hmm..I been readin this thread for some time now and i seem to have similar problems yet nothing helps.....
btw i tried bittorrent first but that was before i got the nat error fixed, i got same dl speeds and once i even got 80 kb/s and my heart skipped a beat.
-pent IV 3.4 ghz 2gig ram (so my cpu is outoff the question in terms of the problem hehehe)
-winxp, firewall off. have norton firewall but added ports and so its fine (atleast it doesnt tell me its stealth)
-ports closed from test, and forwarded for lynksis router
-azureus 2.2
-comcast
-no nat error and i have green lights most of time
-i set global up to 31 bc from my test (bigermac's link) i had near ~300up and ~2mb down
-healthy torrents (~20seeds, ~100+ leechers)
now my question is, y the fudge are my dl's only going 10-20 kb/s (i dont dl more than 3 at a time and seed more than 2)sometimes i get a spike of 35 kb/s should i not have faster rates given that i have comcast? now bigermac, u seem to be the most knowledgeable in this scenario, could u pls explain? appreciate it

OK Cybershot, I will tell you what to try. But I am just repeating myself from posts that are not too old I've posted already. I only say this because I know how this program works and not Azureas. Try BitTornado. I am unsure if Azureas can do this, but with BitTornado you can set to use any port or range of ports (you only need one port BTW). You have to get away from ports 6881 to 6889 just because they've become known as BitTorrent ports and some ISPs screw with those ports, so who knows? I was using ports in the 17000 range but someone mentioned high up ports might be faster so I am now using some ports in the 54000 range. I don't see anything different but I only now tried it once. Also because of my Netgear router, I cannot designate the same ports as ports forwarding for two computers in my home network, each has too have their own specific to it, and since I use an old 600 Mhz P3 for getting torrents sometimes so as not to tie up my main computer I must use different ports in each copy of BitTorrent on each computer. Again, only one port is needed you do not need to set a range. (To use just one port, in the "start" and "end" range fields enter the same port, both in your torrent program and in your router)..
However, BitTornado has the same "light" system - you say you see green lights most of the time, well in BitTornado yellow means firewall problem almost always and if it turns green you are not firewalled.
BitTornado is highly configurable, as I suspect Azureas is. Your upload speed directly affects how fast you can download - it is written that way (the torrent scheme in general - it's the way it works, so that people who do not want to share upload bandwidth are punished with rotten download speed). If you read one "official' report on the "max upload" setting for a torrent program it says set it to 90% of your real max. But I always read from before to set it to 80% of your real max. Someone recently chimed in that 75% is even better, and you know what, I agree, because I have messed with it enough to see if I pop the setting down a tad from 80% it seems to give me a few more KB/s.
Now also, remember, there are two ways to report speed - a large B = bytes and a small b = bits. ISPs still use the bits standard (which everyone should use) as in Comcast download speed is 4000 Kbps. Bit torrent programs use bytes not bits, as in 4000 Kbps = 500 KB/s. If you write kb/s (and not KB/s) technically that is bits not bytes, and 8 bits = a byte.
OK back to upload speed, all Comcast Customers are going to be 400 Kbps upload and 4000 download by the end of the year. I already am. You have 300 up and 2 Mbps down (2 Mbps = 2000 Kbps). So I am unsure why your speeds are off of what I thought all customers of Comcast would get, but no matter.. I was previously at with Comcast 250 upload and 3000 download. Download speed doesn't matter you'll never reach either of those two marks. BUT, Upload speed does matter. Your 300 max up max you say you have should set be set in your torrent program to say 75% of that, so that is what, 225 Kbps, so that = about 28 KB/s...
Also - do not use any setting that says "automatic" or any other setting that you do not set a limit.
Yes you should do better than 35 KB/s (280 Kbps). Depending on the torrent, I get 75 KB/s (600 Kbps) or even 125 KB/s or better for a while anyway (1 Mbps or 1000 Kbps). When I had my old slower 250 up Comcast I even got 2 MB/s at times... And are you waiting for quite a while before determining your speed? For example I might not get my best speed until at least 1/3rd or 1/2 of the way into the download. But still after 15 minutes I am doing better than your 35 KB/s for sure.
BTW my P3 does not seem to get as good speed as my Athlon. It is still much better than you are getting with your fast modern computer, so something is up for sure.. I run Windows 98 SE on the P3.
Oh yea, try turning off "UPnP". In both your torrent program and in your router if it is set to ON in there.
And "Max uploads" - not "max upload speed" should be kept at 4, or move up to 5 or 6, depending. I've used 7 on the Athlon and it does well, but on the P3 4 seems better.

