I don't know much about Swap Magic 3.6.
I use either DVD -R or DVD+R with Swap Magic 3.8 and have no problems. I use a good quality brand though, either Verbatim, Ritek, Taiyo Yuden and Sony.
I burn at half my DVD speed and only use DVD Decrypter.

Well since I have never used a version of Swap Magic before this I cannot say, only that I have not burned a game yet that won't play.
I have backed up more than 50 or more games and played them all even Import games.
They play fine on my V7 and my V14.
Like replied in the other thread that you posted a lot prefer DVD-R over DVD+R, but the quality is important and the speed you burn it at and for me I prefer to use DVD Decrypter to burn them.

I have burned and played Scarface with swap magic... look at my sig.... every single game I have ever burned over the last 2 1/2 years, I have not had one that did not play... I still use swap magic 3.3.. never had a reason to upgrade... If its dvd 9, I just edit it and resize to DVD5 and plays perfect. Far as media I use.. I use the cheapest money will buy... I HAVE NEVER had problems.... whats funny is this cheap of brand I use, I found out is made in the same damn factories as many other expensive brands... Its kinda like food, they make it for a variety of companies, then just label them to whom they sell too... Its all bout $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$............ Anyway... also in my opinion, I have a ver7 ps2, I believe they are one of the best for mod'n.. I have never had problems...most the peps I talk to that have ver7, say the same...

Hey hey.
I've been skimming through the threads here and on other forums and (because I'm probably blind) I haven't found a solution to this problem.
I just received my copies of Swap Magic 3.6 and the Magic Switch tools and, after fighting with the Magic Switch stuff, can finally get my ps2 to spin the discs while opened. My problem is that the MS DVD disc does not load at all. Unlike other people who have problems with the DVD, my ps2 does not load to the memory card screen. It acts as if it were going to load, but then the screen stays black and it never finishes loading.
So I looked around for a fix and tried using the SM CD instead. My problem with this is that I've read once the SM load screen appears, I should pop the top and put a legit PS2 disc in so I'll get a TOC message. When I open the ps2 and put in a game (Devil May Cry 2), nothing happens. My ps2 doesn't realize I've switched discs. If I try and just load DMC2, I get the 'insert a valid ps2 disc' message instead.
So there's my problem? Is the 'flip-top' people mention the standard ps2 slim top, or is it the custom top made for switching? I have Magic Switch instead of that, so is there a fix for this problem without having to buy another part? The ps2 loads regular games fine and is fairly new, so I don't think it's a problem with the lens, but I could be wrong.
Anyway, does anyone have a suggestion for a solution? I haven't tested the discs on another ps2 yet, so I don't know if they're the problem. What should I do if it works on another ps2 and, alternatively, what should I do if it doesn't?
I'm not even really concerned about whether back-ups will work yet. I just want this thing to recognize something. Is there a different things I should get, or do you think I can get it to work with what I've got?
I'm running a PS2 Slim SCPH-75001 Black and any back-ups I've burned so far will be on Philips DVD+R discs. The main reason I got Swap Magic 3.6 is so I can play the new Naruto game and other import fighters.
So, uhh...help?

Hi there
You probably just got a bad DVD with your SM 3.6
I would just contact who you purchased it from and see if they will exchange it.
I had to do that with my first set of Swap Magic DVD. They gladly exchanged it where I bought from. I just had to return mine first with their email, then they sent me a new one.
As for the TOC refresh it goes like this for your version of PS2.
For PSTwo model SCPH-7000X to SCPH-7500X:
Open the disc door and remove Magic Switch ?Tool A?, replace CODER disc with larger TOC size disc, then reinstall
Magic Switch ?Tool A? *(Caution: the disc will start spinning once the ?Tool A? has been reinstalled). When the TOC
refreshing finished, the disc will stop spinning and a scrolling text will tell you to swap your own program. Swap the
discs with your Backup/Import or Homebrew program and press to run the program.
To play back up games do the following:
Requirements:
A Ps2 (any will do I think).
Swap Magic CD ( I don't think the version matters, I use 3.6)
A real ps2 game DVD-5 (High TOC size is a must! Like Devil May Cry or Xenosaga 2).
CD loader (as a bootable disc).
A PS2 DVD backup game.
1. Boot the SM CD version
2. Boot CD loader
3. When CD loader appears, eject CD Loader properly (DON'T USE THE SLIDE CARD OR TOOL METHOD.)
4. Insert the real DVD PS2 game. The screen should load some numbers of the bottom like 4.37GB, when its done reading the disc.
5. Press 'X'
6. Screen will ask you, Boot EA method or something. Now you replace the game with your backup, using the Swap Magic method (I.E Slide card or slim tools).
7. Press 'X' again and the game should boot.
you can download cdloader from here.

Great, thanks. Now I have a new problem. At first it wouldn't even recognize the DVD+R and tell me to insert a valid disc. After burning it using DVD Decrypter, the ps2 seems to recognize the disc, but now it just keeps spinning. Any suggestions for this? I burned the disc at 2.4x and I'm still using Phillips DVD+R.
I spent most of the evening searching this and other forums for getting CD Loader to work, so I'm a litle too burned out right now to search for a solution to this new problem.

Ok if you removed tool A to do the TOC refresh, you then need to replace tool A back. That will stop the disc from spinning.
That would be at step 6 you would need to put the tool back in place as you are then using the Swap Magic Method then.

