Although I dont know if the same holds true for 3.95, I updated straight to 3.71 simply by following the guide. The mem stick prompted me to begin the install - and that was all I needed to do.
Once the install finished I updated using the MUX tool to 3.90, but the PSX games I wanted to run kept crashing. So I just re-flashed to 3.71, used the MUX tool to update to 3.71m33-4, and everything runs great.
The OP's guide is welldone and accurate. Following it should get you where you need to be.

you are NOT suppose to run anything on official firmware. you will always get the "game cannot be started" error.

yes you can use the psp original battery. this process is when you dont need to open it up and solder the pins. the videos are not fake..

Maybe I'm the daft one but you need that step - so go slower when running it (?) Remember to type 'Y' then enter not just enter.

Originally posted by delateur: Hey all, I just got my custom firmware installed, and I wanted to let you know what I did to get it working, just in case going through this guide verbatim isn't cutting it (as it didn't for me).
First off, the part that didn't work for me is similar to what others have stated, which is that it copies the files, but then goes straight to the credits. For those who don't know, this means it did NOT install the custom bootloader properly (in other words, your memstick will not boot and you'll be staring at a blank screen). No amount of swapping of battery or memory stick is going to fix this, if that's the problem you're having.
So now you're probably wondering how to fix it, right? Well, I can help you there, also. The good news is the download you got does contain most of what you need. The only problem you're having is getting the memory stick formatted properly, which will then allow it to accept the custom bootloader, which will install 3.71 M33, and then allow you to do the other upgrades. I could not find a solid consensus on how this should be done, but I'll tell you what I did. I should let you know now, I was using WinXP SP2, and no matter what method of formatting I tried, I could not get the bootloader to work. The only method of formatting that did work for me was using mspformat.exe, which I believe was designed specifically to format a memory stick properly to accept a modified bootloader. So, go ahead and find that program (Google is your friend!), as well as another program called msinst.exe (the bootloader installation executable), and we'll get started.
So here's what you do:
1) Format your memory stick using mspformat.exe
2) Extract all the files from uniunbr.rar to your memory stick, and also copy the ADD_ON contents to the memory stick - these are all the files you will need to install your custom firmware.
3) Copy msinst.exe and msipl.bin (located on the memory stick in the root directory) to an easy location (c:/ would work, for instance)
4) Up to this point, I'm assuming you have the PSP connected to the PC in USB mode, so go ahead and quit out of that mode, or unplug the USB cable.
5) Open a command window and get to the directory those two files are located and type: "msinst msipl.bin" (no quotes, just as I typed it, and don't get confused and think you need to put a drive letter in there, you don't!) and hit Enter
6) It will now wait for you to reconnect your PSP (Saying "Connect target MsProDuo" on the very last line), so go ahead and put it back into USB mode or reconnect the USB cable.
7) The expected text will be displayed (that was skipped on your installation before), so hit Y and the memory stick will be set up as a Pandora memory stick (meaning it will boot when you put a Pandora battery in).
8) Now you can follow the rest of the guide as stated, hitting X to install the custom firmware at the menu that shows up, etc.
Note: This method SHOULD work with any version of Windows, because of the use of the custom formatting tool, and because the custom installer is not used.
Hope that helps anyone else keep from going through the frustration I did trying to figure out what was going wrong.
Edit: Wording changes for clarity
hey delateur im trying your method because im failing else where, ive got up to putting the command in but when i put msinst msipl.bin in i get a message saying msinst is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file, ive put them in my c drive btw, what am i doing wrong please help

I'm not sure how much DOS experience you have... Are you running the exe from the "c:\" drive directory. If you are in another "folder" you aren't in the right area to open the file. Also, you could try typing in the full file name "msinst.exe" Although that shouldn't be necessary. Hopefully you are using the Command Promt and not the Run Command.

One other suggestion - turn off your anti virus and firewall (disconnect from the internet 1st) then try. Some have had problems w/ their anti virus and I had Comodo firewall screw it up.

i have followed all the instructions on this thread, and have a tool battery... but its not working - i have the problem where the green power light comes on, but nothing comes up on the screen at all, no matter whether i put the battery, or the memory stick in first. i am using a 4gb official sony memory stick, is this almost certainly the problem or is there anything else i can try before buying ANOTHER memory stick? are there any other files i could download instead that would be more likely to get it running on my current 4gb memory stick? such as http://dl.qj.net/TOTALNewbi-easyInstalle...14749/catid/193 that was just linked above? if i need to buy a new memory card, then does it have to at least be 512mb, as obviously a 256mb one would be cheaper if this is all that i'm going to use it for? thanks in advance...

now trying to follow delateur's post - have downloaded mspformat & msinst - but how exactly do you "format the memory card with mspformat" ? - when i click on the downloaded mspformat.exe file it very briefly opens up an extraction-type window, then closes almost instantly, seemingly without really doing anything at all

i just cannot get it working, tried various methods now. when following delateurs advice as soon as i got to no.3 there was no "msinst" on my psp root. so i copied 2 from the download - one onto my psp root and one into drive c:\ but when i then entered the listed commands in DOS it didn't work... i'm not sure that mspformat is working correctly but basically i think my memory stick is not formatting correctly because ultimately the when i run the "start" program as instructed at the very start of this message it never quite goes quite as listed. at 1st it was missing a whole chunk off the end - but having manually formatted the memory card manually through control panel/performance and maintenance/adminstrive tools/ as instructed on another forum here, i seemed to get further with the installion (with what came up closer to what was listed on the start of this thread) only with the very end being slightly different. someone please help!!!
