Hey Larry, great guide. Worked perfectly for me, well for NTSC games anyways. I have a few PAL discs, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get NeoGamma to force NTSC. I've gone into options and tried all of the different settings, but there isn't a specific Force NTSC option. I also have another question. Do I have to hook my Gamecube controller up everytime I turn the Wii on to get past the setup screen? Everytime I turn my Wii on, I'm taken to the screen where you go to Settings using the GC Controller to do the NAND backup. I've just been pressing reset on the console and it boots into the Home screen at that point, but it's kind of annoying.
Thanks again for the great guide, and I hope to get a reply from you.

Try starting the guide from DOWNGRADE IOS15 to AnyTitleDleeter. Make sure do not get any error messages. (Except for AnyTitleDeleter which will give you errors).
will try again tommorow brains fried now
thanks for the quick reply

The setting is force NTSC 480 something like that (not all games are region compatible).

If you want the bootmii menu to stop loading drag the Bootmii folder from the SD Card root to your PC. Once you back it up on your PC you can delete it off the SD Card. If you ever need to recover from a brick just drag the Bootmii folder back to the SD card to boot into Bootmii menu.

Your doing something wrong. As to what I can not tell you because I don't know what your doing. If you follow the guide from start to finish not missing a step it should work.

Ok I was able to get the files download to SD now to the WII but there is some conflicts for me in the guide that I want to iron out;

Says SAFE TO DOWNGRADE IOS;
IT IS SAFE TO DOWNGRADE IOS15 ON ALL SYSTEMS/SERIALS!
DOWNGRADE IOS15:

Also says DO NOT DOWNGRADE ANY IOS;
DOP-IOS MOD:

I would suggest using DOP-IOS to install and patch newest version of the below IOS.

ALL SYSTEMS/SERIAL # CAN USE DOP-IOS. THOSE WITH LU64, LEH250 OR LAH113 AND ABOVE CAN USE THIS APPLICATION. DO NOT DOWNGRADE ANY IOS OR FIRMWARE. INSTALL & PATCH THE LATEST IOS REVISION AVAILABLE INSTEAD OF DOWNGRADING TO A LOWER REVISION. DOWNGRADING TO A LOWER REVISION MAY BRICK YOUR SYSTEM!

Please clarify, thanks

Is a Gamecube controller needed? My wii is currently in transit and I don't have any GC stuff. Thanks.

I don't know how to make it more clear.

You can downgrade IOS15 on all Systems/Serials in the DOWNGRADE IOS15 section of the guide (which the guide already states).

When using DOP-IOS if you have a LU64, LEH250 OR LAH113 AND ABOVE system then install the latest revision avaiable. Do not downgrade to a lower IOS revision.

It is a warning for those that have those serial# systems. Downgrading some of the IOS can cause your system to brick. So it is best to avoid downgrade any IOS when using DOP-IOS.

Great job!!!

Upgraded my nephew's console from 3.3u to 4.2, then followed your guide to the letter. (except since I just upgraded I bypassed the DOP-IOS MOD part) and he is currently playing to his hearts content!

Thanks!

To other noobs like myself...read, read, read and if you get stuck go back and read, read, read some more. And when you are finally benefiting from someone else's skill and hard work don't forget to say:

Thank You!!!

I'm going to buy a wii tomorrow but i am afraid my new wii wont be able to load backup discs. Is there anyway to tell (before i buy the console) if it will be able to run backup games?
Has anyone been able to get backups to run on new consoles?

Ok, so the DOP-IOS is a different IOS type then the IOS15.
That's all I need to know. Thanks

I was lucky. The wii i got for xmas was fine. Even if it blocks disks you could still load of a HDD or Flash Drive. So no worries. Im waiting on ordering a sweet 160gb external just for that purpose.

Thank you so much larrylje .. this worked perfectly for me once again .. I did a 4.1 and then today .. a 4.2 ..

For all of you folks that can not simply read the tut .. print it out and have someone that can read it to you .. he can not be any more explicit on his tutorial .. step by step .. if you miss something, then you could brick your Wii ..

larrylje - once again, Thank you !

