Great guide! backups run flawlessly :) just one thing...My old disc channel now shows the message "Wii System Update" is it safe to run this? I use the Backup Launcher but I'm thinking it's just a matter of time before one of the kids clicks the old icon!

I ran into that no vulnerable IOS found error too. Turns out it doesn't like it if CIOSCorp is installed. So if you do the downgrade to 3.2 (from my understanding) or if you can find the official versions of all of your IOS's (I believe that an official IOS32 works for bootmii), then bootmii should install.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks and have a nice day

What would be a reason I am getting "Unable to read disc" with all burned isos via the Disc Channel?

--followed all guide steps and softmod guide steps. All went as expected (i.e., results were what it said would occur in guide, absolutely no error messages or unexpected results. Wii serial # is well below the danger range.)
--burning on store-bought DVD-R and DVD+R media (neither work)
--burning at 4x via IMGBURN and Nero

What could I be overlooking? Should I be booting up the system in a certain way? I am just turning it on and going to the Disc Channel. Do the isos need to be patched? Does my SD card with various apps need to be present, not present? Could someone tell me a specifically reliable game to test with?

Are the instructions in the main softmod and USB Loader GX guide incompatible with each other or with this one? I couldn't get the USB method to work either, so I followed this guide instead. Could I have ended up with incompatible versions of something? How can I tell my current CIOS version?

Thanks in advance--I am used to having pretty easy success with guides as clearly written as this and I'm getting hugely frustrated. :\

EDIT: Resolved. Leaving this for posterity--the obvious thing I was overlooking was that the SD card with various apps could not be in the system when loading the discs. This became apparent when even my original game discs wouldn't load.

Thanks darrellcf.. can you please give me some more info as to where I should be looking for the questions?

I could clearly find the Are you sure question (the first one).

Kindly Note: I am able to play copied games even without completing all the steps (through Backup Loader).

Thanks, Chin2

im having trouble getting anything to work. i extract all the files from the download to the root of my sd card, copy the hacks filed from the sd root in the folder and place it in the root of the sd and rename it to hacks. i run homebrew and it doesnt see it, it sees the apps folder.

i did all the steps in the first guide for the 4.0 updates but thats as far as i have gotton now.

also i want to backup my nand but the linked tutorial doesnt show how to save it only install. i cannot move any thing with the wii controler, i do not have a gamecube controler if thats needed.

A gamecube controller is recommended, but not required. The other method is to use the bottons on the wii. You can use the reset button as "ok", the eject button as "right" and the power button as "left".
As for the hacks thing... where did you copy it to and what is in this folder? I am not sure i know which folder you are referring to.

Thanks and have a nice day

i extracted the DiscChannelSoftmod folder to the root of my sd card /f (is the card readers location on the laptop) i than navigated to the root file loction in the DiscChannelSoftmod folder to find the hacks file i need to rename, i copy that file to the root of my sd card (/f) and rename to hacks (as extentions are hidden so i dont need the .ini added)

i pop the card into the wii and open up home brew but it doesnt find anything but the apps folder and wad manager.

That is normal operation. The homebrew channel reads from the apps folder (SD:/apps is how the wii sees it I believe). What is it you are trying to do? The homebrew channel will only read what is in the apps folder. The hacks.ini file is used for the preloader (press and hold reset as you power on the wii if preloader is installed). Otherwise just follow the tutorial through.
If it says to use homebrew channel (often abbreviated as HBC), then start up the homebrew channel. I believe that everything should be able to be run from there (all of the .dol or .elf files anyways). The files need to be in seperate folders and be named either boot.dol or boot.elf, but you say you just extracted the files so you shouldn't need to rename anything.
Which part are you getting stuck on? I followed this tutorial on the weekend and it went rather smoothly.

I am actually having the exact same issue. Which version is your wii? I am wondering if maybe it has something to do with which wii you have and what version of system menu you have. Considering you are posting in a 4.0 firmware thread, I am assuming it is 4.0. But where does yours sit with the LU##? I will post mine later to verify some things.
Also, which custom software do you all have installed? Homebrew channel for sure, but do you have any WADS installed from WAD manager (ie pirated, but I don't want to get into trouble for discussing such things), DVDX, bootmii beta 2, preloader .29, softmii 2.1.1? I have all of those on mine plus a few more... I will post it later today (not near my wii right now).

Ok. To verify I have the following installed:
softmii 2.1.1
bootmii beta 2
preloader .29
NeoGamma R4 (using IOS249 Rev 13)
Homebrew Channel 1.0.3
Wii DVD Dumper
DVDX
and a few WADS running on a LU55 Wii.
Going to try updating to a newer cios (CIOS38 rev 13b) and the results are.... it works :) Try grabbing cIOS38 rev 13b and give that a shot and post back if it works for you.

