Thank You all for the port info. What a difference!!!

I am new to Bit Torrents and was initially disappointed with the download speeds. I admittedly have a weird home network set up. Motorolla Cable Modem followed by a MacSense MIH130A Router then a Dell TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Router. This grew over time.

I found opening up the ports to the IP of the Dell within the MacSense and then the ports to the IP of my laptop (G3 running Mac OS X 10.3) from the Dell as instructed allowed me to get Dowloads in excess of 100KiB/s and uploads of around 25KiB/s. Before I was getting down of maybe 15 and up of 25. Now I can get a full one hour episode in a couple of hours instead of two over night runs.

On a side note: I was initially annoyed with suprnova.org as it seemed none of the links worked (ie after clicking would just load a window fill of binary gobbledy guck). If you look in the lower left corner at the link URL as you mouse over the link you want and then type that into the Bit Torrents Open URL window then the download works fine (pain in the butt but at least it works). Other sites (like torrents.co.uk) seem to work fine by clicking on links so I think it is an IE MacOSX problem with certain server types. Hope this tidbit is helpful to other frustrated newbies.

RE: skcor3atg

My Router was different than those listed too and after some surfing around I gathered and used the following settings:

Name - Torrent
Trigger Port - 6969
Trigger Type - TCP
Public Port - 6881-6889
Public Type - TCP

In addition, I had to enter the IP address to apply this to which would be the IP address assigned to your computer by your router, not the one assigned to your router by your ISP. I am not an expert at this stuff but it worked for me and I hope it helps.

In the case anyone is interrested in how i solved my Azureus "NAT-error/yellow faces/slow download" problem (see message 10 April 2004).

-formatted my C: drive
-reinstalled WinXP pro (also Norton AV2004 and Tiny Personal Firewall, i wanted to know if these suckers were guilty)
-installed the Java runtime engine
-installed Azureus

No NAT-error! Jooohooo! Download speed went through the roof 200KByte/s and lots of green faces (Hehe) with my cable gateway router still connected (just forward port 6881 for inbound TCP protocol. Read other messages on how to).

My conclusion: Windows fucked up again! (uninstalling my network card didn't solve the problem. As uninstalling Norton AV2004 and TPF did not and disconnecting my cable gateway router did not.)

Ofcourse dont directly start formatting your drives...only as a last ressort if nothing described in this thread works for you. There are several websites to test if your port 6881 is open.

In my case i had no Firewall installed, no Router connected, WinXP firewall diabled, reinstalled my network card a few times, i was able to download at 1-4KB/s and upload at 20KB/s, had NAT-error, had always yellow faces and could download with GetRight at 180KB/s at the same moment.

Azureus is a great P2P tool. Needs lots of improvements, but i believe there will be soon...

Can someone clarify something for me
Connection speed of a 56k, is that B or b (8 B(ytes) to a b(it)).
So a 128k would be
and a 512k.....

I'm looking at some peoples connection speeds and their getting 250KB/s, which is a meg every damn 4 seconds. At the moment, I'm getting 11.1KB/s down, which is a meg every 100 seconds. That would be most of you have a 2megbit connection (give or take).
I seem to have tweaked with my upload recently and my download is much healthier now :) (although nothing compared to your lots).
BTW, if you are having NAT problems with a download, try this site I found recently
http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl

ian,

when companies promote their offers for high speed internet, they usually do this in megaBIT (thats like it sounds). Keep in mind there are 8 bits in a byte, so the common misconseption is that a 3 megaBIT connection from comcast is 3 megs a second, which would be about the size of an MP3 song every second.

BUT in truth, you need to take that number and divide by 8 to get your MAX download connection speed in bytes.

In this case a comcast 3 megabit connection would allow you to download at around 375k a second, or a meg every 2.7 seconds.

same applies to DSL, and how they promote their speeds,

1.5 megabit a second would be around 185k a second, or a meg every 5 1/2 seconds.

hope that clarifies some things..

on a side note, when looking between the wireless networks, the 802.11b and the wireless G, here are some things to consider.

802.11b (the cheaper setup) transfers files at 11 megabit a second. If you are on high speed internet from comcast, you are at 3 megabit a second. YOUR INTERNET AT TOP SPEED ON BEST OF DAYS is only taking up 3/11ths of your available wireless connections transfer rate.

So in going up to the wireless G network, it goes to 54 megabits a second. at that point your internet would be using 3/54ths of your available wireless connection transfer rate.

