How many seeds were there? And were you actually registered on the tracker's website?
It also sounds as if it could be your connection. Do you have a firewall? How do you connect to the internet? Does your ISP block any ports? Which client do you use? Are you limiting your upload to 80% of your download rate?

It was Azureus that i was using this particular time. I dont have a firewall...i forwarded the ports..tried several...the common 6881-6889 and ive tried stuff in the 55000 range.
Yea i registered on the tracker site.
There were about 18 seeders
Also....its weird...when i DONT forward ports...uploads skyrocket (relative terms) to like 25-35 KB/s...but downloads stay around 5-6 KB/s..when forwarded...they both hover around 0 KB/s...

hey,
not a total newb here, but not far off...sorry to say. ANYWAY. been reading this forum for the last two days...read all first 10 pages..and last few pages as well...need some help. Ill try to be brief. Been trying all kinds of torrent clients...BitComet, BitTornado, BitLord, Azureus...cant get d/l above 2/3 kbps. MOst of the time its 0 down..0 up.
Heres some info: For BitTornado
I get the GREEN light
I have a Netgear WGR614
I run on Rogers Yahoo High speed in Toronto w/ that Motorola Surfboard modem
I have tried portforwarding (6881-6889)..and today tried (55001-55009)
I do not have a software firewall
DId a speedtest at dslreports (2543 kbps down...375 up)
For max uploads i keep around 25 kbps
I keep the thing on dsl/cable slow setting
I keep max uploads at 4
I have changed the port range in tornado to coincide with my forwarded ports
I keep UPnP port forwarding off in Tornado AND in my router settings
and lastly...i keep max peer connections around 50...but its been on default for the longest time with no results
I also have tried BitTorrent Downlaod Accelerator PRo...nothing
SAme thing with all the other clients....hope i didnt miss anything
Think you can help me out? Anything would be great. Thanks
All right. Just a bunch of suggestions, because I do not know. I will mention stuff you've tried and know about but I'll mention it anyway in case someone else is looking and has problems. I am not an expert, but I've been messing with this stuff long enough and have tried out a lt of stuff - i did not even know what port forwarding meant when I started out.
I run Netgear WGR614a (that's the 54 Mbps model, right?), and use BitTornado and it works great for me, and use Torrent Spy almost exclusively (forget what that guy said, Torrent Spy works great).
My download speeds - real popular torrents can be 1 Mbps (1000 Kbps or 125 KB/s) and even 2 Mbps, but if I get 600 kbps (about 77 KB/s?) I have to be happy about things. A couple of times I farted when I got 3 Mbps. I do use Win XP's SP2 all updated. I also have a cable modem. (I have cable 400 Kbps up and 4000 down which = 50 KB/s up and 500 KB/s down which = 4 Mbps down)
Your router is a firewall and you need to port forward in it. Also I have read some issues before with a few DSL modems and they actually can also be firewall modems - like a router which is a firewall, you have to log int them and port forward or do something in the settings. - and by default your router has UPnP turned off, and in BitTornado by default UPnP is on. I run with UPnP turened off in both and it doesn't seem to matter. Plus in the router I use RIP1 which probably only effects your home network anyway but I am not sure.
Max peers to 50 - why? 100 at least I'd say, 200 better, or unlimited.
You say "For max uploads i keep around 25 kbps. I keep the thing on dsl/cable slow setting. I keep max uploads at 4" OK that's a mis-type there but i understand you mrean max upload speed at 25 KB/s. (25 KB/s = 200 Kbps). OK it doesn't matter DSL cable fast or slow - that only adds in amounts into the boxes, you can change them after that. I don't know what your max upload speed is thaqt yur ISP says you have. Make sure it is set no higher than 80% of what they say you have there in Toronto. If it's 200 Kbps then 25 KB/s is 100%, so you need to tick it down to 20 KB/s in BitTornado. If a setting is too high in the upload thing you will bog down because the torrent program needs that 20% to do it's thing in and so you reach your setting number and boom problems because it isn't 80% as mentioned.
Also remember that if you change some of the settings in BitTornado, like the port range, it will not take effect until the next time you open BitTornado.
If you run Norton Anti-virus 2005 you are running a firewall as part of it even thought it never tells you so.
You could try this too: Google a mod called "lvlord" and when it gets to the part about connections set it to maybe 100. You'll have to ignore Win XP's warning - but rememeber it will mess with your registry and as always there is a chance that it could mess you up. ---> However since you don't run SP2, I don't think you need this mod because you are not limited..
ports 6881-6889 - probably no problem, but since everyone in the world knows torrent programs are using these ports, I wouldn't put it past some ISPs to mess you those ports. But rememeber this is a setting that if you change it in BitTornado, that it doesn't take effect until you shut down BitTornado then open it again. Plus if yoy only download one torrent at a time, you don't need a range of ports - one port will do.
Finally, some torrent circles you are in, despite the conntection numbers, can just plain be dogs. For some reason they just never get going like you think they should (as far as speed).
And final final and unrelated - a TIVO or similar DVR is the greatest invention of modern man - I had no idea how great it makes things for TV watching until I got one recently..