wow lots-o-info. thx. so wat ports would u recommend? right now ill try the 54000 and the upnp settings. ill just cross my fingers, o and i just got an 100kb/s dl for like 1 minute then it went back to 20-30.....im so confused......ill get back to u later
and yes, most of the torrents i leave over night and are still the same speed when i wake up.
i can also choose the starting port in azureus. so ill do that too
now if those 2 things dont help....any ideas?

Cybershot - one of the most important things is setting the "max upload speed" in the t0rrent program you use. Hopefully Azureas has a place to set this and not judt an "automatic" setting, even if it can read your upload capability an set it accordingly. Set too low and it thinks you are cheating with your upload bandwidth and rewards you with sluggish downloads. Set too high and the torrent program shows down somehow as it needs that extra bandwidth to do something (I don't know what) - that is why I say set max upload speed in your torrent program to 75% of what you know to be your real max upload speed.
I also suggest if you still have problems you try BitTornado. Azureas is a very advanced torrent getting program, but I have seen a few posts claiming problems, at least with certain versions. BitTornado has some "automatic" and "no limit" settings too but you can opt out of them and set the numbers, and you should most definitely do this.

well when u say max up speed....theres two things i can do. in options there is a max global up speed, which is all the uploads added together and thats my max, and with each individual torrent i can set it manually. right now i see it says unlimited b/c im assuming thatthe global setting will take care of it (the upload speed usually doesnt go higher than 10-15 for me)
btw the upnp and different ports didnt help, now insteat of 20-30 im gettin 20-35 dl speeds..... :(
im so confused.....i guess ill try bitornado
i also had problems with the newest azureus, it kept giving me nat error so i went the the 2.2 and im good. but i will try bitornado b/c it seems to be more 'fool-proof' than azureus.
now if with bitornado i still dont get better downloads....suggestions? or am i, as I would say, fucked?
btw, there are 2 bitornado dl's, the stable and the expirimental. which do u recommend?

Try it (BitTornado). If you get a green light, then that is over half of the battle.
Talking anbout settings uploads for all torrents, I don't know what that means, BitTornado's default page has two settings - "max upload speed" and "max uploads" (or max connections). These settings you can change and they'll immedialtey effect BitTornado. You may not see an imediate speed difference, but it went into effect. Max upload speed will probably be set to automatic in BitTornado - change this to either slow or fast DSL/cable, then you can monkey with the upload speed numbers (75% of your true max, right?).
Any other settings you change on other pages will not go into effect until you close BitTornado and open it again when you click on a torrent. So if you set, for example, port 24515 as the port on another page, you have to close the program and open it again - hopefully it is easy if you save the torrent file to your hard drive to be able to click on it it again after you shut it down.
Also this should be logical because your download speed depends on upload speed, but one guy couldn't understand his slow speed and it turns out he was doing multiple torrents at one time - do one download at a time. If you want to try two at a time at some other time OK (which I do not recommend) but for now only do one.
I am using this version: BitTornado-0.3.8-w32install.exe

have looked everywhere and tried so many things, and I hate to start a new thread but what the heck. First thing, I HAVE NO ROUTER. Everyone keeps saying forward your ports through your router or firewall. I don't have a router and I don't have a firewall at all. XP's firewall is shut off and I don't have any others. Now the company I am through for internet does not have a firewall either and they have tried disabling and enabling NAT and I still get the same things. My problem? Well, I try to use Azureus and my downloads are around 5k. Sometimes go higher but very rarely. I never get green smileys. When I try to test any port at all it says NAT error. I have tried re-installing Jave and an older version of Azureus. Same thing. I have also tried other bittorrents and still have slow downloads. I have adjusted my speeds. I am going crazy and rambling. Anyway, I have tried a lot of things and no luck. I can use Limewire with speeds up to 50k. Any suggestions? PLEASE!!! Even a hahahah you are so screwed buddy would at least tell me where I am at in this situation.