First off thank you larry and everyone that has helped others in thread! I've just successfully completed soft modding my wii and this guide. Sorry to be such a noob but what does this mean? Can I play backups now or do I have to get some kind of loader, what should I not do now that could brick my wii, I have backuped the nand with Bootmii after this guide so I think I'm safe now yes? I just don't to do anything stupid. And lastly what is IOS and CIOS and the differences. Any help is appreciated thanks everyone.

I think I bricked my wii, I followed the guide

from upgrading to 4.0, got to the install cioscorp bit, forgot to do that and in stalled the ios60 by accident so I uninstalled it after I installed it via wadmanger, reseted my wii by pressing home so I can do the step I missed and then it froze, I switched it off and now it doesn't turn on only blank screen :/

can I fix this?

PS2 Slimline + Swap Magic + Fan
PS3 60gb Version 1.90
PSP 3.52 M33 EUR Black Version + Logitech Hard Case + Logitech 3 Sound Speakers + 2gb Sony Memory Stick
Nintendo Wii + 3 Wii&Nunchuck Controllers

It all depends. Did you get the preloader installed? Or bootmii? If you have bootmii installed and backed up your nand, you should be able to. If you have preloader installed you should be able to hold reset as you power it on and start up the homebrew channel. Otherwise you will need to talk to a more experienced Wii hacker than I.

I seem to be having a problem with preloader. The first time I tried to do this hack, I got all the way to the install hacks.ini part and then I had a problem with that after trying multiple different methods so I gave up.

Everytime I turned on the wii though, I had the preloader menu coming up so I changed the settings so that it would automatically load to the original wii screen (health, safety, press A) everytime I would turn on the wii.

Yesterday I decided I wanted to retry these steps and see if I could get it to work this time. Everything is fine until after I install preloader. Once I install it, the wii just reboots to the health, safety screen and I have no idea how to get to the preloader menu again. How do I get to the preloader menu?

Gh0ce, just an FYI, if you install Bootmii as an IOS you can't back up your NAND without a GC controller, the reset/power button control doesn't work in this case. You can access bootmii fine, just not do anything once it's open.
(I asked Larry to update this and the SDHC Preloader issue but apparently he's gone MIA on us)

Oh... good to know... I guess I never tested that as I installed it as a boot2 and an IOS, but I couldn't get the IOS one to work after updating to 4.0... probably gotta reinstall it... may try to do that tonight.

Side note: has anyone tried system menu 4.1 with loading backups and homebrew?

Thanks and have a nice day

jeez, that was an easy fix... thank you

I followed the steps and used a low capacity sd card and it all works!!!

I had copied a zelda twilight princess game onto a dvd and it showed up in the disk channel. I can see the animation and everything.

When I click start, it starts the game and goes to the white warning screen with the picture of the wii remote that all the games show.

After this though, it shows a black screen saying that it is unable to read the disk and to consult the wii manual.

I used a fujifilm dvd-r and copied at 4x speed (yes, as an image and not as data). What could have gone wrong? Is it just a bad dvd or is there another step I need to do before running the disk?

Oh, I also used wii brick blocker before burning the disk.

EDIT: Again simple fix. Just took out the sd card and everything works. Amazing!!!

Alright I'm getting tired of this problem...

I keep getting that "this disk is not able to be read" error.

At first I always had this problem, but then I took out the sd card and I was able to play the game. I went out, turned off the wii, and now I'm not able to play the game anymore because "the disk it not able to be read" again.

I know the game works because it always shows up in the disk channel and I was able to play it once. Also, the warning screen with the wii remote always pops up, but right after that I get the error message. The sd card is still out.

Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks

Which version of the cIOS do you have installed? I was having issues with ghostbusters crashing at the warning screen but solved the problem by updating. Or if that doesn't work, try using version 13 instead of 13b... Do you have other games that do work? Is it just 1 game that gives this error? Do you have a cleaning disk? Your lens may be dirty. I ran the official nintendo wii cleaning disk through my system and was surprised at how much dirt and crap that came out.
my 2 cents anyways... good luck and post your results.

Thanks for the advice. I do not have a cleaning disk at the moment but I will see if I can get one and see what happens with that.

I currently only have this one backup game (zelda: TP) because I haven't had time to make any other ones. But like I said. I know it works because I was playing it before.

Maybe the actual problem is the lens because I just got the game to work after ejecting and reinserting the game countless times until the wii finally read the dang disk. But I don't want to do that all the time. So I'll try the lens cleaning.

Anyways, I followed the exact steps from this thread to install everything. Would I have to update the cIOS as you mentioned in the fix to your problem and also do the 13 instead of 13b? If so how do I do that?
