okay, tried all but the last, modem went down, finally came back up.
still have downloads (now using bittornado) of about 1-5 kBs and DL times that are about 3-5X longer than bittorrents. these DL's are very highly seeded, 30-50 seeds and 100-300 leeches respectively. Thinking about forwarding the higher ports but I'm thinking that still isnt going to solve my "stealthed" status. I need to get those ports open and not blocked as they apperently still are..gonna try a couple hail mary's. brb

You need to narrow down the problem. Trying higher ports will at least say it isn't that if it doesn't work.
Like I mentioned, the BitTornado guide specifically mentions not to use the BitTorrent standard ports you are trying to use because they are well known and some ISPs are now blocking their use..
I don't think a plain modem can do port forwarding. I've never heard of it anyway, but I am not an expert.
A shot in the dark, but also in "pref/advanced" where you have the number of max files and max peers, if you mouse-over the number of peers it mentions about problems with some operating systems and the number of open ports, and suggests "60" max for peers. i don't think this is your problem because it is meant for Win Me, but I myself put 200 (max peers) there (win XP) and do not leave it to the default "unlimited". I'll bet after 100 peers it doesn't matter, your speed won't be better if you had more than that.

Thanks bigmac i think that might have helped a bit. I am, however still yellow, suggesting that i'm still behind a firewall. Red, I took down my XP firewall. I also forwarded my ports on my router for 6881-6991, a series of about 200 in the 16-18000 range and another range in the 25000+. For BitTornado i'm using the series in the 25000+ range. Still yellow. Still stealthed. Where the hell is this firewall coming from?

sorry, apperently it was a fluke. http://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 (remember to hit 'skip' in the upper right) still says all ports are stealthed. My modem went dead just after. What I had done was go into the router settings and change the IP from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1..2
Alas, I now have all reds instead and only one yellow. gonna give it about 15-20 minutes see if anything changes.
HEy! do I have to setup a static IP in the router? there's an option for that and i've read several things saying I shoud, Red, this may help you max out your speeds. I tried to but the directions I was using were apperently not refering to what I was using so i turned it back to automatically get it.
Anyone find anything good on how to set up static IP's?

Okay... Confused now. I have 1 green DLing @ 15kBs, 2 yellow @ 0Kbs, and 3 red, whereas before, they were all yellow and DLing around 5-20. I even saw a 30 in there! How do I have the one green when the port is still showing as stealthed?

This may or may not help. You may already know this.
192.168.1.1 is the router's address on your home network (I beleive). 192.168.1..2 would be most likely your main computer on your home network. I have the same numbers (Netgear) but you are showing ..2 while mine is .2
When I port forward, I use the computer's home network address, not the router's. For me it is 192.168.1.2, or my P3, which I have to use different ports with, would end in .4 (another computer is .3)
So hopefully this will help, though I don't know your brand.
As far as the colored lights you are reporting - I get one light in BitTornado. You have confused me with 5 lights.
Why don't you just enter into BitTornado one port start to end. That is all you need. You like the 25000 range, then repeat that number twice and untick "random" (tick or un-tick shouln't matter anyway).
You are port forwarding too many ports you are leaving your computer more vulnerable.

sorry i meant .2 not ..2
I'm using lynksis
The 5 lights are for 5 seperate DL's. I have 5 BT windows open.
I set the ip address to 192.168.1.2 in the gaming > port range forwarding > port range IP address
Do I need to set up the static IP address? everything's shouting "yes" at me but I dont understand how to. I know where to go (192.168.1.1 in explorer browser for lynksis, leave user name blank and enter "admin" for password in the box that pops up for anyone else trying).
In the basic setup menu I can set it from "Obtain an IP automatically" to "Static IP"
Host name = I dunno, does it matter?
Domain name = I dunno, I just put what it says when I click on my network places = ftp.cs.umn.edu
Then in the network setup page it has
Router IP > Local IPO Address : 192.168.1.1 (think it was there already)
> Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0 (standard I think)
Network address server settings (DHCP) > Local DHCP server : Enabled
> Start IP address: 192.168.1.[100] (the 100 is changeable, That's what was there already)
> Number of addresses: [50] (50 was laready there)
>DHCP address range : 192.168.1.100-149
>Client lease time : one day
>Static DNS 1:68.48.0.12 (the DNS I found in the settings per portforward.com)
>Static DNS 2:68.87.64.196 (the DNS I found in the settings per portforward.com)
>Static DNS 3:68.87.66.196 (the DNS I found in the settings per portforward.com)
>WINS: 0.0.0.0 (I dont know what the hell to put here, does it matter?)
Okay that's it. I cant figure out how to make my static IP work but i think this may be the key to mine and possibly several of our problems