(yea im doin mulitple dl's, im dl 2-3 and seeding 2....so that may explain it.)
y just now did one of my torrents that ive been dling for a bout a day now just spike to 150 kb/s and the others go to 5-10?
im not complaining but i just want that for the otheres as well.
OH SNAP! I JUST REACHED 200!!! WHOA!!! WHAT DID I DO?! the other is at 4.....huh....i have a strange comp
given that i just saw what my dl speed is capable of i might stay with azureus a while and stick to only 1 dl at a time... (wat about seeds?)
Its also wierd cuz my max up for that torrent is 18 and its only uploading about 7 kb/s but im dling at like 190kbs......pretty strange....

magaroth, if u dont have any firewall or anything and u get "NAT error" in azureus, then u may have to go to ur modems own settings to forward ports. when i get "NAT error" it refers to my modem; and when i forward the port in my modem i dont get "NAT error" i get an "OK" instead.
so try this, to see if it takes u to ur modem's settings:
1) go to Start, then Run, and type in "command" (without quotes of course). hit Enter.
2) on the black DOS window that appears type "ipconfig". hit Enter.
3) you are going to get some info. look for the line that says "Default Gateway". To the right of it there is going to be a long number.
4) type that number (with dots and everything) into an internet web browser. hit Enter.
Did it take u anywhere (like ur modems settings) or did u just get a "no page found" error?
scottyb21, do u use windows XP? if u do, u have to forward ports on its firewall or just disable it? im confused about ur information, u say u gotta linksys router hooked up but its not in use. if its hooked up doesnt that mean its on? u also said u opened up ports. what did u open ports on?
cybershot, azureus has a Configuration Wizard that when u tell it ur bandwidth information it automatically sets up how many active downloads u can have open simultaneously.
and i noticed u said u have azureus 2.2. The latest version is 2.3.0.2 if u wanna updated.
EDIT: also when i donwloaded azureus it informed me in a pop up that if u have a firewall or router u should also open the UDP Protocol of the chosen port. the reason was that some discentralized tracking required it.

hey redscorpi I already tried that and I get no page found cuz I have no modem I am connected right to a canopy(xplornet wireless, euipment for sending and receiving signals). Anyway last night I got so ticked off I decided to see if the original dial-up would give me any problems. If it didn't then that would eliminate any problem whatsoever with my computer. WELL, guess what? No problems. No Nat error. So I called xplornet and made 100% sure that they don't have e behind any firewall/router. We then figured out that it may be my style of I.P. adress. Meaning: I have a dynamic address - always changing. When I connect I get an Internal address that stays the same for a few months. The internet however sees different ones all the time. Now if I switch to a Static I.P. then my internal AND external stay the same. SO, I am getting a Static I.P. in a few days here and if it works I will definetley let you guys know.

So it is still hooked up, but no internet is running through it...I opened the ports through my internet thing...I went to control panel, network connections, selected the internet I am using, clicked change the settings of this connetion, went to the advanced tab, clicked settings under the internet connection sharing part, and opened up the ports there...I may not have enough opened...I dunno

WELL, WELL, WELL, I had a thought and it actually worked for once. I tried everything I could think of to get my downloads to go faster with Azureus. Well, any torrent program infact. So I used to have a Dynamic address and changed it to Static. POOF!! Just like that green smileys all the time. SO if you have tried port-forwarding and everything else you can think of, including re-installing Windows, call your ISP(Internet Service Provider) and ask if you have Dynamic or Static? If they say Dynamic, ask how much more it is a month for a Static address, cuz it will cost more. For me it was $9.95 extra a month but it will be lower for others I am sure. Anyway change it and I bet it will go green. Well I am off to happily download and play games that won't boot me now. I will read these posts ever so often to try and help those that have these types of problems.

Alright, well I have a somewhat odd question... My download speed is near perfect, almost always above 350kbps, however, my upload speed is never above 40kbps. This presents a problem, as i am seeding various torrents to different people, and i can only share it at a meager 40kbps. When there are only one or two people leeching off my torrent, it is fine, but when there is, say, 15-20, they each get 2-3kbps from me. What I am basically asking is if it is possible for me to upload any faster. I am using BitTornado, and i have comcast cable with a 3.5mbps connection. I have my upload max set at 350kbps.

