are using the ps3 firmware it needs to be formatted in FAT.
If you are using Linux you need to format it in EXT3/EXT2.
I just used partion magic.

Hmm I was thinking about updating to 1.50 so I can play NBA street homecourt which I got for free. But I think it's worth the wait, prolly because it will be by passed w/o updating. Playing online with 1.32 was fun while it lasted, and I hope I can do it again!
