Yeah if you're using CMC Mag crap media, that's the problem. Get some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. You can find Verb's at Sam's Club, a 50 pack for $15. You can get Maxell's at Office Depot or Compusa that are made in Japan and excellent quality. Make sure it says "Made in Japan" on the label. The Sony DVD+R's made in Japan are Taiyo Yuden's. Again the "Made in Japan" on the label is the key. Or you could order TY's or Verb's off http://www.supermediastore.com

Is your firmware up to date?

92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatiblility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

I burnt resident evil 4 fine with updated burner firmware with dvd decrypter with TYG02 and it works perfect, all videos and everything.. Maybe verbatim isnt good enough for the game?

Or your ps2 could be slowly dying because of all the crap media that has been used on it.

PS2 SlimLine v14.
PS1 Backups without Breaker Pro .
ActionReplay Max Swap Magic Version .
^^ FTP'ed latest Code List from codejunkies.com to my PS2 memory card .
50+ PS2 Games .
100+ PS1 Games .
50 Pack of Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R's .

That's why I say TY is a notch above Verb's. I've come across a lot more posts where Verb's caused people problems than TY's. I'm bored with TY lol. 120+ burns on TYG02 and 0 coasters. I need some excitement lol. Glad you got it RE4 working. The visuals are quite impressive.

Even if it's new, your firmware is probably not up to date. Furious could PM you that info, but he can't provide a direct link to pirated material, it's against forum rules. I think it's something awry in the media process, not the game itself. You need to update your firmware, and if that doesn't work, try rebuilding.

92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.

10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip. Another purpose of rebuilding is to make games run smoother. Usually the size of the game after rebuilding is smaller, but not always. If you're a Swap Magic user, make sure to look out for dummy files when rebuilding.

11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949
With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515
With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT From Paddymail:

Here's how to use it.. it might not work for all games though.

Open the program.

1. Select the Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins drop down list.
2. Select the iso you want to rebuild.
3. Click extract LBA.
4. Click extract file and wait for it to finish.
5. Click rebuild file and wait for it to finish.
6. Click rebuild LBA.
7. Burn the new iso with Nero or DVD Decrypter as usual.

This may agitate some of the expirenced folk in this forum, but I did actually read the the first 3 forums and this question came to mind. If this question is retarded or my investigation into the topic isn't sufficient then don't waste the key strokes. And I'll assume hence.

I read that the obvious Memorex(Memosux)disks are horrible on the lense due to the cheap dye's used. And was bummed cuz I got a 50 stack ($16 on an instant rebate at staples.) I did this prior to knowing any differences DVD's let alone dye's ect...
Then about page 3 I read that if you have a quality burn even Memorex's were ok. There wasn't much of a reply to this lengthy post, so here I am.

I'v burned 5 or so games that work smoothly and quick, without much noise out of my PS2, however even if regardless of the quality of the burn, the memorex's will destroy my PS2's laser I will discontinue use of them immeditly and get myself some TYG02.

So my question is will, regardless of the quality of the burn, my laser get destroyed at the rate which Tokijin described in his super Q & A, due to dye quality?

Well I'll be the first to admit I'm not a professional modder. By the same token almost everything I learned about the PS2 came from pro modders. I have a couple that I'm friends with and talk to on a regular basis. I also learned alot from AD addicts with 1,000's of successful burns under their belt the importance of quality media. Good media is very important to me, because my v.4 PS2 is 5 years old, and I know the laser probably will need replaced within the next year. I'll tell you the same thing I tell everybody else. Your laser will get worn down quicker by the cheap dyes on the CMC Mag media than would by quality Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim dyes. It's almost a certainty. I don't get agitated that easily. You know where I and most of the knowledgable members stand on quality media. I'm tired of trying to lecture people on quality media. The data is all there for you to decide for yourself. You asked a question, the reason that Fusion321 got on my nerves was that he was insulting people who clearly were more knowledgable about PS2 modding and media than he was. He basically said everybody who uses quality media was an idiot and he was right for using Memorex. I don't put up with that crap. If people treat me with respect, then I have no probs. I could've torn him to shreds, but I held back. I don't enjoy demeaning people, but I know have at times. Sorry for the rant. Cheers!

Thank you VERY MUCH not only for your exceptionally speedy reply but also your understanding and tolerance to repition. I'v noticed you'v answered lots and lots and lots of the same stupid question about which media to use.

I appologize but I didn't see a straight forword answer to my question so I thought I'd just toss it out there. Again I Thank you much.

Also after digging just a tad deeper into the form I think I'll just throw some money at SuperMediaStore.com for the Taiyo Yuden's 8x DVD-R (50pk x 2) for like 32.99 w/o tax, there so cheap I'd be a fool not to.

I want to do everything I can (w/o HDD) to save that laser.

Thanks Tokijin your an asset to the cause.

The stickies at the top of the forum will answer those questions, they're there for a reason. If you've got time to post, you've got time to read. Use Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media. You can good deals on them at http://www.supermediastore.com The TOC size for SM 2.0 is probably around 4.37GB's, similar to SM 3.6. Why not put it in your PC DVD-ROM drive and check the size in Windows Explorer or with another program?

1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter.
Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on a quality 8x DVD-R.

2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341
If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544
If you really want to do the PS2 backup thing right, pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I only burn to TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. So far I've never had a lag, skip, freeze, or boot failure since I switched to Taiyo Yuden's. With results like that, why would I use anything else? The brand of media you use means very little.
The key determinant of media quality is the Media ID. For info on the Media ID, check the bottom of this thread.

3. Q. Do I need some type of mod to play PS2 backups or imports?
A. Yes you need a modchip: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2 Swap Magic: http://swapmagic3.com/ Memory Card Exploit (Doesn't work with v.11 PS2 and later): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 HD Loader: http://www.hdloader.com.au/hardinstall#prepare or

why do people say burn at 4x when you need to burn at 2.5x.For example i have tdk 1-4x disks and it burns at 2.5x which was final fantasy x and works perfectly then i bought tdk 1-8x and burned at 4x and it didnt even boot up on swap magic SO YOU ARE WRONG

Yes I've been down this road. I refuse to get in battle of wits with an adversary who obviously trumps my intellect. That probably means your firmware is not up to date. You burn at half the max speed of the disc, i.e. 2x on a 4x disc or 4x on an 8x disc. There are several explanations which I will not waste my time explaining to the benevolent burn master of the universe. I'm snippy because this gets asked all the time. It's in the stickies at the forum, and in numerous posts. If you searched at all you'd have found it. My number one pet peeve are noobs who refuse to search. So burn on Oh Yoda of DVD Burning. Use the force, maybe that'll get you good results. I'm sure good media has nothing to do with lol.

There are a lot of fake TDK's out there. The high end TDK's don't compare to Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. People will choose to listen to me because of my reputation, not because I give noobs a hard time. If people choose to listen to you, so be it. It's sophmoric to quibble with somebody like yourself. I've got better things to do. Cheers.
