ian1983,
when you say 'get away with this', internet ip's and languages do not change over sea ;) It should work fine, most people just have problems finding out the place to open your ports.

ian1983,

are you typing this into internet explorer? you need to have http:// in front of the IP also, no www.

like this

http://192.168.1.1

or whatever your routers IP address is there. remember, your routers IP is your default gateway.

also, if you do not have a ROUTER, and are using HUB or SWITCH this will not work, it will not work with software firewall either, like norton's personal firewall. You can do it, you just need to follow diffrent steps then the ones I posted. The ones I posted are for router configuration, not software firewalls.

ok so I guess I have a hub...(rca modem with an ethernet connection to my x-box and the usb connection to the PC)...is this why I can't bring up the "Default Gateway" address in Internet Explorer? so then what do I do...anybody? ... Also I'm running windows XP, but the firewall is not turned on, and I also have Norton's Internet Security, without the firewall on... Still though my download rate is low (20-40 KiB/s)... my upload rate is almost always 25 KiB/s or lower... is this normal... I have a cable connection advertised at 3mb...I know cable is notorious for fluctuating d/l and u/l rate but I'm sure that it is not this low... any help would be appreciated...
One last thing... I run Norton's Internet Security and although I do not have the firewall up it does sometimes block ip adresses that it says might be trying MSSQ_STACK_OVERFLOW ... I have a suspicion that these ip adresses are just people associated with the bit torrent i'm D/L & U/L from/to, but the infrequency of the blockage makes me wonder if it really is someone trying to hack into my computer... any information would be appreciated... thanks

OK - go easy on me here... I may not know what I'm talking about as I'm new to BitTorrent.
I've opened the ports as suggested but my download spped is way slower than my upload speed. It averages 0.5KiB/s. My download will take about 2 months at this speed. I'm currently connected to 1 peer but this has been 2 peers on occasion. Is this slow because the other person's machine is slow or have I ballsed something up. I'm using a Mac running OS 10.3.3, have ADSL and use a Netgear router. Any help appreciated!

Almost every message i read about NAT-error/yellow faces/slow downloads is about portforwarding in router or firewall, but if this shit happens without router/3rd party/WinXp firewall connected/installed/enabled? Completely naked so to speak! What could be the problem then? Also used different BT clients: BitTorrent,TorrentStorm, Azureus. All bloody fuckin slow downloadspeed 5-10KB/s up while 30Kb/s up (ISP 1556kbs down/512kbs up). When i use Flashget or Getright at the same moment BT clients run...kaboom...180-200Kb/s download speed. I'm a bit lost here! Any help would be great. Torrent has the potential to be a great P2P tool, but this bloody download speed has to increase soon or else "FORMAT C:\".

Follow this link to find out why opening ports can increase download speed.

Ok guys let us all who dont have any firewalls and routers solve this problem together.

I once solved this problem-I started to use Shadows client and i set Ul speed to 18 while my max is 32KB/s.
Now i have this Azureus where i can get 80 but just for a second-most of the time its below 40.-Dl rate is too damn variable!!
Ive tryed changing the following settings:
-Max number of connections per torrent
-Max uploads
-Max upload speed
-Port[i had problems with 6881 but its ok now]
None of them helped.

So we really cant open any ports since we have no such thing as router can we?

Well there are 100peers 2seeds im connected to and i really doubt they are ISDN or 56k users since they dont really download 4.5GB big DVDs.Total speed is 2MB/s.

So the next thing ill try is using a Flashget or Getright while downloading.Zitniet said it helped him!
The other thing ill do is Bittorando client...but thats somehow hopeless since ive tryed 3 clients already!
What about Azureus settings?Any advice?

[my max Dl speed is 128 and max Ul speed is 32KB/s]

Hello everyone

I have a SpeedTouch home (alcatel) modem - my connection is 512k but i hardly get fast downloads with bittorrent (http i get the max). Is this router something from my end of from my isp?

I tried to follow your instruction but even I am seeing the 'page can't be displayed' thing :(

any hints?
cheers

if your getting the page cannot be displayed messege, its because one of two things..

1) you don't have a router

or

2) you are typing in your routers default IP address wrong.

well honestly I dont think it's the case of writing it wrongly as I tried more then once, both via re-typing and copy and paste

as for the router, how can I make sure I don't have one? sorry for my lack of knowledge...

I don't know how old this post is, but it showed up on google when i searched for bit torrent downloads. It was just what i was looking for.

My Bittorrent downloads are going extremley slow. I don't know why, but i definatley followed all the steps possible for forwarding my ports. My only question was after I was done doing all that, nothing changed in my download speed. I disabled the XP firewall, and forwarded all my ports to accumulate faster download speeds than just stupid 1 kb/s and 4 kb/s. I know movies are supposed to be a little longer in general, but they are not supposed to be taking 3775 hours! haha :). I did have one question though, concerning camdog...am i supposed to be using 6881-6889 like in the example? Because if I am, I'm still getting slow download speeds. If I'm not, what number ports should I use? I don't know what to do from here...

Any help would be appreciated!

-Thanks

Is there any other way to increase download rate on bittorrent PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone help!!!!!!!!!!

come on cam-dog - can you help us or not? Or are you only going to answer people who try to open ports even though they don't have a router? It's a very technical operation for a lot of people and we appreciate you posting advice on opening ports but other people are asking reasonable questions and not getting answers. I'm still waiting over 1000 hours for my download to complete with no idea whether I'm doing something wrong or if the 1 peer I'm connected to is slowing me down, restricting me or perhaps is on a dial up. I have no idea. If you can help us, please do. If you can't, just let us know. Thank you

A question, I created 16 ports as per instructed, however, no luck. I just looked and my ip address is different from my default gateway address, and I've forwarded my ports based on the gateway address, is it suggested I change it to the ip address.

my up:dl ratio is still 2:1

yes Ian, they need to forward to your COMPUTERS IP, not your routers ip, thats correct, change that.

I put together some cheap ass picture to help you newbs determine if you have a router or not. hope it helps, because it took all of 10 minutes to do them up in photoshop lol.

and

hope that helps a bit

thanks for the taking the time to help out the rookies :).

As of 2day though, 1/5Kb dl, 4.9 ul, so I think I'll either spend a day on it, or do what you suggested and go inroll in a course :)

hello i have been having slow torrent speeds and then i read this thing about it and thought i should do it to. The only problem was that my roouter was a D-link router so i had a different page from the one shown and i had some extra information to fill in. It tells me to fill out these areas - i do not know what to put in them. They are as follows:

Name - This is the name referencing the special application.

Trigger Port - This is the port used to trigger the application. It can be either a single port or a range of ports.

Trigger Type - This is the protocol used to trigger the special application.

Public Port - This is the port number on the WAN side that will be used to access the application. You may define a single port or a range of ports. You can use a comma to add multiple ports or port ranges.

Public Type - This is the protocol used for the special application.
