it's true about how people are always looking for a scapegoat. how about instead of looking for something to blame, people just fix what's wrong in their own damned lives? does anyone besides me think that would be better?

the trouble is for anythign to be done on a large scale polis get involved and side track the issue to whatever can gain them the most votes.
If polis or human community's could effect the core of issues better things would be a bit better off, take for instance the "issues" with guns some see them as bad and unneeded and have tried to erect silly pointless and over the top laws to prevent normal people from having guns yet they ignore other issues that let guns get into the black market, look at the "issues" pot is a wonder drug with the abilties to help chemo patients survive chemo treatment yet the chemical in it is baned to the point you can barely research it hell its even been made into a inhailant but all attemps to get it to the people that need it have been shot down by the pharmaceuticals and the anti drug crowd
hell look at the war on drugs a large pointless movement that is just spinnign its wheels because the need will always be there better to magane and tax the drugs legally in doing that you remove the legs from the cartels.
poli vote pandering and the anti crowds has cuased us more harm than good.

Lord, you said a mouthful there and its one of my pet peeves! A junkie is a junkie and nothing will change that. If they were to change the laws, a lot fewer people would get blown away on the streets of philly for the $5.00 in their wallets! Whenever there is a big crack-down on drugs, crime goes through the roof. A junkie NEEDS his drugs ...a big drug bust drives the street costs through the roof causing large jumps in shootings, B&Es, muggings etc. etc. because the junkie MUST have them. Heroine is nothing but processed morphine. Hell, $300 on the streets or three dollars in a pharmacy! The streets of philly would be a lot safer...and people don't get mugged so much anymore; its easier and safer to just blow them away. Govt. crime statistics has Philly as #1 in murders again at 104 murders so far in '07; New York has second place at 102 (NYC has 13 million people while Philly has only 2 million). The govt readily admits that the overwhelming majority of those murders are drug related so their answer is to clamp down harder on drugs which only leads to more murders because they MUST have their cocaine or heroin. Save the billions and billions on the war on drugs, save lives and sell the damned stuff at Wal Mart! ... put a warning on the side like cigarettes!

screwed up aint it?
it seems people can not be without drugs so moving to a more balanced setup would be great for all,but no the anti people cant remove the trees from their rears and would rather waste money and lives on a endless "war".
god forbid the poor cant get their fix yet the elites can whatever they want with a slap on the wrest...but really any look at probation all it dose is give more power to the black market and the crime rings around them, if you legalize it and tax it you can manage it allot better than by crying OMG BANS BANS IT WE MUST!!! >>
edit
Adding look at the benefits of leaglizeign can bring from refining and making new drugs from old to figuring out the real effects on the body to to create new drugs to counter what the old drugs do,then to that the reality of lowering crime and youth drug use becuse once leaglize it loses a bit of its appeal sure the cost of leaglizeign is health care will get more "drugged" people but thats a small price to pay to "end" this "war" on drugs.

whats drugs have to do with a gun thread?
and maybe if every city had a sheriff like this drugs wouldn't be a problem.a point of veiw from the other side vvvvvvvv
WHY CAN'T ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT DO THIS?
Update on Joe Arpaio
TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO
HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF
AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio
(In Arizona)
who created the
"Tent City Jail":
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.
He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but "G-rated" movies.
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.
Then He Started
Chain Gangs For Women
So He Wouldn't Get
Sued For
Discrimination.
He took away cable TV until
he found out there was
A
Federal Court Order
that
Required Cable TV For Jails.
So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again
Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel.
When asked why the weather channel
He Replied,
So They Will Know
How Hot It's Gonna Be
While They Are Working
ON
My Chain Gangs.
He Cut Off Coffee
Since It Has
Zero Nutritional Value.
When the inmates complained, he told them, "This Isn't
The Ritz/Carlton.
If You Don't Like It,
Don't Come Back."
He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.
When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.
More On The Arizona Sheriff:
With Temperatures Being Even Hotter
Than Usual In Phoenix
(116 Degrees Just Set A New Record),
the Associated Press Reports:
About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment
At The
Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their Government-Issued
Pink Boxer Shorts.
On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached
138 Degrees
Inside The Week Before.
Many Were Also Swathed In Wet, Pink Towels As Sweat Collected On Their Chests And Dripped Down To Their PINK SOCKS.
"It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace,"
Said James Zanzot,
An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year.
"It's Inhumane."
Joe Arpaio,
the tough-guy sheriff
who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic
He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And
Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too,
And They Have To
Wear Full Battle Gear,
But
They Didn't Commit Any Crimes,
So Shut Your Damned Mouths!"
Way To Go, Sheriff!
Maybe if all prisons were like this one
there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders.
Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

@aabbccdd...what I was getting at is that most handgun murders in Philly as well as NYC are drug related in one way or another.