1st, I was told before to set up a static IP. I tried it (email to Netgear), and it hurt not helped. As far as I figure you just want the network number assignwed to your computer to stay the same. I can do this with my Netygear Router - there is a place for perrmanent assignment. As long as your computer remains ".2" all of the time, I wouldn't worry about it.
Your other router quotes mean nothing to me. I don't know.
What is a concern is you just said you had 5 BitTornado downloads going at the same time. This is most likely your problem right there.
One. One. One at a friggin time!! ---> I've mentioned how many times, your download speed depends on your upload speed. It should be common sense.. At least that part was to me.. If you are in a torrent and it is getting 1/5th of your upload capability, you are not going to get anything much in download speed. It was purposely writtern this way. You have to share your upload speed or else you'll be at a trickle. You only have so much upload bandwidth to share and that is it. if you had 5 open, the upload speed in each is near dial up speeds..
Plus in each window you probably have 4 max uplods ticked? 4 in each = 20.. I think this would affect you quite a bit too. Maybe 6 max uploads in one torrent at Comcast's 400 Kbps up.. I know when I set more than 8 max uploads in a torrent I see the speed start to suffer. And if you had 20 going, that's going to hurt.
What is your max upload speed told to you by your ISP - and what setting in BitTorrent do you put? This is most important.
There is a command in BitTornado thats says something to the effect of being able toi do more than one at one time. Perhaps if two torrents are barely seeded and peered, maybe - maybe two at one time might be in order. I've never done it myself though.
Now, this why I bought an old 600 MHz Pentium 3 for like $80. I'll use it to get torrents if i want to use my main computer without the slowing down hassles that multitasking can cause. Since countless hours are spent retrieving torrents anyway, why not have a dedicated machine? You can retrieve the finshed product via the home network at some point.
Do one torrent, wait a while and see if green. Still they'll take hours even for one if it is a movie. Even a one hour TV show at 350 MBs still could take a couple of hours..

The best way I can think of is setting the priority to high. Setting the individual file priority to highest. And setting the task to REALTIME priority, allthough watch you don't go overspeed, if your using a USB MODEM then the power is within your PC, it might restart.
And yeh, run one .torrent at a time, and DSL users should LIMIT THEIR UPLOAD not many people do this but it increases your download speed by upto half the kb/s you were originally getting! Go to options/preferences and limit the u/l speed. For me, Ive limited mines to 23kb/s and im on 576kb/s Broadband. Soon to be updated to 1mbps :P