Yep. I did that and it just keeps spinning, never actually leaving the CD Loader screen.
When it gets to the EA method screen, I open the fliptop, switch the ps2 dvd with the DVDR, plug tool A back in (and tape it down so it stays), then press X. At that point the DVDR starts spinning and continues spinning with nothing happening.
The only thing I can think is that maybe I'm burning the disc wrong, as I followed your steps exactly. When I read the comments for the torrent of the game I'm trying, the only problems people have had is some skipping and freezing issue, all of which seem to be caused by the speed it was burned at. Aside from 'load ISO into image burning program and press start' is there some special setting for writing the actual disc, maybe?

Basically burning DVD+R with DVD Decrypter, the only other setting I know people say is too change the book type to DVD ROM.
I burn games on either DVD-R or DVD+R and they are fine. Mine is always to DVD ROM Book type.
Do you have another back up you could try with. I know using Action Max replay, one presses the triangle to get the disc to stop, but that is with using SM DVD. Don't know if would work with this method.
I have never done this method by cdloader, so not sure,I just know the instructions on it.
Are you able to exchange your SM DVD with whom you purchased from.

So now I've got three things that happens. Either the game will start to load and just spin non-stop on a black screen, I'm told it's an invalid disc or I will get a large disc read error. This thing is seriously starting to annoy me. If there's anyone who's done this method and had similar problems, I'd love some feedback from them.
And no, my retailer is being a jerk about replacing the SM DVD disc, so I've gotta find another way to replace it.

Alright, folks. I've been trying to avoid posting here for help, and have done quite a bit of searching around. Here's my problem.
After much messing around, I finally managed to get my PS2 to read the Swap Magic discs. (Turns out my laser was dirty.) I've finally gotten it to read the DVD disc. Now, I'm trying to play an original (not backup) import of "Mahou Sensei Negima! 2-Jikanme ~Tatakau Otometachi! Mahora Daiundokai SP~" (NTSC-Japan). I have a v9 50001 model PS2.
Whenever I attempt to boot the game, after locking the tray back in, it goes to a black screen, quickly goes back to the browser, then swishes away and gives me the "Please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 format disc" with the red misty thing behind. So, I tried again. This time, I tried hitting square for a special boot. It tells me "Not a valid PS2 disc."
So then I remember something about a TOC thing. So, when I get to the Swap Magic screen, I put in my copy of Devil May Cry and let it refresh the TOC. It refreshes the TOC, tells me to insert my game, I do... I think I finally win...And bam. Same error.
I don't know what the deal is. This isn't a backup, its a legit import game. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. All I want to do is play this stinkin' game. XD Is that so much to ask?
EDIT: It may be worth noting that I am using the Swap Magic 3.6 discs.

Like the above post, I've been searching about before posting here.Up until a few days ago, my Slim PS2 with FlipTop/SwapMagic combo was working perfectly. I've had it for around a month with no hassles at all.
Then I had an unusual problem with Action Relay Max and a game. It loaded the game, but it had all garbage graphics on the screen, suddenly the disc sounded like it was being spun very fast and I could smell something odd coming from the PS2. I stopped it immediatly, but ever since I've not been able to boot DVD backups at all. Retail games work fine still, but for some reason it's done something to make backups not work.
SwapMagic DVD is working fine booting retail games and loading, but the minute I take out a disc to swap, it will do the TOC refresh stuff and if I do manage to get a game in, it will say that the disc is not a PS2 DVD. I've tried with multiple backups and it's not been working at all.
I would try the Laser adjust, but I can't find any photos or diagrams on where to do it exactly, I don't want to follow a text description only. Anyone know what the problem would be?

There are a few things that can go wrong in a PS2 when it will not read a disc properly.
The laser could be going, or could need cleaning, adjusting. The gear drive, the motor spinning etc.
If you do a search on this forum for PS2 repair, quite a few good topics come up and some with members profiles that have a link to a guide for newer PS2.
For older PS2 a guide to taking apart is here:

Yes they are hard to find manuals for the Slim PS2.
You can get my copy here of a V14. Do not post this elsewhere or upload anywhere. I will only put it up for a short time.
Its just for dissassembly.
A another good place with some pointers on what could be wrong is here.

I'm not going to remove the drive myself. If I'm removing the drive, I'll take it to a professional, seeing as I'm not confident with electronics.
However, what I was refering to was this;
Flip Top Users:
1.Turn On Your PS2.
2.Eject The PS2 Tray And Turn Off Your PS2.
3.Open The PS2 Flip Top Cover Adn You Should be able to see the lens and everything around it.
4.look for a little white round dial that may be partially covered,
5.after you have located this dial Mark where it is set at with a marker or pencil.
6. Now keep turn the dial counter clockwise until it the Ps2 lens drops(you will see the lens module go down). Now turn on your ps2 and insert the ps2 game that used to say "Disc Read Error",does the game load? if it does then you are done. If it does not load then you need to turn the dial some more.keep turning the little dial and checking if the cd reads. it may take a while to find the spot on the dial so that it can read properly, but it is worth the time since it saves you money on buying a new PS2 Lens.
I had been looking for images to guide me, but there's none I can find.

What version PS2 is yours. I am not sure this works in later versions of PS2. I have never opened my version 14.
The white cog they talk about like pictured here is for PS2 up to about V10 that you can adjust. Just scroll down the page a bit.