We're fine fellas - this one's bound to wander a bit.
I live in Glendale which butts up against Phoenix where Arpaio runs things and believe you me he is a VERY polarizing individual. People either love what he does or think he's the worst scum of the earth. I have a buddy who had the pleasure of staying in tent city and he said the baloney sandwiches they got there were damn near inedible. I like the idea of making jail more like jail and less like a hotel.
As for the murders, Gerry's right on the money - a very large part of those are indeed drug related. That's something the anti gun folks like to leave out in their studies because it sheds to much light on the true picture. They'd have a harder time selling gun control if everyone realized the picture of masses of regular everyday folks wasting each other wasn't true.

I just love the current debate in Littleton Colorado right now over the statue of Danny Dietz, who received the Navy Cross for his heroic actions over in Afghanistan, and the people who are objecting to the fact that the statue of Danny is holding an automatic rifle. Apparently this glorifies violence in their view. The man died while on a mission as a Navy SEAL, what the hell should he be holding, a frisbee? Other older war hero's have been depicted with a sword in their hand, what the hell's the difference? I mean for crying out loud, these same "concerned parents" are probably the same ones who are letting their kids play 5 hours of violent video games every day no doubt...

violence and war are part of our society. if these people don't like it, they should be out trying to make peace, not bitching about a statue and making more trouble.

michelle9,
That whole complaint about Danny's statue makes me sick and I completely agree with your comments. Maybe they'd be happy if he held a nerf bat or maybe a picture of Sarah Brady in his arms.
They're trying to somehow associate a man with a service rifle who died serving his country with a couple of little maladjusted f*ck ups who went on a shooting spree at school . If these people are so lacking in parenting skills and/or so disillusioned that they can't intelligently explain the difference between a soldier and punk mass muderers to their kids I truly feel sorry for those kids.

While my opinions on this subject may differ from most, I certainly agree; that's a bunch of bulls***! Philly is a city of bronze sculptures in honor of hero's clear back to the revolution and like michelle9 said, they all have sabres in the air, or holding musketts (sp?), rifles etc. War heros didn't fight with diplomatic language.

With today's political correctness, the term, "war hero," is becoming as abhorrent as after the Vietnam war. Government, where are the layoffs when we need them.

@garmoon...well, "Hero", like "terrorist" has become seriously overused. Whether they're good guys or bad, overuse tends to desensitize (sp?) us to the extraoridinary actions which the word implies and robs the appropriate people of the praise or infamy they deserve.

The Army (Pentagon brass specifically) has egg all over its face now due to the lies and misinformation spread after the Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch incidents. They have done more to destroy their credibility than all of Al-Quaida's efforts to date. Just tell the truth and let our soldier's actions speak for themselves, They are doing the best that they can under the circumstances, do them the honor of telling them and the American people the truth. Just my humble opinion.

@blivetNC...you're absolutely right. "Friendly Fire" is something understood by everyone that was ever in the military and despite all efforts to minimize the number of incidents, it will always happen. War, by its very nature, is organized chaos. There was no reason to lie about it in the first place.

gerry1, you've totally hit upon a pet peeve of mine. The word "hero" is used most inappropriately these days. for example, while I have sympathy for anyone who's lost a loved one, I never did get calling the victims of the 9/11 tragedy heroes. The passengers that crashed the plane they were on before it could be used as a weapon to take others down with them were heroes. The fire fighters and rescuers who knew what they were facing and went ahead anyway with their efforts were heroic. Well, that is only my opinion anyway. Danny Dietz held off the enemy so that the rest of his team could make their escape. I would deem that to be a hero. As usual the government distorts what is, they try to make heroes of those who aren't and ignore those who blatantly are, go figure. I mean, just how stupid do you have to be to work in government?

not stupid, but devious and cunning towards whatever end you desire.
as much as we like to think otherwise, the government is not concerned with the good of the minority, but only in the good of keeping what they have and gaining more over the rest of the populace.

such is the true function of government. best choice is to go to a country where the public still holds a semblance of power over the people they "allow" to govern them. we've got a king and his lords, here. the word "progress" has been thrown around a lot, especially with the school system, the war, etc etc, yet all i've seen would best be dubbed "regress."
i'm moving to germany in about 3-5 years. from there, maybe canada, maybe england. not really sure. but i certainly don't want to be around for the complete fall of what was once the world's most envied nation.

I'd think moving from a lite-socialist to a hardcore-socialist society would be a step backwards, Auslander. The U.S. certainly has its faults, and I'm not too fond of our Congress, but this still is a relatively free country in which you are a citizen, not a subject. I'm not sure where you live but consider the south or southwest. Now, if you lived in New Jersey or New York, then, yes, you have no freedom and will have your life micromanaged by government. But not all of the U.S. is like that, and, hopefully, never will be.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