Well snaglepus,
Here is the deal,. you may be aware of this and you may not. It sounds like you are aware. Torrent programs, including BitTornado, use KB/s (a large letter B) which = bytes. Kbps is in Bits. 8 bits = a byte. So if you see BitTornado reporting 40 KB/s upload, that is 40 x 8 = 320 Kbps upload speed..
I run a freeware program called NetMeter (not Net meter, but Netmeter) that reports anything uploading or download in speed. It can be set to either use KB/s or Kbps. I prefer Kbps, this KB/s is the stupidest thing anyone ever came up with after Kbps was so established. It confuses a lot of people. Even when you report go to higher speeds and start reporting in Mbps, like 3.5 Mbps, that is talking about bits again, not stupid bytes (3500 Kbps).
Important that you know what your true upload speed is reported to you by Comcast (I have Comcast), and also run a test at
http://www.dslreports.com/stest/0 and do a couple of them, and try one local to you, and get a better idea of your speed.
you say that your speed is good, but when downloading I get usually twice 350 Kbps most of the time, and even over 1000 kbps (1Mbps) when the seeds to peers ratio is good. Sometimes it takes 1/3rd of the way into the download to get over 1 Mbps.. Yesterday I got 1.5 Kbps for one torrent then another only got like 450 Kbps most of the way through.
Now - never use "automatic" or "unlimited". For downloads unlimited is OK I guess though I don't use it, but for uploads no. So you cannot set the upload speed in BitTornado, or any torrent program to what your true upload speed is. It needs room to do something else in. My best results are setting BitTornado between 75% to 80% of true upload speed. So I think you are being cheated with your download speed if 350 kbps sounds good to you.
Also try turning off UPnP. If you use a router turn it off in there too. The light is green I hope in BitTornado for you.

> listen mate ! what is true upload speed ? not kidding ok .
What I was getting at. perhaps not explained well, is.. OK, Comcast tells me my new speeds are 400 Kbps upload and 4000 Kbps download. But it may not be exactly that. And if it is a busy time of day and you are in a neighborhood with a lot of Comcast cable Internet subscribers, you have to share the bandwidth (unlike DSL) and so up speed might only be 320 Kbps.
Anyway just run a few tests during different times of the day at the website listed above in my other post, or at other testing facilities, and get a true upload rate, not just one they tell you you've got. ---> This is because it is so important yo get this setting right - if you set the upload rate too high in the torrent program, your download speed will suffer just as if you set it too low. So set the torrent program to 75% - 80% of your Internet upload speed/
For me, Comcast says I have 400 upload speed. And that seems to be pretty accurate after tests and during slower times of the day certainly. SO in BitTornado, 400 Kbps (400 Bit Per Second)is the same as 400 divided by 8 = 50 KB/s (50 K Bytes Per Second). So If 50 KB/s is by real or true upload speed, I need to set BitTornado where it says upload speed to at least as low as 80% of that. That would be 40 KB/s. I have also, through just experimenting, figured out that I should kick it down a bit more than 40 Kbps, so I generally use about 36 - that is what I enter there in the BitTornado default where it says upload speed or upload max. Separately, there is also a box underneath that for maximum uploads, 4 to 6 is good there. I think this is the same as connections that other P2P programs use, and the same as "connections" I use in Usenet, but not sure. I've used the 7 setting there too, but I am pretty fast, 4 would be good for the slower speeds maybe 5.

i have a couple of questions that NEED to be answered PLEASE PLEASE after reading about 22 pages of this thread.
1) i DO NOT have a router, so how do i port forward. can someone find me a guide or something on how to postforward with azureus, the guides i already read are pretty confusing. so if anyone could give me some insight on how to portforward, it would help a lot.
2)i always have a yellow smiley when i donwload. its not my computer or interent connection, i just have a yellow smiley. how do i get a nice GREEN one? does it have something to do with my ports and opening them?
3) and finally, everytime i do a port test i get a NAT ERROR. how do i stop this?
someome PLEASE reply i really need help after reading all this, it still hasnt helped me. i really want to increase my d/l speed so if someoone could please answer those 3 questions for me it would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot in advance.
