Back in the days before slimline PS2, there existed a nice exploit called Independence Exploit by 'anonymous author'. Sites like http://www.ps2hd.com & http://www.ps2nfo.com gave hundreds of uses for the exploit, everything from booting backups w/no modchip to copying files using ExecFTP, saving memory card to PC & playing games on HDD. Those were great times.

Then $ony discovered a way to stop the MC exploit, and built a new evil slimline PS2 for this terrible purpose. They removed the HDD altogether, and did not lower the price 1cent. After a great shortage of the PS2 @Christmas, no one could find the old FAT ps2 any longer. Only the slimline. The dirty trick was discovered, homebrew scene was devastated, and many PS2 players spit @the $ony Cerberus.

There existed a website that listed EVERY program, homebrew or not, that could run with Independence Exploit. Where does this page exist? With such a webpage, all the applications could once again be tested with this new exploit. So I have searched but all i find is--

Somewhere in this vast land of PS2 geniuses there exists The One. The Neo of PS2 slimline players. The One shall lead back to the promised land that once existed before the Independence Exploit was lost. He shall lead us to the Promised Land of PS2 gaming that exists somewhere in this world of $ony dirty tricks & scratched DVDs.

I look forward to that day....

That was very poetic, xhardc0re. Thank you. One (possibly)last question from me. I have a slimline PSTwo, Swap Magic 3.6, and a USB HDD from which I can load ELFs using SM. Is there even any point to me trying to get this exploit to work, or was I wasting my time?

The way I understood it originally, the exploit would allow me to launch programs from my MC without having to put any disc in the drive. If in fact some sort of disc is required, such as my SM disc or the Exploit Live CD, then I might as well stick with launching programs from my USB drive, no?

If the Independence Exploit worked, you could run all MC exploits including ExecFTP & WinHiip w/out anything else. Remember, an exploit is just a trigger so you can run applications off the memory card or hard drive (or USB drive in this case).
What does ExecFTP do?
Quote:
ExecFTPs v0.69 is a standalone FTP-server running on PS2. It supports access to memorycard and harddrive (not HDLoader/HDAdvance partitions ) for files like .elfs, .mp3, gamesaves, .dat, ...etc.
http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=ExecFTP_Tutorial.html
http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=tutorials.html
What is WinHiip?
Quote:
WinHIIP is a PC application for installing PS2 CD / DVD images onto a hard disk drive for use by HDLoader or one of its many derivatives including the greatly enhanced Toxic OS produced for the DMS4 Pro chip by Team Toxic.

This is exactly what I'm asking. How do I run MC exploits without anything else. Step by step:
1. I have a slim PSTwo. Let's assume the exploit is correctly installed on my MC.
2. With no disc in the drive, I turn it on.
3. ... now what? Can you fill in the rest?

Hey, hey, hey, hey, WHOA! Dude, Xhardc0re, that is just too much for me. This was just done as an alternative solution to run BACKUPS not for all the things you were able to do with the Independence Memory Card Exploit.

Oh, by the way, how do you FTP on a slim? I'll give the FTPing a go on my console(uh, without the use of my chip, duh, that'd be cheating). I need SERIOUS info on FTPing(which I think is the same as transfering from computer to PlayStation 2). I'm also thinking about trying to run Linux(if it's in ELF form) on my slim and do EVERY SINGLE THING that could have been done with the old Independence Memory Card Exploit.

And, Voxaryx, the swapping is only needed to swap from Action Replay MAX to your exploit CD with CD Loader(there's no other way to boot it if you don't have a chip) after booting the CD Loader ELF(on a CD-R or USB Memory Stick formatted so that it can be recognized by MAX Media Player), unless it's on a disc. Then you need to swap from CD Loader to Action Replay MAX(with the use of Triangle to stop the disc and retract the laser), then when Action Replay MAX stops spinning, you swap for your exploit CD(direct swap, no button pressing). After that, if you have ELFs on your disc, you can launch them directly from there. Otherwise, like in your case, if you have your ELFs on your Memory Card(in BADATA-SYSTEM), the exploit disc will allow those ELFs you put to be executed(to boot, in other words), same if you have a USB Memory Stick, but it has to be a Live CD. An Installer CD will only put your ELFs on your Memory Card, while a Live CD can be used to boot the programs(meaning it can be continuously used, unlike an Installer CD, unless you're installing the files on another Memory Card or PlayStation 2).