Saying that you've read this and those suggestions really does not help out much. There have been a lot of suggestions in many different posts.
As always, my advise is to get the BitTornado client as opposed to using the BitTorrent client. Why? Because it has a colored light system (as do some other clients) and thus for example if your light is always yellow then we know there is most likely a firewall problem. Also it is highly configurable. You get to mess with numbers. Wheee.. Give it a try. Also - never leave any setting to "automatic" with it. St5art with slow DSL and then adjust the numbers in the main window to fit your max speeds scenario.
Now, am I correct in assuming you 384/128 mentioning means max 384 download speed and 128 upload speed? If this is so, you are hurting. To get any files of size, it is going to really take some time.
The rest of this post is assuming the 128 Kbps upload/384 kbps download barriers you mentioned. If this assumption is wrong then pick and choose any info that might help. if you already know this just ignore me.
What is going to hurt you is that upload speed. And even a 384 download speed is not really going to help, it's going to be a slower download than normal even if you got all of that..
But back to upload speed - the whole torrent system is based on you sharing your upload speed. If you only have 128 Kbps upload maximum (this would also be the same as 16 KB/s then Ughhhh, you might be being looked at as holding back with your upload speed and thus the program will punsih you and not give you good download rates. I just don't know if 128 Kbps is good enough or not.. (that 128 Kbps/16 KB/s reporting speed in bits vs bytes, 8 bits = a byte).
With cable I had a 256 upload max, and now I have 400 max upload, though with cable different times of day might mean different speeds. With 256 upload I did OK. With the newer 400 Kbps upload Comcast gave everyone now I seem to not be doing that much better though I can't tell for sure. Right now I am almost halfway through a 5 gigabyte torrent (a TV series - a years worth) and am downloading at about 640 Kbps (80 KB/s). With 38 seeds and 89 peeers you'd think it wopuld be faster than this, but different trackers/torrents are different. I am happy with this but it is an all day and pArt of the night affair to get a 5 gig torrent. (That's why I recommend a 2nd computer on a home network - a cheap P3 will do). I've hit 1000 Kbps/1500 Kpbs with some torrents, and even 2000 Kbps (2 Mbps / 250 KB/s) a few times. Don't ask me why such a difference, the ammount of peers was less and maybe the seeds too. I can't explain it.. I've had almost 200 peersw before too and that doesn't help (I set max peerrs to 200, not leave it on unlimited - it doesn't seems to matter after 80 peers anyway). The 2000 Kpbs I've gotten a few times was when I only had 256 up max. The speed will fluctuate anyway, and it takes time to build up too.
But really you need to check out your speed at a place like DSLreports to see what your true upload/download speed is:
http://www.dslreports.com/stest/0
With torrent programs, you should normally set your max upload in the torrent program to be 80% of your max upload speed that you really have on the Internet. If that really 128 Kbps/16KB/s, then 80% of 16 KB/s is what - 14 KB/s?
The problem is I am not sure how torrent programs are going to react when talking this sub-par upload speed. It (the torrent program) might think you are holding out on it and thus keep your download speed in check.

OK. I'll guess. your "Fail" message might just be something that happened but then the program tried it again and it did work. From time to time I see a bad packet or whatever it is called come through, and BitTornado of course reports it in red I think, then it continues on and tries again. It is ticked so if a bad packet of info comes through, that sender is cut out of my loop of people in the network so I'll never receive more info from that person..
But your warning message I don't know what it means - guessing, it looks like you received info, but your computer could not read it and kept trying until it gave up (time-out ??) or it tried to write to your hard drive and couldn't do it and gave up, ran out of allotted time to do so it time-out.. I don't know what is the cause really. Do you have a good modern computer with plenty of open hard drive space, or are we dealing with say, and old P3 and Windows 98?
The light going un-green - so what color is it now? Yellow or what?
It might be that you lost all seeds - I am not sure. A seed is someone with a complete copy of the program. You could still be downloading from people with more bytes of the program, but with no seed you'll all eventually stall out without a complete copy. At least one seed is needed.
Peers are those like you with an incomplete copy that are sharing their upload bandwidth also.
A "leech" I guess is someone downloading but not sharing their upload bandwidth. In other P2P network types like the Bearshare or Kazaa networks, this no sharing uploads is OK as far as your download speed not suffering. But with the torrent P2p networks it's differently handled and if you are a true leech your download speed will really be slow because it knows you are not uploading. Another guess of "leech" could mean someone who even does share some upload bandwidth but as soon as they get the complete program they shut off the torrent, so their up/down ratios don't look so hot. You should leave your computer on and still uploading (sharing) once you get a complete copy, at least for a while, so to be a good sharer..
Finally, BitTornado is not perfect. last week I had a yellow light stay yellow and I do not know what was going on unless my router screwed up the firewall - but i think my seeds were normal, I has some peers and seeds.. I could not figure it out.
Disclaimer: I am in no way advocating the retrieving of copyrighted material. There are legal files that can be shared and of course I am talking about those.. **And remember there are cases of The music industry and the motion picture industry suing files sharers who traffic in copyrighted material.