Where you see the diffrence is when you are transfering large files or many files from one computer on your network, to another, wirelessly. If you are not doing that, then think about investing in the cheaper set up, 802.11b

Hi Zub7,

I think everything you need to know about getting better download speeds is already pointed out in this forum thread (except for every brand of gateway router/firewall). Visit this site http://bt.degreez.net/firewalled.html and read why it is important to open port 6881 for inbound TCP (for Azureus, other BT clients use port 6881-6989 or 6881-6999). Visit also this site http://dessent.net/btfaq/ and read a great bittorrent FAQ.

I suggest you start testing the BTclient without gateway router/firewalls installed (including WindowsXP firewall and 3rd party firewalls). If you get good download speeds/no NAT error/lots of happy green faces then your problem is 100% firewall/router/ISP(proxy) related. If it's not working then i suggest reinstalling your networkcard. And after that only as a last ressort "format C:" (this had to be done in my case).

Do you already have Azureus? No then visit http://azureus.sourceforge.net/index.php for this great P2P tool.

If you use Azureus you actually can see where your downloadspeed per torrentfile is coming from. It does not all depend on portforwarding. Even if your port 6881 is open you still can get downloadspeeds of 3KB/s. This may be the case when there are only a few seeders or peers. Maybe the pieces you need to download are not available at the moment (0KB/s), while others are still downloading from your torrent. If you set your upload speed to high then there is no bandwidth left for basic communication between your BTclient and tracker/peers. This means that other new pears cannot connect to you and therefor cannot share there upload capacity with you (give you better downloadspeed). BTclients like Azureus give you more info on what is going on, so after some experimenting you'll find the best settings.

Really it takes a few minutes before all potential leechers find you and the "piece traiding" starts off.

Zub7,

Correction: "...then your problem is 100% firewall/router/ISP(proxy) related." -> leave the "ISP(proxy)" part out of this. If it doesn't work it still can be related to ISP(proxy) settings. If you have a "Working BTClient"-friend where you can test your PC then your ISP maybe the problem. Somewhere in the FAQ i mentioned you can find info on Proxy settings.

count me in for the alliance of the unfirewalled unroutered connections downloading at 2k/s
i forwarded the ports anyway, and they say i'm firewalled still on bittornado.
NATcheck says: Fail!
Unable to connect. This likely means you need to adjust your port forwarding configuration, or there is no client running on that port.

Now what the hell is wrong with my comp? or should i just join the alliance of format c:\?

I'll discharge my cauliflower all over that lettuce patch!

haha, its nothing that a format will solve. For those of you who are not getting better speeds, contact your router manufacture and have them walk you through port forwarding. Or search google for '(yourrouterhere) port forwarding' and see what you get. This tutorial was meant for someone with a bit of router knowledge already, and understands that routers are very similar, they just use diffrent names for the same thing. This tutorial is for newer linksys routers. And I bet that 90% of you having problems are using a hub or swith, or have windows firewall disabled, or enabled and not forwarding ports correctly.

If you are hell bent on downloading from Torrent, its best to use a hardware firewall, i recomend you go buy one.

Great advice, but not complete.
Here is what I did to get from 20kBps to 100 kBps in Azureus:
First from 20 to 40 by changing to a different cable, the old one looked good but testing on www.speedtest.nl showed there was something really wrong, only 30 to 50 kBps where 103 was possible.
Then changing the uploadspeed to 20 kBps and put max. connections to 30 and max uploads to 10. Finally the portforwarding in my router had to be done in my modem too. Now the speed is very constant at 95 to 105 kBps.
Hope this will help for some of you.

Well, I don't know if it'll work for anyone else, but I've been trying to get our bit torrent to work worth a damn for the longest time. Finally, just for kicks, I changed clients to a program called ABC. my downloads went from 4 up to 105 in seconds. it doesn't always stay that high, but its one heck of a difference. I'm going to try Azurus (hope I spelled that right) next. I'll let you know if there is any difference between those too.

By the way, I did the port forwarding and all that mess, but it didn't seem to help me any. I do thank CamDog for the thorough explination though. I don't know my way around computers too much, and I was able to do everything he explained, so thanks bro.

I am using a ADSL line 2048/256 and had some serious problems with speed.

I looked into the router/port problems in order to open ports 6881 and over, but imagined this woulden't be interesting in my case, as I only have a adsl modem connected to my phone-line by a splitter.

However, this modem turned out to be a router, so I identified the model and went to www.portforward.com for instructions.

And now, everything works out just fine.

So, just to say it, an ADSL modem, is (in my case anyway)also a router, that can be accessed and mended to your best abillities.

What kind of settings should i use for AZuerus. SOMEONE HELP OUT PLEASSSEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