Also, to clear things up:

The exploit installer CD is intended to simply populate your memory card with programs, and install the exploit file (TITLE.DB). It needs to be run with a modchip or swapmagic or something - but only once, and then it is installed.

Then the disc can be discarded, or stored away for later use. Now you put in your trigger disc as specified in the TITLE.DB and the TITLE.DB loads the program named BOOT.ELF on the memory card. This can be any program of your choice but most people leave it as a bootloader/menu so they can pick any of their programs to run after the trigger disc has executed boot.elf

The LIVE CD was designed for people who dont have enough space on their memory card, or for some reason cant run the exploit (eg: ps2 slim). You need a modchip or swap magic with this - the idea is of this is not the exploit, but instead to have your BOOT.ELF, and all of your ps2 programs on the CD. Whenever you need them, you run your LIVE CD rather than booting a program off the memory card. The advantage to this is that a slimline PS2 can use it.

The LIVE CD is flexible - instead of running one of your ps2 programs, you could run the program named "exploit_install" and it will copy everything from the CD onto the memory card (providing you setup the exploit correctly in PS2 Exploit Utility beforehand).

This way you can get a double-use out of it. Some people just want the exploit installed and thats it which is why the first option is also available.

Sorry for all the waffle; I just wanted to clear some confusion.

Or CD Loader booted through MAX Media Player, which is what this guide uses to boot the Live CD on a slim PlayStation 2. Do whatever you want with it. But, I'd like Xhardc0re to try to do all the things that could have been done with the Independence Exploit and post a report so that he(and I) can confirm that this would equal that old exploit.

Ace...i just got my slimline ps2 3 days ago..and i cant begin to tell you how much knowledge i've stuffed into my head from this forum, these past 2 days. *Huge Headache* I've read MasterChu's, Yours, and Jax guides for the slimlines. *Major Headache eyes hurt seriously*. I got everything to work except cogswap...i mean i got it to work but i dont know how to use it. I read your lil short guide on how to use it if you have game cd/dvd. (Me=DVD) CAn u give me detail instructions for this part pls. I would greatly appreticate it.

P.S. I agree with hardcore, The One is out there somewhere and we need him! Your guides are awesome Ace keep up the good work! Have you been to an Oracle lately, Ace?

I'll try, but I don't think I can explain it better than that.

DVD backups in Cog-Swap:

1) Remove the piece you have put over the front lid sensor of your PlayStation 2(This thing:

2) Insert a high TOC ORIGINAL DVD-ROM game(one that has a silver base) whose size is over 4GB(you have to check on your computer, and you CANNOT use a Dual Layer DVD-ROM game, which are those that are over 4.5GB, I think).

3) Place the piece you removed from the lid sensor shown earlier back where it was.

4) Keep an eye on your screen until a yellow disc shows on the screen with "PS2 DVD-ROM" or something like that under it.

5) Once you see the yellow disc with "PS2 DVD-ROM" or similar, press X on your controller. The disc will spin again(it stops when the screen shows the yellow disc). When the disc spins, keep your eyes on your TV screen until you see the yellow disc turn purple and "PS2 DVD-ROM" or similar kind of writing change to "Use Cogswap".

6) When that change happens, swap your original with your backup.

That's the best I can do. If that doesn't help, there are two other things that can play a factor:

1) The way you burn your games.

2) The media you use.

Specify how you burn your games and the brand of DVDs you use(specify also if they're made in Japan or Taiwan, etc.).

Oh, and, what do you mean by an "oracle"?

And, thanks for the compliment.