Hey, biggermac
the max conections to peers - 50 was something that some dude suggested 10's of pages back.....unless i read it wrong....ill try 200 like you say
BUT...i think i may have solved the problem...
some dude on another forum recomended port 1720 or 1755 for Rogers customers and it seems to be working. I was sitting around 250 KB/s for one torrent and then 90 KB/s for The Brothers Grimm...HUGE improvement over 2/3 KB/s...both using Azureus.
well see if that was a fluke or not in a few days

That max connections things to 50 was probably a suggestion by me, but was meant for cases using Windows 98 and some situations.
But glad to hear you have solved the problem. I now have learned the situation in Canada too...

My skepitcal side is emerging now. You say "Download 1631 KB/s" & "Upload 14 KB/s". I have Comcast and (what I thought was) a pretty good download speed of 4000 Kbps (4 Mbps).
But the best I have ever achieved (I use BitTornado) with a popular torrent is 3 Mps (3000 Kbps - happened twice). But 1 Mbps is more like it with popular torrents (and of course less for not so popular). And a rarer, but it happens, download at 2 Mbps sustained.
So I am wondering - your tagline of 1631 KB/s. ...1631 KB/s = 13,048 Kbps, or approximately 13 Mbps. So I am wondering what ISP you use and which plan you subsribe to that like a 15000 Kbps (15 Mbps) download speed. So could you can clear me up on this point? Do you own a server tied into a big fat line without going through an ISP?

Ok, you got me. That is the MAX speed ive ever gotten, but not what i regularly get. I normally get (on decently seeded torrents) 750-1000 KB/s on a 8 mbit line which increases to a 10 mbit with my router. The 1600 i got was using my wireless connection on the laptop connected to the line at home. Actually using the wireless i normally get 900-1200 KB/s, i dont know why the speed increases, but i like it ;)

After googling around I have done the following which seems to be working (from an average of around 20KB/s to between 30 and 100). This is for Bittorrent, I don't use any other clients.
Go to www.portforward.com and find out how to configure your router (the box that connects you to the internet). However instead of using the ports 6881-6889 use another nine or 10 consecutive numbers (ports) between 0 and 65535 (something like 30000 or whatever). This is because ports 6881-6889 are being messed about with by ISPs? (from what people have posted on other forums).
In Bittorrent itself click on view, then settings, then network. In the 'starting at port' change the value to the first number you used when you did your portforwading (the first of your 10 consecutive numbers).
Now you need to tell the firewall on your computer that the ten consecutive numbers or ports that you chose should be considered exceptions. Go into windows firewall (in control panel). Click on exceptions. click 'add port' and enter the first of the ten consecutive ports you chose. Repeat for each of the ten consecutive ports. You might want to call each one 'Bittorrent 1', 'bittorrent 2' or something like that.
Finally if you have broadband like me then you want to set your max upload rate to something around 20KB/s. However just slide it around until you find the optimum number.
Seriously though, read the tutorial properly on portforwading.com and then you'll have a vague idea of what a port is, which helps. Also. use google and try and figure it out for yourself, which is what i did.

Hey guys im new to this forum. Well recently i changed my dsl router to a 2wire router so that my family can use it with multiple ethernet outlets. After having my router and internet operational. i've decided to do my daily BiTornado dls. after few mins i was shocked at how my dling speed is so slow compared to my old one. my old router was a speedstream (1 ethernet outlet). everytime it would be dling at 150kbs and uploading less than 10kbs. im sorry if this sounds like a leecher than a sharer but ive jus set it to automatic. it would dl the around 60-kbs if there were only even 1 seeder and a couple peers. but anyways it was great until i accidentally spilled water onto it. so i had to change the router right away. ok coming back this, the situation is that i don't know why my internet speed is dling at 1kbs than its usually 150kbs. the upload speed is the same. so i am wondering why? and how can i make it faster? i have windows xp, sp2 installed, 2wire router. thanks in advance

xCrusierx,
From what you are saying, it could be your DSL modem is acting like a router (is a router also). A router is a hardware firewall all by itself, no software. A firewall allows outgoing but restricts incoming by closing ports. There are like 65000 (plus) ports I beleive.
In your torrent program it tells you what port or ports it is using. In older torrent programs this could be ports something like ports 6881 - 6899.. So in my router which runs my home network I would have to log into the router and "port forward" that range of ports (port forward = punch a hole in so incoming can get in). You also are probably running a software firewal and would also have to fix this (Windows XP might have just "excluded" it's own firewall from engaging when you run your torrent program).
Without firewalls, evil stuff people wrote would get into our computers via the Internet. By Port-forwarding as i mentioned above, you are slightly weakening your defense.

