Hello everybody, I am hoping you guys could give me some advice, last year, about this time of the year I built a PC with the specs below with the excellent help of some of you guys on the pc building thread. The PC has been running like a dream all year, no problems and really performing with a "more than the sum of its parts" kinda feel. However the time has come where the new games are gonna put a bit of pressure on it so i'm looking to use the overclocking potential that the system has.

First off I'm about to order a better cpu cooler, its only the stock fan at the mo i'm looking at the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme. Seem like a good choice to you guys?

I don't wanna go nuts with the cpu overclock, i've read its easy enough to get a 3.6 out of it, just jack the CPU FSB to 400MHz and its done. Just have to make sure its colled properly with a decent air cooler.

So my questions, if you would be so kind to help me, are....

Is this how simple it is with the E8400? No need to change the memory timings etc?

Can you guys think of anything else I could do to get an extra bit of grunt out of it?

i have the e8400 at 3.8 atm. i also have the 120 extreme excellent cooler btw. So yes if your going to purchase that cooler its more than enough to get you through wat ever clocks you choose to do.

On another note. I could not get my cpu to 3.6 in the beginnig due to my memory settings being on auto would not take. I was told to change those settings to fit my memory speed. Once i did that i was able to hit 3.6 not problem.

So after you set to cpu to 3.6

set the performance enhance = standard

and then set the MCH Frequency latch and the memory multiplier to the setting that matches your ram speed 800mhz and you should be fine.

I was going by what i saw on this http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=717&p=1

Does that all make sense? These guys are using DDR2 ram too, so can I just set the same timings as these guys or are the different brands with different optimal timings?

That works.

i wouldn't change the standard timing control i would leave that all on auto.and everything else below that on auto.

The robust graphics booster not sure what that does but i was able to set mine to extreme.

And the performance enhance i was able to set to turbo. Cant do extreme system wont take it.

Heres a link that should help
http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/gigabyte...ng-guide-26112/
Even though your p45 chipset is a little newer than some of these, your BIOS settings should be about the same. Their max speeds and settings might differ from yours, just use common sense and step up gradually and you should be fine.

Hello Everyone,

I have a question. What is a good program to use to test memory.

I currently have my memory up to 1128mhz stable so far. The voltage is at 2.0v that's .1v less than what there rated at.I need to know though if it stable no errors.

Thanks for the info. Turns out it was not stable. So i backed my cpu down to 3.6 and the memory to 1080mhz an everything is peachy now.

Hello, this is my first time OC'ing and I was having some trouble. I did some reading, and there was a guide that involved my processor (Core2Duo E6300) and similarly timed and same Speed ram. But my motherboard is different, MSI P-965 Platinum (MS-7238) and I am having some troubles. I can't seem to change the multiplier and some of the voltages. Here is some of the basic info:
FSB Clock: 1066MHz
FSB: 266MHz
Mutiplier: x6
Memory Timing: 400MHz
Memory Ratio: .93 (i think)
Vcore: 1.152 V
Vdimm: 1.90 V

Any help on how to get started would be appreciated. If I need to go you some more information, please tell me. Thank You.

Your multiplier will actually be 7x I believe, but shows up in the system as 6 if you aren't doing anything as a power saving feature. You do not change the multiplier to overclock, you change the front side bus speed.

Yeah, i looked in the BIOS and it is 7, but it showed up as a 6 in CPU-Z. Is there a certain voltage that relates to how much I increase FSB speed?

As far as voltages are concerned, the only ones worth worrying about or even touching is your vcore and vdimm.
Your Vdimm should match the rated voltage of your memory sticks. If it isnt now change it there.
Your Vcore is probably at stock or less. I say less because if you have a energy saving feature which knocks down your multiplyer, it probably lowers your Vcore too. I am not familiar with MSI boards to give you specifics, just trying to help with general guidelines...

As you up the bus speed you will eventually need to increase the CPU voltage, but there's no given figure, it varies from chip to chip. See how far you can get it without a voltage increase first, the Core 2s are quite good at overclocking with no voltage increases.

I only could get to 2.0GHz before having to up the voltage. The BIOS of my motherboard is the AMI (American Megatrends) if that helps at all.

What are the risks of overclocking a Q6600 and a NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS on a totally stock PC(No good cooling system or anything)?

Overheat quicker with stock cooling, less with specialized fans/ heatsinks. Risk is heat. If you watch and dont let things get too hot, there is no risk, you just wont get as good OC before your thermal meltdown...

But how do I monitor my heat? I can't go taking the covers off my computer now, I'd be in the S.H.1.T. if I did. And are there any tuts on overclocking? I'm very new. (This has been my common interest for 15 mins as of 22:43PM)

Most people around here use Everest or whatever monitoring programs comes with their installation disc of their mobo.

Depends what the stock system is. A lot of basic motherboards can't overclock quad cores because they will simply melt (literally) under the load.

Oh Yah!!! The new toys are in! Phenom II ready for torture LOL. I suppose im rather nervous about it though. I think I might let it acclimate a little longer. Especially with the headaches this beast gave me last night. UNKIND!!! Raptor HDD trouble(NEVER buy used through ebay!), Multiple freeze ups, HDD's didnt wanna boot. Yah...it was fun! Seems to be hovering around 30-35C. Cool as a sundae!!! And according to trusted sources, my cpu cooler may be on backwards! LOL

EDIT- new version of CPU-Z

Heres a little side by side comparison of phenom II and athlon 5200. Yes, im impressed, but...Somehow I was expecting a little more. Shouldnt the numbers be Twice what they were on the athlon? Or are quads still not fully supported enough for windows to know what to do with it?

Those are all mathematical tests. I'm not even sure if they are multi threaded. I don't take much stock in them because I do everything now that I did with the E6750, and the 7750 AM2+ does everything I use the computer for as good or better than the E6750 did. It's light years smoother than the Intel! Very comfortable to use too! Time for Sisoft to tweak their software for the AMDs, just like they do for the C2D, Yorkfields and Core i7, as my 7750BE at 3.22GHz is nowhere near as slow as the numbers from Sandra would indicate. I'm both Impressed and happy with the 7750's performance! I hope the new motherboard shows tomorrow!

Best Regards,
Russ

Holy cow!!! LOL. Its possible I ran the test before all proper drivers were installed LOL. Im laughing pretty hard right now. Thats what I get for running tests when im half asleep last night!
Here is the TRUE results!!! And according to task manager it utilized 100% of each core during each test!

There's nothing wrong with simple arithmetic tests for comparison but those test are clearly wrong. Try sisoft and see how it comes out.
