How many times do I have to say it, DO NOT USE DVD-RW. It doesn't work well, plus, it puts unecessary strees on your PlayStation 2's laser. Get DVD-R or DVD+R, but STAY AWAY FROM DVD RE-WRITEABLES! Don't ask about them anymore, please, I've made my point, so please, use this info for your own good.

Wow! After a little hard work and alot of reading, it works! Thank you all so much for the bevy of info.

I have something to add if I may. I think I found a shortcut for pstwo slim users with USB sticks:

I don't use the PS2 Exploit Utility Disc at all. I simply load COGSWAP.ELF directly from the pendrive using ARMAX Media Player and
follow your directions on using Cogswap from there. Works great!

Am I missing something here? Is there an advantage to using the Exploit Disc regarding Memory Card storage or something? Or is the exploit simply to load COGSWAP.ELF? If so, it seems like overkill.

Also, is there a way around having to remove and replace the sensor tissue while using Cogswap? Is that what the "straw" method is? I'd like to keep the sensor disabled permanently, if possible.

yea i don't see the point either, i just load cdloader.elf from media player and do triangle, swap for high TOC game, triangle, x, swap for backup, x, and its fine; easier too

The latest Action Replay MAX(the one from 2004, v 3.36(says under the disc near the hole in the middle)) does not allow you to boot Cog-Swap. I tried it on V. 3.36 and stayed at a black MAX Media Player faded screen. Plus, using LaunchELF will also allow you to run homebrew code(ELFs on a USB Memory Stick, the actual LaunchELF disc, or a Memory Card) such as emulators, other media players, launchers like Cog-Swap, probably all the things you can do with the Fat Memory Card Exploit(haven't personally tested everything that could have been done with that one).

Gotcha, Ace. Thanks! I'll keep all of this in mind. Oh, and I certainly do have AR Max v3.30. Interesting.

I also have a few questions about playing PAL games on my NTSC pstwo slim V12. Is there version of COGSWAPLOADER that can run PAL games? Any other loadable ELF that can other than CDLOADER?

I'd use CDLOADER but can't get it to work. All goes well until the disc swap. Every High TOC PS2 game (original) that I try reads as a PS2 DVD in the bottom left corner, but when I press x, I get "Error Validating The Disc". I noticed other posters here had the same problem(including tdude511), but I did'nt see an explanation or resolution. Someone actually replied that it might be the media type! It's the original PS2 discs we're talking about, not backups.

I have succeeded in getting lower TOC games to prompt me for "Insert a DVDR by EA Method" in CDLOADER but, obviously the backup hangs up when I try to play it.

The funny thing is, as I stated before, the same games that give me "Error Validating The Disc" message in CDLOADER, work perfectly when I use COGSWAPLOADER. Any ideas?

Alright, i haven't been following this thread for awhile & would like a status update.

The Independence Expl0it was a way to use an ELF file & a trigger disc to play backup games without any modchip. $0ny was able to close the loophole when they designed the PS2 slim; ever since that time no one has been able to duplicate Indie Exploit. Until Ace_2 came along :) So it this working on CD & DVD games? I'd like to try it out on a few. Does it work on any of the High TOC DVD games?

Wow. Hey, were you able to test the FTPing and all that was able to be done with the Independance Exploit so I can validate your claim(haven't personnally tried, and I can't because I lost my USB Memory Stick and my Memory Card is full)?

If ur loading with cogswap properly, it SHOULD work. You have to load cogswap, then swap for a ps2 game on a cd, then swap for ur crash bandicoot game. if u burned wrong that may be it too. Did it come with a .cue and .bin file, or iso? if it came with cue and bin, open the cue with Nero and then burn, and it should work. Also, the cd game u use to boot the burned one should be equal or greater in size (TOC) than the one ur booting.

Thanx, ddmp for your response. I would prefer not to convert PAL to NTSC before burning but it certainly is one way of doing it. I did some more tinkering and came up with some interesting results. I stated in a previous post that the original PS2 dvd's that I was using for TOC swapping didn't work with cdloader but did with cogswap. That's fine but cogswap doesn't play PAL games in my NTSC console while cdloader does.

Here's what I found:

In cdloader, if I use a lower TOC game to get the "Insert dvd by EA method" screen, (again, because my higher TOC games consistently give me that "Error Validating The Disc" message), I can can then swap for the high TOC game with the triangle keys and load my backups. Whatever... The point is, I loaded a PAL game (TW07) this way and it loaded perfectly without choosing the PAL in cdloader. I don't know if this will help anyone else or not, but I found it interesting if nothing else.