Hi guys ! I just joined cause i have a problem with the 4.2 softmod.
i have a new console (LU70) updated to 4.2U. I did the SD card prep as described in the tut, all files and folders are there . I put the card in the console , then click the SD card icon , and click yes to ;"Load Boot dol/elf?". Then the screen goes blank and the drive starts to flash and the console Freezes ! i have to unplug it to use it again .
Also the apps folder is empty after this happens . You should also know that the homebrew channel is already installed from another site.(before i found you guy). theirs dont finish the install. I can't backup my nand.

hey larrylje,

first i want to say thanks for your hard work. i have done a couple of wiis and followed your 4.1 softmod and that worked great. i updated my wii to 4.2 since i want to use usb loader. anyways, here is the problem i'm having with the 4.2 guide.
everything up to installing cios38_rev14 goes by smoothly with no errors. when i try to install hermes 222/223 it usually just freezes on downloading ios38 metadata:...from internet: initializing network. a couple of times i have gotten the failed message but i wasn't able to write down the error that it gave me. the last part that i did remember after the failed message was No such file or directory i've re-downloaded the files a couple of times. downloaded the nus wads. started from the beginning of the guide a couple of times. still can't install hermes. i installed cios38_rev14 by wad first then by network and both ways it was successful. i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. is there another way to install hermes? if i still can't install it will i be able to do the rest of the guide and then i guess i have to settle for cioscorp. thanks for your help.
by the way i'm using Windows 7 64bit Home Premium if that helps any. again thx!

I completed the install on my 4.2 Wii with no problems. I didn't do a NAND backup. Is there way I can still do a NAND backup?

Thanks

ok i got up early to get this little sucker done

ok i have again followed your tutorial word for word
following the trucha bug restorer part line by line and everything goes fine.
my problem is with anytitle deleter, i load it up in hbc and get the message about being the daddy followed by a couple of errors (informing wii that i am its daddy...error!ES_identity (ret = -1017)
error! ES_opencontent (ret = -1017)
i press A which shows the message Region detection failure! 0
followed by confirm region: 2
i press A choose system titles
i get the error message cant get count of titles ret = -1

this is where im stuck

i have even restored my nand backup and started again but fails in the same place every time.

any help appreciated

I read somewhere in this thread a question asked how to return the softmodded Wii to being "unmodded" as it were.

I presume that if you've done a backup of your nand then you can restore it using Bootmii, to how it was when you backed it up eg pre modding with just HBC/Bootmii installed.

However i've been readin around various forums and sites and for those of us who installed Bootmii as IOS (i didn't even get an option to install as boot2) we can't restore our NAND if we brick our Wii's unless we've got an application called Priiloader installed aswell.
Priiloader apparently allows you to boot to the HBC in the event of a brick, from where you can launch Bootmii and restore.

Do you guys think its worth us installing Priiloader aswell then on our systems as a precuationary measure in the sad case of a brick?

In my previous install of the homebrew channel , there was no bootmii install . So it isn't installed .

First i would like to say HI :) and thx for a great forum :)

i am following the guide here but i seem to have a problem here
Launch the HBC and load the cIOS 222 installer.
Select IOS249 to perform the install
This time select Custom IOS 223 and select IOS38 merged with IOS60.
Make sure you get installation complete. If you do not and get an error then rerun this step again.

i only have the options as follows
USE IOS 38
USE IOS 38 MERGED WITH IOS37
USE IOS 38 MERGED WITH IOS68

Can i just start again? or do i run the risk of bricking my wii?

any ideas??? thx in advance

I would like to thank Larry for this fine guide. Writing how-to's is not fun and it takes a lot of work, most of which isn't thanked.

I had a 4.2 system that I modded without incident and it's playing games like a champ. I haven't got it to play PAL games yet, but I see in the thread, some options to try and I'm not going to bother anyone with what is most likely my failure to adjust the loader.

All I know is that I was able to play a backup NTSC discs and I couldn't be happier!

Thanks again Larry for the hard work, the long hours and all your follow up on the board. You're a good egg!

It's better to have something to regret than nothing to remember.

Just like to say thank you very much for a very clear and concise tutorial. I just upgraded my virgin 3.1 to a 4.2 softmod. Very happy indeed with results.
