I have exactly the same problem as some of the guys that posted a month or so ago: my SM DVD disk just won't load. I'm using the flip top and SM 3.6 on a ver.1 PS2. It does the same thing - goes straight to the screen where you can select memory card or PS2 disk, but when I try to load the PS2 disk it just puts me back in that same screen again.
Sometimes it will work, but its very rare. I can't believe that the laser is dirty or not aimed correctly because when it does load SM, the backups I put in load immediately with ZERO issues. Also, I have no trouble playing pressed original PS2 or PS games.
I've looked everywhere for advice, but I've found nothing conclusive in the way of a fix for this issue. One person said (in reponse to another person who had the same issue) that its because the DVD tray isn't "locked" enough? Does this mean anything to anyone? Was I supposed to lock the tray in place so that it couldn't be used once the flip top is installed? I didn't see that in the instructions I used.
I've also posted in the PS2 DVD burning forum, but I'm hoping this thread sees more attention from those who know the problem I'm having. Sorry for the double post. I appreciate any help you have to offer.

OK...If you asked for help since my last post, find your name and read your answer.
tmt333- I searched yahoo for swap magic keys instructions...Guess what came up? http://www.magickeys.net/MagicKeys%202.html SEARCH BEFORE ASKING
steevo87- Your burn is messed up. You need to burn again. Burn at a good speed, good media, blah blah blah...It's not the file itself, the burn is fawked.
neon- Adjust your laser. Use the guide in this thread, and make sure to mark the original position. If you can't get it to work, just change it back to the original position and you haven't lost anything.
Anything else? =)

Could also just be you have a bad DVD of Swap Magic.
When i first got mine it only played a few times. I contacted the place I bought it from and sent it back for a new one.

It interesting, I tried cleaning the laser and adjusting the laser, but none of that worked. However, when I tried positioning the PS2 in vertical orientation, it seems to load every time (although slowly). I assume this means that my laser needs to be adjusted.
The weird thing was, when I tried adjusting the laser with that big white cog in the back, it would reset itself after I try to turn the PS2 on. First I marked it with a little dot from a sharpie, then I'd try turning in 20-30 degree increments and start it up. None of this made a difference, and it seemed that every time I opened it up again to adjust the cog, the dot that I marked with was back where it started. I'm not sure if I'm adjusting the right cog, but I can't see any other one in there.

I don't know if I've missed something in this topic somewhere but anyway...
I'm ordering Swap Magic and I just wanted to be sure of a few things. I've been flickering about and I've seen a few people talk about having problems booting up their Ps2 CD disks.
If there isn't a way round this then I would have to stick to PS2 DVD backups right?
Well, would it be possible to burn games that are originally PS2 CD disks and take the files, then burn them on to a dvd and boot up with swap magic?

Is this a backup of PS2 Sega Genesis Collection or is this your own build.
Are all your roms just as bin files in the folder named Roms on the DVD.
My DVD looks like this:
and it loads the roms perfectly.

You need a cdloader to play capcom or sega collection. I had the same problem before, but I was be able to come up with a method to play them:
(my ps2 is version 1 btw, I know, I know, I am old, haha)
1. Download cdloader from magicswapfix, you can find their website by doing a google search
2. Boot up your SM CD
3. Use slide tool to switch your SM CD to cdloader
(at this point, the cdloader didn't give me options to choose different modes, so I need to do step 4, skip 4 if you see the options screen)
4. I use slide tool to switch cdloader to cdloader, yes, i switch the same cd twice since i couldn't see the option screen
5. Now you see the option screen, now, select 5V3 No PN, and press X
6, Now, use the slide tool once again to load your SM CD once more
7. Once your SM CD screen comes up, eject it and put in a DVD to refresh TOC
8. Use slider tool to take out your TOC and put in your sega genesis disc
9. It works!
10. Dance around to celebrate the victory! (<------- sorry, I watched too much movies, haha)
Hope this helps

My SM 3.8 loads and plays PS2 Sega Genesis Collection just fine from DVD.
I don't need to use a cd loader with it.

Ok, so if I'm having the problem where when I try to boot a DVD with swap magic, and it takes me to the Browser showing the memory card and the golden disc, then I have to clean/adjust my lens?
I have the PS2 V1 by the way.

Not necessarily no.... if this is a new SM DVD it may be defective...
Have you tried the CD version of swap magic and does it work.
I know when I first recieved my Swap magic the DVD didnt always play and would go to ps2 browser instead.
I had to return it for a new disk.

Erm, I meant that the SM DVD does work... at leas ti think it does... I have SM3.8 wCoder combo and my ps2 does read the disc, it's just when I try to boot discs there's a problem. After SM loads, i use the slide card tool to switch discs so that my backup is in the drive, and then I try to boot the disc with the 'normal' option. This makes the PS2 take me to the browser with the memory card/disc.
Unless you understood me the first time, in which case my disc really is defective. argh.

Ok I understand...the SM 3.8 comes up to its screen. But its when you use the slide tool, then go to change discs that it goes to the ps2 browser..
Is this the first time you have used the slide tool and SM 3.8 ?
If it is I am just wondering if you have slid the tool all the way properly.

This is my first time using the slide card/swap magic, but i'm pretty positive that I am using them correctly. I followed the instructions in that link you posted excatly and it's still doing the same thing..
Here's what happens:
I turn on my PS2 and SM loads.
On the swap magic title screen(normal, special, etc.) I use the slide card to switch the discs.
After I close the drive with my slide card, I press X to select normal, and then X again for default.
Then it displays 'booting disc in drive...'
Then it takes me to the PS2 browser.
Anybody have any idea what's wrong?