Ok your goin to hate me for this...but as soon as i logged off after writing that message I got cogswap to work, sorry for wasting your time. I was going to edit my post, but it doesnt matter now since it's been answered. So..now that i got your attention tell me this. In your opinion of softmodded which way is better/quickest. I'm doing it the USB way, but should i take a different approach and mod the memory card. I read somewhere that once its on the memory card you dont have to load cogswap again...or something like that. I would like to hear your opinion.

P.S. And the oracle statement i made was in reference to what hardcore said early (about the whole matrix ps2 world :P)

It doesn't matter. That's what I'm here for: help you guys who have problems with my guides(even if they got it to work before I respond like you.
You still need Cog-Swap if you want to play your backups. Keep the ELF on a USB Memory Stick or your Memory Card. It's up to you. Heck, you can even use all 3 for all I know. Try them all, and stick to the one you prefer(remember that you only need 1 uLaunchELF and CD Loader disc to try them all).

Okay, now I don't know where your going with the "oracle" business. Does have something to do with "The One" who creates an exploit for the slim? I'm all mixed up here.

Oh, before I forget, even if I'm "The One" who makes the Independence Exploit derivant for slims, won't Sony try to find out who I am even if I don't reveal my name and then have them get me into legal troubles?

Ok thx. LOL i really confused you about the oracle business huh, lol. Dont worry man...its not something you catch on too when your sober xD. So lets see. I got something you may could use in your guide also then again maybe not i'll let you judge.

Ok thx to you i understand this stuff a lil better. I finally realized that cd loader can load my burnt media! Not just the elf files on my USB memory stick. So i thought to myself...hmmm instead of goin through the process of loading cogswap why not just load a burnt copy of SwapDisc itself. Although you still have to go through the swapping stages and what not, the process is a lil bit shorter. So your probably wondering now, well i got to buy the swap magic disc to burn it!! I dunno if you could burn it even if you did buy it, but who cares b/c you dont have too. I downloaded it from a torrent site...not hard to find google it. Then i just simply burnt it. Once you load up cd loader and the AR disc stop spinning just take it out put in your burned copy of swap magic and voila!!! I loaded it no problem. Well except for one...i downloaded the wrong swap magic disc...I got swap magic cd 3.6 instead swap magic dvd 3.6. So as of right now i'm goin to continue my search fore the swap magic dvd rom. I'll be on all night Ace, so post and tell me what you think.

Ok found the Dvd version 1 problem though its too big to fit on cd (1gb) meaning i have to put it on dvd. Which is a problem since cd loader is on the usb device not dvd loader..and as for as i know there is no such thing as a dvd loader.elf is there? If so let me know i need a link to it. Or maybe somehow i could compress the swap magic dvd rom to 700 mb and burn it to a reg cd anybody got any ideas?

If you want to get something on a DVD to work with CD Loader, use this procedure:

1) Load CD Loader

2) Press Triangle to stop the drive and retract the laser

3) Take out Action Replay MAX and put in a high TOC DVD-ROM original(it will spin for a few seconds)

4) Press X, the disc will spin again

5) Once it stops spinning, swap it for your backup Swap Magic DVD

I wouldn't recommend that as that is piracy to download Swap Magic, so that's staying out of my guide.

Thx! Now umm about the piracy statement...maybe you havent realized this, but i cant bet every dollar i have that 80% of the people who are using your guide and searching for other ways to mod their ps2's are not doing it for the legit reason (backing up games). But i'm sure you know this, it would be wise to add a small disclaimer to your guide (at the beginning or end or w/e) stating that your guide is not meant to be condoned with illegal intent/purposes. Although some people will use it as they will, your purpose for putting together the guide would be understood.

*UPdate* I think i may of found the problem of why MasterChu's method didnt work for me. In the guide above when you explained how to load Swap Magic, when i retracted the laser and put in a high Toc ps2 game the game kept spinning...it never stopped spinning and i pressed X anyway just to see would it work but it said Error Validating Disc. I got 2 questions that i think has something to do with problem. When i retract the laser and put in dvd game i suppose to press triangle again right? I mean thats the only way to get the laser to load up game right? And do you think that the problem could be Cd Loader? I mean i got the right one...the one from Jax download link.