Thanks again to everyone who responded. I love this site and for the most part, everyone here seems kind, courteous, and extremely helpful!

I am a noob

PS2 slim model
Smap Magic 3.6

Can someone please explain where I am going wrong.

I am trying to use the method Ace posted for playing PSX backups on PS2 and I get to where I configure Ulaunch to launch PS2 Browser, and then I change Disc Control to On, ok I am doing something wrong at this point. When I put in my high TOC PSX game, the tutorial says to wait until it stops spinning, but it never starts spinning. Is this because I have to switch Disc Control back to off because I have tried that also. He mentioned detected swap. How do I do this with the Magic Switch? Do I move the tab to the right over the sensor (for those that have used the Magic Switch) and of so at what point should I do this? I have been looking at several different forums, so I am not sure what the best way is to do this. Is Breaker Pro the best way or is it all a matter or opinion.

Basically what I need is a 100% noob proof way to play backup PSX games?

Thanks

I have the version with the so-called "anti USB programming", the Version 14, but the USB Memory Stick I have(used to-I lost it), a 256MB Verbatim Store'N'Go, worked no problem. Here's the thing, LaunchELF AND Action Replay MAX(MAX Memory, MAX Media Player) can bypass this programming, unlike CodeBreaker(I tested the USB Memory Stick while booting CodeBreaker, and it stopped the boot sequence until the Memory Stick was removed). So, as long as you have Action Replay MAX and uLaunchELF provided with PS2 Exploit Utility, and a good USB Memory Stick, you'll be able to use this exploit no problem.

hi Ace´s. i have this problem? i tried playin TOCA 3 online with a copy made off the original game, but i have to burn two disks, one patched and one unpatched. then i have to swicth disks when i get to the gamespy log in, but then i do this, swcth the disks at the login screen, but when i put the 2nd disk in the console just ticks and the screen locks up, so i cant get online. i have a v12 console with modbo infinity. i can playonline with other games copies just fine. if i block the lid sensor on my ps2 with something, would i be able to swicth disck without the console freezin? any ideas? thanks

Modbo, that sounds like a phony Matrix Infinity. Change your chip, that's all I can say. Get the Crystal Chip 1.1, it automatically patches DNAS IDs. You know something, you don't even need to use my guide if you have a chip. Replace you piece-of-garbage Modbo and replace it with the Crystal Chip 1.1.

Hi to Ace and all other Pal's
am new and cant completely understand actual working of these exploites so here i am describing my problem so u people can give me suggestion.

that i have a slimline model using Swap Magiv 3.6 with usbadvance and external IDE HD on USB Port.

I have changed two lenses in 9 months and now the third one is not detecting many DVDs.

Am booting PS by Swap Magic 3.6 and using usbadvacne on CD,

So i want to completely boot from my PS2 memory card/ flash drive and run usbadvance to load games from my HD.

I wanna do it as soon as possible because as i have mentioned that the lens is getting weak and weak, so i wanna do it before its completly dead.

Thanks in Advance.

Lethal_B- Wow, man, thanks. Now all I need, which I still haven't gotten, is a confirmation by xHardc0re, or any other member, that you could do everything you could have done with the Independence Exploit(I can confirm that you could launch any ELF program with my exploit).

kyniku- Try to see if you Modbo can turn itself off, because keeping the chip enabled will cause the DNAS authentication service to detect the chip. Otherwise, I can't help you, I'm no DNAS expert.

Blue_Bird- First off, make sure you don't have the SCPH-70012/70011 PlayStation 2, as those are known to have lasers that burn out prematurely, which may explain why you had to change 2 lasers lately.
The only way you can prevent the use of the laser is by having a chip installed(preferably a DMS4 SE Pro) and have a save named "BOOT" on your Memory Card which includes LaunchELF for it to boot(hold Triangle while booting the console). There is no way you cannot use your laser if you have no chip. Oh, also, if you have an SCPH-70012/70011/70001 PlayStation 2(if the SCPH starts with 75 or 77, this can't be done) you can buy an IDE hard drive add-on(preferably HD Combo) to solder onto your PlayStation 2's motherboard. So, no more discs, no more laser usage, except of course for PlayStation(1) games, which can't run off of hard drives. You would need HD Loader v 0.8b(it's free) to run games off of IDE hard drives(no USB enclosure needed).
