NOTE-----------This is not a Tut. this is for people like me who followed numerous guides word by word and could not get it to work.-------------NOTE
I used XBOXHDM 1.9 Softmodinstaller deluxe 2.0 ( side note- i never installed a softmod on my xbox just used splinter cell exploit to get to the softmod installer menu that way i could have acess to the box via FlashFXP i used the sofmod installer to make a back up of the eeprom, it told me where i could find it and thats the one i used to upgrade the HD)
Ok, i had a lot..A LOT of trouble figuring out how to upgrade my hard drive. I finally figured it out and thought i would leave some tips. If you are continually getting error message 6 like i was here are some things to check...
I switched and used a lower version softmod installer. (SID 2.0)
be sure your typing just the letter "y" after typing lockhd -a
If it wont lock and says because of security enabled restart XBoxhdm and go to option 4 locking/unlocking with dos tools. type atapwd and unlock using master password ( you had to attempt to lock it with linux tools option 3 in order for the master password to be XBOXSCENE...remember all caps!). After you unlock with the master password, once again start up with dos locking/unlocking tools and type 'hdunlock" lock it with the eeprom password that you wrote down( i got my eeprom password from xboxhdm, not configmagic) after that turn off your comp switch the jumper to CS(cable select) and try it out.
Another note, if it works then when you pwer on your xbox it should be the normal xbox dash. use the softmod you used to upgrade the hard drive and install it first. dont try and switch softmod installers untill after you have modded it. ( it gave me error 21 when i tried to use a different softmod installer than the one i used to upgrade the HD)
Well hope this helps and Good Luck!!

can someone provide a list of newer hds that will work in the xbox, this list is from 2005, my current xbox has 250gig, i was thinking about going with a 500 gig, the prices are so good ($109) delivered!!!!

Just follow these instructions, and using this method you will not need to do anything to your original hard drive which means that if anything does go wrong you will still have an xbox.
Necessary Equipment:
1) xboxhdm 1.9 (Found at xbins? in the directory: /XBOX/Operating Systems/linux/distributions)
2) Torx 10 And Torx 20 Screwdrivers - To Open XBOX
3) A Spare/Blank PC Hardrive
4) FTP Program (AceFTP, SmartFTP etc.)
5) A blank CD-R/W and A CD Burner
Steps:
1. On your xbox's evox dashboard go to system utils and select backup. While your waiting for that to finish, extract all files in xboxhdm 1.9 to your PC'S hard drive and open up the folder 'linux'. In that folder is a folder called 'eeprom'. Once the backup is complete, on your PC run the desired FTP program and access your xbox. Go to E:\ backup_linux\ and download a file called 'eeprom.bin' to the xboxhdm\linux\eeprom folder of on your PC?s hard drive. Then go to the root of your xbox and download the full folders of C:\ and E:\ to your PC's hard drive to the xboxhdm\linux folder and overwrite the ones already there.
2. Now in the root of xboxhdm is a file named 'make-iso-win'. You must run make-iso-win and wait for it to finish once it has finished. Now burn the .iso which was created to a blank cd-r/w using Nero or alcohol, dvddecrypter etc. When burning is finished shutdown pc.
3. Take out all other hard drives and put in the hard drive you wish to make an xbox hard drive and set it to be the primary master. Boot up your PC and as it is loading press whatever button to enter your BIOS setup and set your PC to boot from CD. Now reset your PC and put the cd-r/w with the .iso you created on it, in the cd/dvd drive. You should be given a list of options.
4. Choose Option 1 (by typing ?1?) and press enter to boot VGA console with xbox-drive utilities (default). Type ?xboxhd? when it asks you for a login. Another list of options will show up, choose option 1 again (the one that says ?Build a new Xbox HD from scratch?) and it will begin to format and write the partition table etc. If you put your C:\ and E:\ onto the CD then when it asks you about them type yes and when it asks you if you would like an F select yes, it is all pretty self explanatory. Now quit and reboot your PC. If this worked you now have a brand new nearly-usable xbox hard drive.
5. Now for locking the hard drive. When it boot from the cd again, this time type ?3? and hit enter to boot linux with locking/unlocking utilities. Next, type in ?lockhd -a?. It will now search for the eeprom on the CD and will automatically lock the hard drive. Now turn off the PC and take out the hard drive when it has finished locking.
Now put it back in your Xbox and load up and have fun!
If you can't figure out how to burn the cd properly in Nero or whatever, don't worry, i NEVER do it properly lol, so just use the burn feature in DVD Decrypter and it'll burn the linux.iso in the proper bootable format for you to use it. Also, if your HD is OVER 137 gigs, you'll need to format the remaining space with UnleashX for it to be available once you're finished the upgrade.
Edit - To save some people from buying a harddrive that isn't lockable and therefore wasting their money, please visit this link for a list of lockable and therefore Xbox compatible harddrives - http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/modules.php?...dDrives[/quote]

It will not work with your xbox, nor can it be coerced into working. Sorry

Hello. I'm new at softmodding but I have been able to get XBMC and some other apps (evoX, unleashX) on the original hdd.
My problem now is that my hdd is too small for all the stuff I wish to put on the xbox.
So, I recently bought a new hdd: a Western Digital WD2500BB
I've read many tutorials on how to install this new hard drive (and for now I don't care about getting the memory after 137gb), but I'm wondering..
Is there any way to upgrade the hdd on my softmodded xbox without also having to open up my pc?
Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Well, actually I recently sold my PC and I now have a Mac. I've been finding ways around using the usual PC apps for softmodding, but I couldn't find a way to get around this one...
until now.
Thanks for your help, cus I was pretty stumped on that one!!!!

I would certainly try it. You're unlikely to damage anything should it fail.

If you read the tutorials I've written (Click on my name), the process is clearly described, including pics.
Quote:
* Once you successfully FTP the console, you'll need to find the eeprom file. It's located in E:\Udata\2xxxxxxxxxx\0000000000000\Backup.
* Copy this file across to your computer and open 'LiveInfo'. Open the eeprom file in LiveInfo and ensure that the serial number matches the serial number found on the sticker beneath your Xbox console

It should. You may have to modify some steps to suite your personal needs or possibly reinstall all mods, games, etc. Backup using ftp beforehand to ensure a smooth upgrade process.

first of all, this helped me more than i could ever explain, "be sure your typing just the letter "y" after typing lockhd -a". i wasnt reading it and assumed i had to type like all previous yes/no's.
secondly, speaking of not reading, i didnt read all 29 pages so if this has been covered kill me or re-direct me, please...
i have a softmodded xbox. i setup a new 160gig hdd with xbhdm and installed it and loaded the game save and yay! now, my dvd drive is terribly bad. an old samsung that is on its last legs. it took many tries to boot the gamesave.
i ended up deleting my dash somehow and had to again format the 'C' drive with xbhdm. its locked and loaded with the contents of 'C' and 'E' from my softmodded original hdd.
my question...
since my dvd drive doesnt seem to want to read any more discs is there ANY way to load the MA gamesave without the disc? i also have my entire softmodded xbox hdd backed up. could i put that on my new drive and just turn the xbox on and boot evox?
it's not working that way now, but i hoping there was a way hidden behind someones eager-to-help lips.
thanks.

Don't you need a new EEPROM for the xbox hard drive when using this tutorial since the EEPROM and the ORIGINAL (not new) hard drive are married? thanks
