You should be using DVD-R media for best results.

If you try to use DVD+R media try book typing it to DVD-ROM for better compatibility.

Great guide it was easy to follow, I've installed everything listed. The problem I'm having is my my back-up iso copy of supper mario galaxy isn't working from the disc channel, unable to read disc. I made three copies, burning at full speed, then 2x speed. I also have a back up of wii play and used wbfs to put it on my flash drive and the screen goes blank. For mario I'm using dvd+r. I just used back up loader and it said error 972. Any solutions?

First thoughts: try a DVD-R instead of a +R. Second, the iso may be corrupt. Try re-creating the iso from your original disk. As for loading stuff off of USB, I haven't tried doing that yet, so I am not much help. Have you tried installing a different cIOS38 13b? I heard a few people had issues with 13b, but I had no problems with it. Worked for all the games I tried. Also, some people were having problems if they left their SD cards in the slot. Again, not a problem I have had, but it could be that. I have had issues with DVD+R disks, but the only times i had problems with DVD-R were when I was burning it at 16x. 4x seems to keep the wii and mii happy.
My 2 cents. Let me know your results.

Thanks for the guide,

I have got stuck somewhere in the process and I am frightened of briking the Wii.

I have the home brew channel loaded and ad I am on VER 4.0.

I am asking this, Do all the steps in the guide have to be done in order. ( I actually missed out the ios downgrader and the any region changer did not continue due to not have Korean Language support.

I got as far asloading the preloader and selecting the menu settings, somehow the Wii rebooted and now when I goto the preloader on the HBC it starts and then resets the Wii.

Do i have to continue and complete the guide or do I nedd to unistall some features and start again

if u read like the 5 posts before yours, we confirmed that DVD-R's are apparently more compatible. larrylje says there are some DVD+Rs that work, but not too sure which ones. Try DVD-Rs, Memorex worked for me at 16x speed.

I'm gonna have to buy some more dvd-r's, I snagged a couple from work. Burned with image burn 2x speed and burn process ok, but verifying and checking process error, error, and more errors. I'm gonna try with nero and look for book mode, thanks. Got it with nero at 4x speed, dvd-r, hopefully it was just the speed and the dvd's and maybe image burn. Thanks, jp

Sorry, been away from the scene for a year.
I don't understand: Do backup discs not run from the disc channel anymore?

I've still got the simple wiikey 1.9g so I still run everything from a disc and it shows up just as any original disc does. Does the latest firmwares change all of this??

Would be good to have a quick explanation from basics!! I'm a newbie again haha
Thanks so much!

This is a softmod guide. Not a guide for Modchips.

Yes I know, but I didnt need support for modchips.

I just wanted to know briefly why one would need these steps to launch games from the disc channel. Since they used to run on the disc channel when you place a disc in, why don't they do so now on the latest firmwares?

so im having MAJOR issues

i've tried 3 cards:
2GB KingMAX miniSD with adapter
2GB Kingston microSD with adapter
1GB Crucial SD

NONE HAVE WORKED
i've done the renaming on all of them, and with the original names and it wont fuckin work.

with the .ini on the end, i get the message telling me
Hacks for your systemmenu version (v289) were found no

thats all i can read, not sure if its stupid grammar, or if it gets cut off.
i'm on a NTSC wii, with the NTSC file, i have downloaded it 3 times to keep trying to use it and it won't work.

what can i do? PS: the 2GB microSD says SDC on it but not SDHC.
the others say nothing of the sort

THIS IS FOR SOFTMODDING!

There are 2 ways to mod your system now.

Softmod and hardmod. This is for Softmod users that want to boot from disc channel rather then booting from a backup launcher.

wow..idn what's even happened now.
i saw elsewhere that i should change the version info in my hacks file to suit the v289...so where it said version=417 i changed all those to 289

it worked smoothly, and i continued to follow the guide

and when i got to the part that said the system would be corrupt or w/e, it never happened..but i can launch games from the wii disc channel now?

but when i go into settings, it says i'm back on version 3.2U
and i kinda want 4.0 so i can launch wads thru my SD card. i originally only upgraded for the disc channel launching.

any idea what i should do now?
start over?

Hi guys, really sorry but kinda a noob to this but i know my way around stuff.

Anyway i have followed both of Larrys guide and i have got the homebrew channel installed etc.

I have a back up of a game but it wont launch, if i go to the disc channel menu it says 'unable to read disc' and if i use neogamma it times out and doesnt load.

Everything installed fine with no problems. Is it possible that i have burnt my back up wrong or is it a dodgy back up or do i need to do something else?

In addition when i burnt the disc it was fine.

Thanks for your help guys, keep up the good work.

It could be several things:
1) are you using DVD+R or DVD-R or (heaven forbid) RW's? I have had very hit and miss luck with RW disks (found 1 out of a pack of 5 that did work, but it was very flaky).
2) what speed are you burning it at? I found that 4x seemed to work best for me.
3) some people reported having issues with having an SD card in the slot. Try removing it.
4) your game may not be supported/bad image made. Try re-making the image from the original.
5) which cIOS did you install?
Some/all of the above could be your issues. Please post back with the information.

Just wanted to give a heads up.

I have updated the guide for 4.1 firmware.

Those that followed the guide previously on 4.0 firmware can start at STEP 3 of the guide to update to 4.1 with all options still available that 4.0 firmware had.

The dvd's i am using are DVD-R's not tried burning at a slower speed but not sure how it would help as i have got burnproff on or would that not help? It was burnt at maximum which is 16x for the disk and i havent had any problems with anything else i have put on these disks if that makes any difference? I am also using nero to burn the ISO.

I have tried with no SD card in and that didnt make any difference, i got the same results as when i had it in.

The guide says start at step 3 not do step 3. So yes start at step 3 and onward and it should work.

I am not certain a slower speed would help you then. When I had speed issues, ejecting then reinserting the game would make it work (usually). I am wondering if the game may be incompatible or if you possibly missed a step in this guide. Also, does your wii serial number start with L64 or L65? What you could try is reinstall cIOSCorp and see if that makes a difference. From my understanding cIOSCorp is what is used for loading backups.
and this may sound like a dumb question, but are you sure your backup is of a wii game? And that your backup was created successfully? Do you have a friend with a hacked wii that you could test the game on? It could be an incompatible game possibly. Try backing up wii sports and see if that backup works and go from there (if you are certain that you followed all of the steps correctly).

Well i play all my games via disc channel, in the install process of 3.2menu it installs a hack menu to tweak menu.. i.e. region free sd menu, no health warning etc etc

Follow the guide starting at STEP 3 (you can also skip step 3 since you are already at 4.1 firmware) but do the rest of the steps after step 3.

Just a little update on my situation. I have borrowed a backed up game from a friend and it works fine. I have also tried another iso twice on a fast speed and a slower speed but nothing happens well correction on that the second time on the slower speed it read the disk but an error came up but couldnt see it over ng.