so what your saying is that i should add/foward ports 6881-6889 to my router. if so i would like to know how to forward or add these port. would it be by going to my network connections, selecting the corresponding connection i use, right click properties, click advance tab, click windows firewall setting, click exceptions tab, and add ports. im not sure this is the way but inform me if i'm wrong. thanks for the advice

That's for forwarding to Windows Firewall (Which IMO should be turned off, because it's a nuiscance and only creates the illusion you are being protected) State which router you have, and we will help.

That would also be for his Windows firewall yes, and yes should just have his torrent exe program file "excluded" or whatever it is called, but, since a router is a firewall itself, admittedly a it is piece of hardware, but it is a firewall all the same, a router has to have some port forwarding done for it to work for torrents.
If your DSL modem allows more than one computer to connect directly to it, I think you said it did, then it is a router too. Me I have a separate router (brand NetGear), 3 computers go to the router, the router is the brain of my home network it knows who is who and what connection is what, then I have one cable going to the cable modem.
As far as my cable modem, it is not a router nor needs port forwarding - it thinks it is connecting to one computer but instead it is to the router.. I have to port forward the port or ports in my router that I use for BitTornado..
Make sure you know what ports your torrent program uses before port forward 6881 - 6899 or whatever. If it is not using those then it would be a waste of time to port forward those. Make sure your dsl modem is indeed a router too..
I cannot tell you how to log into your router r DSL modem if it is also a router. The instructionsw for my Netgear router came with it. I log into it as if it is a web address, then my menu is there to port forward and a bunch of other things, like turn on UPnP, gicve a permanent home network address to a computer, etc..

aside from a few of you i think your problm is that there are just too many requests for the same program
if im downloading X and is 1 gig big and there is only one suplier for X and about 10 people that need it that cuts down your share from say 100Kb/sec to 10 Kb/sec
so just wait for more supliers

Hey all, I have a problem in opening ports...
1. The Gateway number is 10.0.0.138 and i typed it in the browser and entered the page of the router
(B-FOCuS Router 312+ ECI -- Firewall Router ADSL)
and the username/password -> Admin/Admin
2. And i went to Advanced -> Port Forwarding, and tried to move the blocked ports (the rules) to the "Applied Rules" list, it told me: Error: Error found on page!
So i tried to make a new rule called "torrent" and the ports:
start port: 6881 end port: 6889
but it told me again: "Error : Error found...."
Here's the picture of my page when it told me about the error
The second day i tried many times again to allow these ports but uselessly... :S
thanking you in advance

I do not beleive torrents work as straight forward as this. But the torrrent style of peer to peer networking was written to be be superior to the older style (Kazaa, Bearshare, etc)
(Disclaimer: I am not an expert and don't claim that I am positive to be correct.)
We'll use your example to explain.. Say that there is one seed and 10 peers.
(a seed is one full copy - there must be at least one or you will stall out along with evryone else at some point)
(a peer is those trying to get a full copy)
So, 5 people out of the 10 are 75% retrieved, 3 people are 50% retrived, and 2 are at 25% retrieved. Now you come along and start up. Torrents require you to share to get anything but a trickle of a download. You'll generally (not always) start out with a very very slow download. This is because you have nothing to contribute back at this point, and your upload will be very slow too at this point.
But perhaps 5 minutes in (or 10 mintutes in, or even more) you begin to get enough of a piece that is delegated to you, so you too now can share. Your upload speed will begin to increase a little bit, and so a bit after this your download speed begins to increase. This will probably escalate over the next several minutes.
Even though there is only one complete copy, you still can get pieces from anyone ahead of you (or anyone at all perhaps??).
Yes - the more seeds the better. And in the above example, if you are in that front 5 group all at 75%, maybe it'll be slower going for you than the newer guy can get..

bigshot20, your picture has stretched the forums page to an uncomfortable width.. I don't like horizontal scrolling..
Anywho - I am unfamiliar with your modem/router/whatever it is, (guessing here) but from that Port Forwarding page you show, I'd try selecting "Games" and trying to port forward from that point, because online games where you have a program running that connects, ususally need some port forwarding. There might be a pre-made list of games, but there should also be a customizing button or command where you can specify ports.
