I wouldn?t be shocked if there isn?t. Again, I think I said this on a different board. I think that nintendo?s copy protection on this game is the dual layer itself. They probably figured that no one has dumped a dual layer yet so they will have problems with that. And it might not work still due to putting the region coding on the second layer. A few chips have gone out of their way to include dual layer support. D2Ckey and Cyclo, no shock they are the two that can play it.

i dont know much about how the chips work, but will it be possible to update a wiikey chip to read dual-layer discs or is that something that is coded into chips like the cyclowiz chip?

Im surprized there hasnt been much discussion on the actual ripping process involved with the disk... Is it even rippable at this time? And if so good lord someoen should get on that to be hero of the nation.

Since every single Wii Mod out there is in some way flashable and some DO read the dual layer disk there is no reason why the WiiKey couldn?t be updated to do so. Only thing that could possibly stop it is if the flash rom is too small for the update.

That seems to be the major hurdle, the ripping. From the sound of it the ripping program also doesn?t read the second layer making it not possible at this time. We will see. Since I?m new to this whole scene I?m not used to Day 1 releases. I know that usually isn?t that common in other circles, so I wasn?t expecting anything for a few days on Smash. Either way, even if it pads out to my expectation of a 1 week time for compatibility that still makes it almost 3-4 weeks early over what I would have waited. =}

I have heard from multiple people that the DL support only is for the gamecube mode in order to enable large multi-game disks. Not for DL wii games.

Just incase some of you guys aren't aware of the update at www.wiinewz.com
------------------------

Rumors are rampant on various forums, including 2ch and GBATemp that "Super Smash Brothers Brawl" is not working with Wiikey.

Some have speculated that it is the Wiikey's lack of Dual-Layer support that could be causing the issue. We have contacted the Wiikey team and informed them of these recent rumors and should have a response in the next couple of days. Rest assured that makers of ALL modchips will be working hard to make sure that this game is fully compatible with their chips. There is no need for pages and pages of posts with idle speculation.

The latest information from a well-known torrent site is as follows. All tests were done with the original game as no backups have been made or tested yet...

Quote:
NTSC-J WiiKey, all firmwares: Does not work, dozens and dozens of sources
NTSC-U WiiKey, all firmwares: Does not work, one source
NTSC-J D2Ckey: Works, multiple sources
NSTC-U D2Ckey: Works, one source
NTSC-U CycloWiz: Works, one source
NTSC-J Yaosm: Works, few sources

Thanks to M37R01D for the information.

But it sounds the data on the 2nd layer is not completed. When he plays the single mode of sub-space advanture, wii reports error.

Anyway, this is a good news

Well nothing is going to stop people speculating until the answer appears. =} I read that yesterday too on a few sites. Still doesn't answer the ripping question.

I also love how no one seems to have tried that swap method listed earlier on and either confirmed or denied it.

I know, I haven?t seen this before since I wasn?t in the SMG crazy I hear about. But It just feels odd being one of the few people that if I get ANY SSBB early ill be a happy camper. And with over a month of Early left I?m being patient. I want it sure, but im not losing my mind. I was freaking happy that last night I was able to finally play Shikigami No Shiro 3 and Naruto EX 2 as well as load up old Soul Calibur 2 for some 2 player with my g/f. (Which I promptly lost horribly. She still has the touch.) I?m sure that someone will make an update for it that will make it work. It obviously works on other chips than the WiiKey, so its only a matter of time. If not, that?s why I had the forethought to do my WiiKey as an external mod. Just wired a D-Sub Port, bought a little plastic case and turned my WiiKey into a kind of thumb drive. If it never works with SSBB ill just unplug it for brawl. =}

That is also a problem as the game so far is pretty scarce unless you pay stupid prices on ebay for one. People in japan can?t get it very easily and its officially released there!

I say sit tight and wait. =} Its been less then 24 hours since the official release.

WiiNewz contacted the Wiikey Team in regards to compatibility issues with "Super Smash Brothers Brawl." Here are their exclusive comments...

It has just been made aware to us that SSB does not work with wiikey.
We are looking into it and are also working on a dual layer disc
dumper, so that any update hopefully will be compatible with a backup
of the game.
good news about dumper also

Just to clarify, once the game has been ripped with a DL dumper, and the iso is available, will the game then need to be burned on a DL DVD? Or can I just use a regular DVD like I've been doing for the other games? Thanks.

I think the reason alot of US/Canada residents are so anxious is because the weekend is upon us, if we could start a SSBB download today we'd have it in time for the weekend. Which would be nice, but at this point im thinking next weekend looks more probable.

You will almost certenly need a DL DVD to burn it. I say almost because I know with PS2 games it was possable to 'shrink and flatten' the image by removing cutscenes and filler data and then reformatting it to a single layer. However this only worked on some games and was a totally different platform so I seriously doubt it'll work on this game.
