choc....

i did as you instructed and am trying another client. i installed abc and am running it now. how do i know if i'm still being firewalled or not? i can connect to different torrents, but the color of the rows is in yellow. does that mean i'm still being firewalled? i was used to seeing the yellow 'light' in bit tornado instead of yellow rows in abc. are they the same? i am getting d/l speeds of up to 50kB/s.

ok I hope this helps some of you...it is my understanding that there are three steps to the process of forwarding your ports and and increasing your speeds. The site www.portforward.com is an excellent site to walk you thru this with a myriad of routers and their particular setups shown. But before you forward your ports, you must assign a static ip address. The instructions (link) for doing this are on the top of every routers setup page on that site. This must be done for all computers on your network or you will lose connectivity. Step 2 is to forward your ports. Again each routers instructions are on that site. Step 3 is to deal with any firewall issues you have. I will say that i found turning my built-in windows xp firewall off altogether has produced my best speeds, but even forwarding the ports here did make a difference. That decision is up to you as to security. I think many of the problems people are having with this is that they are still missing a piece of the puzzle. Going into your router settings is not enough. Also if you do not see your particular router on the site still look at the ones that are your brand and see if there is one there with a similar setup page or search for your brands router and check that site. I have found instructions on home sites as well.

One more helpful hint...unless you are METICULUS about remembering passwords do not change or assign a new password to your router setup page. If you do and you forget it, there is no one that can get you in here. Almost all router manufacturers use a universal password here and they are given on the portforward site for your particular router. Remember also that the ip address used to enter your router's setup will be obtained from going to start...run...command....ipconfig /all, it is not necessarily 192.168.1.1 as shown in the page layouts on www.portforward.com.

green, green, all green.

problem was my recently installed Vonage voip service. i'm an idiot. i didn't even think about it blocking ports even though it was connected between my cable modem and my dlink 624 router.

vonage recommends that you connect it that way, but you don't need to. you can connect it to any of the available ports on your router directly. if you don't it does the NAT instead of the router. you could log into the vonage (motorola voip) device and port forward from there, but why create more problems for yourself. connect it to your router and you're good to go.

now all that is left is finding out how to optimize my d/l speeds....

thanks everyone (choc) for your help...

deadwilly, did u check to see if you are behind a firewall? Windows xp has a built in firewall and a lot off people don't even realize they have it. You will have to open up ports in any firewalls as well as your router. Here is a link for Microsofts instructions for the xp firewall http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/ports.asp

ok the id is the name of the program your forwarding ports for, such as torrents, the public port will be the first port number you're forwarding , in this case I believe it is 6881, private port is the same 6881, port type is tcp, and host ip is your computers ip address. If you have a static ip address put that in here, if you don't I would recommend putting in 127.0.0.1 .You will need to do this for every poet u are opening, I did ten of them (6881,6882,6883,6884,6885,6886,6887,6888,6889,6890) hope this helps

Cheers chocfiend,

i dont actaully have a firewall as such!

I have NAT built into the router?

Plus XP firewall - but i will probably just disable it.

Is that all i have to do?

OK, ive just looked at my download speeds -wow!

I have just went from 3-6kbps to 30kbps! my uploads have also improved.

I only used TCP on the relevant ports - will i possibly see increased speed by selecting UDP on the ports aswell?

Or am i being greedy! :)

I give it a try and let u all know - thanks chocfiend!