Okay, wait, I got a bit into a mixup last time. When you put in your game(your original DVD-ROM game) with the use of Triangle to retract the laser and stop the drive. Press Triangle again. The disc will spin and keep on spinning. You'll see "PS2 DVD" on the bottom left corner of your screen. Press X when you see that. The disc will spin some more and the screen will turn red. When that happens, look for the writing "Insert DVDR using EA method and press X to play" to appear at the top of the screen. Now look at your PlayStation 2(remember to keep the lid open) until your DVD-ROM original game stops. Swap for your Swap Magic backup and press X. Hopefully that'll work.

Everything seems to have been done right, you've used Triangle to change disc, you're using an original game(can't be copied), I don't know what else is wrong(hopefully you have a MOD that keeps the lid sensors tripped). Try a different version of CD Loader. You should also probably check the model number of your slim because there's the Version 12 that a very bad laser. Look under the console for a sticker that has the console's model number, region code, etc., then identify it using this procedure(each model number corresponds to a certain version):

Version 12:
SCPH-70011(Canada)
SCPH-70012(United States)
SCPH-70002(Oceania)
SCPH-70003(UK)
SCPH-70004(Europe)
SCPH-70000(Japan)

Version 13:
SCPH-70001(US & Canada)
SCPH-70004(Europe)
SCPH-70003(Australia)
SCPH-70002(Israel)
The warranty sticker is under the console and there's no more Phone Line.

Version 14A/14B/14C:
SCPH-75001(US & Canada)
SCPH-75004(Europe)
SCPH-75003(Australia)
SCPH-75002(Israel)

Chances are if you have a Version 12, its laser is probably half-dead. If not, then maybe, just maybe, your laser is dirty. There's a guide somewhere which tells you how to clean your slim's laser, athough I don't know where it is.

I should have two men by my side, you and Xhardc0re. He's the one who said that this exploit would be equal to the old exploit for fats. But, I want ALL of us to try out all the old things that could have been done with the Independence Exploit, myself included(even if my slim is equipped with no hard drive, not USB, and not IDE, which cannot be used on a Version 14). The only things I need to know are:

A) What was possible with the Independence Exploit.

B) How to do each thing(more specifically FTPing files from your computer to your PlayStation 2).

Like I said before, I have a bit of a problem with revealing this exploit to the modding scene. Wouldn't Sony try to find out who we are even if we didn't use our real names? Or maybe not, since now they're focusing on the PlayStation 3. Need a bit of explaination.

My console collection: Version 14A PlayStation 2(chipped), Version 7 PlayStation 2, PlayStation(both models), Wii, Gamecube, N64, Super NES(original from US and Japan and Mini), NES(front and top loader)Model 1 & 2 Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Atari 2600, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Master System(Model 1 and 2), Atari Flashback 1 & 2, FC Twin(2 in 1 NES/Super NES clone), GN Twin(2 in 1 NES/Genesis clone), Atari 7800, Intellivision II, TurboGrafx 16, GameBoy Color

YAY, i dont mind sharing my sidekickness with hardcore :) I downloaded independence exploit and i'm tweaking with it now. Ok, now as far as Sony poking around dont even worry about it. There are thousands of exploitations guides on the net...and not just for sony ps2 product. Remeber Sony isn't just a gaming company. I've seen exploits for just about every sony gaming product and regular products (dvd drives, dvd players, entertainment systems). Meaning Sony have more to worry about than your guide. Then they would run into the problem of finding out who you actually are, and although its possible its very very hard (i have a friends who hack forums) and they would most likely give up. But above all it wouldnt matter lol, you know why because your guide is only an exploit guide...there is nothing illegal about your guide. I've seen a many of websites with isos and roms availably to download. Bottom line is sony doesnt care...if they happen to run across a site with information on how to get illegal software such as that swap disc i mention earlier then they would probably take action. And the only thing they would do is ask that the guide be removed thats all. But you have nothing to worry about, and if you want to extra extra sure then add that disclaimer as i mention before to your guide. If you dont know how then let me know. Hey do you have msn messenger or yahoo messenger?