Hi guys,
I'm having so much problem getting my bittorrent service to download at high speed.
Got myself a new modem (Siemens Speedstream 4200) and running it with my Belkins wireless router. I checked the ports and their are "Closed". So that is a good start, i tried the NAT test within Azureus but reply comes back "NAT Error". Speed of download is not even 1k. I'm running mcafee firewall but i have open the ports so it can download.
I have been looking all over the internet trying to work out the problem but no good.
I get yellow and red faces.
Please help

I don't know Azureus or what a Nat Error is. I use a Netgear router, BitTornado as my torrent program, and Windows XP & it's firewall.
What do yellow and red faces in that program mean?
So to try and figure this out, a few suggestions.
Your router is a complete firewall all itself - it is a hardware firewall. McAfee is a software firewall. They are different but do the same thing. McAfee might have more bells and whistles like warnings of an attempt, but still you can only run your router as a firewall and would be OK. For now just to help diagnosis, shut off McAfee completely so it is out of the way and no concern. You can turn it back on later if you want.
So now you need to "port forward" (open the ports) in your Belkin firewall router that correspond to the ports used in Auzrius. But I can only tell you with a Netgear Router (easy).
I don't know if Azureas uses BitTorrent's "standard" ports or not. Ports 6881-6899 (or up to 6999 in later versions I read for the later versions). With BitTornado I can configure it to use any ports, I am not stuck with those and none are ever dictated to me. I can use in example, 17112 or 45345 or 53345 or 27234 - or a range around those, though only one is needed and not a range. - whatever ports you want to use up to 60000. Now, I would not use any below 10000 either.
OK, why mention about what ports to use - because I have read that some ISPs are blocking those ports that BitTorrent uses, just because they know BitTorrent uses them and doesn't want to have any hassles.. That is why I recommend using a Torrent program where you can configure the ports it uses.
Remember that when you start out downloading/uploading, you will only get 1 KB/s for a while, until you have enough material and are recognised in your circle as to having enough to start sharing with, then your upload speed will increase a bit, and your download speed will start increasing, but it might take 10 minutes to get going.
But you said yourself, your router's ports are all closed - open those that correspond to the one's Azureas is using.

biggermac: i have tried all that you mention but still no good. I'll give you a more indepth insight to what i have done.
I have disable all firewalls (router, modem, mcafee and windows). I have forward the neccessary port that Azureus uses but still no good, i also followed the guide on how to config Azureus from portforward.com.
I'm thinking it could be the modem that is not config correctly, a mate has mention some about setting up a private ip for my pc (i tried that but the setting conflicts with my ISP).
I have a DHCP connection but set my router to a static ip to the modem. What can i do to make my bittorrent to download again properly, at the moment i dont even get 1k of download speed (always 100 - 600 bs).
Do you know where i might be able to get a guide on how to setup my modem. I have a Siemens Speedstream 4200 modem, Belkin wireless router (F5D7231au4), Windows XP and a standard PC that is capable of the job.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi everybody, I am new to the forum (and internet as well). Here is my problem:
My torrent downloads (Azureus) have been working fine until 1-2 months ago, they were dramatically reduced to max of 8 KB/s. I am using a University LAN connection, so they have probably closed all the ports reserved for bittorent. No matter which port I entered (i.e. 6881-6999, 16881 - 16999, 49xxx - 65xxx), I always got a yellow light. Having read the earlier posts, I believed this to be a NAT problem, however, I can't do anything with the router settings since I'm not in the admin team. So I tried looking for another port range hoping that my uni hasnt closed or limited yet and eventually ended up using port 24941. I'm not even sure if BT even works with that port (me a novice), but seemingly, it does. Green light appears all the time...although not much change to the speed. What is happening!? I'm so tired of waiting for a dl days after days and dont know what to do anymore. Any help, any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot.
Quan.

Can someone please tell me how to open the ports, i went the the following website (http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?) to check my ports status. It all came back stealth instead of open or close. Stealth is bad, but where as open or close is good.
Please tell me how to open the port so i can continue downloading my torrents. I have switched from using Azureus to Bitlord now. Just giving it a go. The ports that i am trying to open are between 6881-6889, like i have said in my previous post i dont not have any firewall running.
Is there a guide out there that i can read to configure Bitlord to run properly?

i am currently using bitcomet to download torrents, but my downloads are not as fast as i would like them to be. So, i tried switching to BitTornado. i kept getting the yellow light so i checked my port status at www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 and found that my ports were closed. then, i opened bitcomet and the ports were open. Does anyone know why it does this? Because i want to try other clients, but bitcomet seems open and close my ports depending on wheter it is open or not.
