Poison kills also, and is much more insidious and difficult to detect. Are you going to outlaw all poison now too? Do you think you could? Many things in life can be used for good or ill. Guns are no exception.
thats what I was getting at ^^

We can do better but rarely do because mans first instinct is to be self serving. People rarely look at why they do a thing, why they react a certain way to a certain thing. They just react. It takes a different kind of person to do otherwise.

I am a firm believer in "Man is not created equal" That's just ridiculous. One man's happiness is certainly not anothers. Why should I have to live in some bleeding heart idealists fantasy of a world!? I personally like the uncertainties of life. Like I said before, the fact that life's not fair works for one as well as against one.

True enough, true enough, Michelle. Everything you have said is true enough.
BTW, folks, humans aren't the only species that kills each other for kicks and giggles. As I understand it, Orcas and some other primates do too. Others e.g. rats do for population-control reasons.Ok, 'nuf said on that...:) Good night, all.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

I completely agree.
Michelle,
I must admit I'm not familiar with your nick so a very belated "Welcome to AfterDawn!". I also have to say that it's very refreshing to cut through the testosterone with a woman's point of view and especially from such an intelligent and articulate one. It's an pleasure to have you join our debate which, by the way, I'm very much enjoying.
I've a batch of .22-250 brass to trim and the primer pockets to uniform so for now, good night all :)

@Neph,
Ah, a fellow 22-250 owner, my favorite varmint blaster of all time. Just curious as to what load(s) you are using now days, haven't loaded any since the late 80's and IMR-3031 seemed to be the best.

Blivet,
This is my first go with the .22-250. I inherited a Savage 110 with the laminated target stock and a 26" heavy stanless barrel. At the time I got it my handloading equipment was till in storage but even with factory loads the rifle is incredibly accurate so I can't wait to see what it'll do with good handloads!
I've been buying updated manuals (all mine were five or six years old) and decided my top choice for powder was Varget with IMR4320 running a close second and Benchmark in third place. I went to the sporting goods store last night and the only one of the three they had in stock was Benchmark so that's what I went with. It looks to be good choice and since I've never worked with it I'm excited to try it out. For bullets I picked up some Hornady 40 grain V-Max bullets to try. Many of the manuals are listing 4,100 fps with that weight bullet and the right powder. Hodgdon's site lists a max of 36.5 grains and a top velocity of 4,114 which is pretty damn fast but I think you're really on to something with 3031 though. Hodgdon lists 3031 getting a 40 grainer up to 4,224 which is insane! I'll be picking up some 3031 next time I'm at the sporting goods store.
If the rifle likes the light bullets then good but if not I'll move up to something in 50 grain then up to 55 if that doesn't pan out. I'm hopeful for the 40 grainers though. I'm betting it'll be a spectacular sight when they connect with a prairie dog going that fast :D
I have the most experience loading for the .243 Winchester which is an amazing round. I need to get another rifle in that caliber...............................
That was really good Masterfit. Welcome to Afterdawn by the way :)

Stupidity is alive and well in Congress. What really, really, REALLY pisses me off is that we have a war going on, veterans enduring months of bureaucratic bullshit to get the therapy, rehabilitation and prosthetics they deserve right away, very real terrorist threats, huge border issues, a myriad of chronically underfunded social programs, hungry kids, citizens of all ages unable to afford basic health care, senior citizens getting jacked by a crippled medicare system that doesn't cover even half of what they need and these goddam idiots are wasting Congress's time on stupid ass shit like this. Then again these are the same people that consider making sure gays can't marry takes precedence over all the aforementioned issues. Apparently gays and lawfully armed citizens are a bigger threat to national security than Al Qaida is.
Every one of those asswipes needs to be fired and replaced with REAL everyday thinking people. The Clinton Gun Ban failed miserably by making NO difference in crime and instead of realizing it was completely misdirected these frickin boneheads think adding a couple more guns and asthetic features to the list is going to magically make it work. The bacteria in my dog's crap has more collective intelligence that any one of these idiots.

Here in the UK, if someone is stealing my car & I see them from my bedroom window, I am not allowed to even point my rifle (unloaded BTW) at them. That is assault apparently! You think it's bad where you live, try living over here where you are not allowed to defend yourself, your family or your property with your gun. You are only allowed to fire at someone if your life is in genuine danger..Even then, you would have to explain why you had your gun loaded & why you did not ring the police.. You simply cannot win..

This is true. There was a case few years back, where a guy robbed this guys house, as the theif was running away with the loot he tried jumping the victims fence, as sustained a heavu injury to his leg. The thief was given compensation... i think he was let off lightly...
Long live the queen.

Here in Louisiana, if someone is unarmed breaking into your house, you are allowed to shoot them. No problem. And since Katrina the crime where I live has sky rocketed. The Mayor's across the street neighbor, last week, was murdered in his driveway, for not having anything to give the young thugs.

What my good friend pulsar posted is exactly the reason we need to keep fighting and never give even an inch. The anti gun folks know that there's no way they can ban them in one fell swoop so they keep picking away at what we can and can't have little by little. There's absolutely NO mystery to what their exact plans are and how they'll go about it. All we have to do is look at California to see them in action and what they want for our whole nation. It's a crying shame to think it, but we have plenty of folks that don't realize the Second Amendment is the one that guarantees all the others.

@Neph,
the 22-250 is amazingly accurate out to 300 yards, I have somewhere a group of 5 shots grouped inside of .15" at 10 yards with IMR3031 and 52 grain HPBT (Hornaday) fired from a Remington model 700. I think the velocity is around 3800FPS. One of those meeting Mr. Woodchuck's head results in instant vaporization of said grey matter. I tried some 40 or 45 grain bullets which keyholed on me, so I went back to the heavier bullet weights. 60 grain PSP seem to handle the wind better than the 52 grain. I'm interested to see what luck you have with the more modern formulas. 4200 fps would be amazingly flat out to 200 yards I think.
Spent most of my summers in high school and college trying to trim down the population of vermin on surrounding neighborhood farms. Crows were always the target of choice for most of the farmers. The all time personal record for connecting with a woodchuck was over 800 yards, and the longest crow was 400 yards. You'll love the 22-250 for prarie dogs. I've shot the .243 and the 6MM remington and I almost went with them, just liked the flatter trajectory of the 22-250.