Ok I would then ask you what type of Media(Disks) are you burning your back up games on and perhaps what speed you burned them at.
I burn the games at half the speed of my DVD Burner which is an 16X so I burn games at 8X.

Hi all,
I found this thread after my Swap Magic DVD discs stopped booting/working on my slim V12 PS2. It kept on going to the browser and it wouldn't launch period. Did get it working and I'm not sure if it'll help anyone but I thought I'd share my findings.
Tried cleaning my lens without much success. Finally tried cleaning it with alcohol and it worked somewhat. The Swap Magic DVD started working again. So I popped in a backup and it worked for a bit till it started locking up. After powering down, I popped in the Swap Magic disc again and it wouldn't read like the original symptoms. Getting frustrated, I cleaned it again and got the Swap Magic disc to be recognized by my PS2 again. Stopped there and jumped on my PC to look for more info.
After googling for some info, I ended up at this site and noticed that everyone was recommending better media for backups. So I opted to try a test. Popped in another backup that I used Verbatim media and it booted fine. The catch was that it didn't lock up at all. Reseted my PS2 again with the Swap Magic disc and it came up fine. Popped in another disc that was recorded on Verbatim and again, no problem.
Came to the conclusion that the media I was using was causing the problem (Memorex). Seems that jiggling around the lens a bit seems to fix the whole Swap Magic problem.
So if anyone is having a problem, try the "jiggle the lens" method to see if the Swap Magic disc launches properly. Then try a backup with newer or better media that hasn't given you a problem in the past.
HTH.

Hi,
I am new to all this so excuse if I ask some simple and obvious questions.
After going through a lot of the discussions here (a commendable amount of information and highly knowledgeable people). I finally bought Swap Magic 3.6 and magic Keys2 for my slim PS2 V15. I succesfully installed the keys and used Swap Magic to boot one backed up game. Everything worked fine.
I have a game (iso) which was patched for HDloader. It has some hdloader.ELF. I dont have any hard disc to use for my PS2 nor do I want to use HD loader. I want to use this iso with my swap magic.
I burned this iso using Nero onto a verbatim disk and tried swapping to this disk using swapmagic. It says not a valid ps2 disk.
How do I use this HDLoader patched iso with my swap magic. Please help.
Thanks,
Koi

Hey there, I ordered my second set of Swap Magic Disks and recently ran across a problem booting the DVD disk. I was sure the disk was defective and I emailed the retailer (www.ultimateconsoleguides.com).
The guy there made a suggestion to make sure the disk was instered all the way onto the spindle. I know it sounds obvious, but I rechecked and now my Swap Magic Disk DVD boots everytime on the first try.
Here's what I found on the site FAQ;
------------------------------------
Q: Hey, my Swap Magic Disk DVD/CD will not boot!!! What gives!!?!!
A: A problem I see with DVD Coder disks is the way the disk is made leaves a gap between the layers of the disk, which is visible if you look closely at the center spindle hole. 90% of the disks I receive back work perfectly. Why? Because people are not inserting the disk all the way onto the PS2 spindle. They leave it off on one side, not pushed down all the way on one side, ect.... Take your fingers and apply pressure around the spindle hub to make sure the disk is on securely before attempting to boot it. People don't even think about it- they hastily slap the disk into the PS2, it boots unbalanced because its on the spindle cock-eyed and customers email me claiming the disk is defective.
Please make sure the disk is securely, evenly, and completely on the disk spindle before attempting to boot the disk.
------------------------------------
I thought it was very helpful so I figured I would post this information here for anyone who may be experiencing a problem with thier SMD DVD.

You will probably have to remove the hdloader.elf. You may also have to edit the SYSTEM.CNF but I am not sure. To do that and see if it has any reference to the hdloader.elf, you only have to open a new notepad and drag the SYSTEM.CNF to it. It will open up, then you can see.
Ok first make sure you have extracted the ISO to a folder, using Apache 2.
Then I would open cdvd_imlsiso_v4.02, open ISO that you have, and click the iso2iml and direct it to the folder where you extracted the ISO.
Then from the extracted folder, delete the hdloader.elf and check the SYSTEM.CNF.
It should just look like this: except it will have your SLUS file or whatever it is you have.
BOOT2 = cdrom0:\SLUS_466.51;1
VER = 1.00
VMODE = NTSC
Once you have done this, you can open up cdvd_iml2iso again browse for the iml we saved in the extracted folder, then click full path, so it shows the iml path, then just click iml2iso. Wait and let it do its thing.
When done you can exit and load your new ISO up in DVD Decrypter and burn it at half your DVD burner speed.
If you don't have these files you can get them here.
http://www.exploitstation.com/index.php?page=downloads
or here: http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=mis.html
Now also if you want you can open up your ISO in Apache and take a screen shot and upload it if you would like us to see what files are there.
Let us know how you make out.

hey guys, i have a black slimline ps2 (old one) and i recently bought magickeys2 with swap magic 3.6, after i got them it took me 10 min to install after i eventually got it to work i realized why, because magic keys2 are for the satin silver and ceramic white even though they work on mine just a tip for other users.
now my question, when u boot my discs up they're quite loud, and it sounds like the bottom of my discs get scrached. Is it possible thats it's because there magickeys 2 not 1 and if not how can i prevent it?
thanks in advanced
