I just had to reply this thread since this is (I think) the only place on the net that talks about how to use a pendrive to backup memory. Well I have tried it and it works.
Something very important that I have noticed was that many people seemed to be using the wrong version of AR. You are supposed to use ACTION REPLAY MAX EVO EDITION if it doesn't say EVO then it is probably not going to work. E V O!
Here is what I did:
1) I am not sure if there is a limit on how big the pendrive has to be, so I went with what a lot of people said and I bought a sandisk pendrive 128 (making sure that it is USB 1.1 backwards compatible) and format it into FAT. Please be noted to NOT use FAT32 they ARE different. I have noticed that a lot of people don't read carefully enough and miss the main point.
2) I also downloaded PS2 save builder if you want to download save data from the internet. If you don't have the program, Read the thread, madhive posted a link)
3) Put the pendrive in any USB slot on the PS2 and Load AR max evo
4) After that it should be pretty straight forward. Go to the memory card manager, which is the second icon counting from left to right. Once you enter you should be able to see your memory card and the pendrive. Click on any of them and do what you want to do :)
One thing I should note is that when you download a save data from the internet you have to make sure that the file end with ****.MAX. If not use the PS2 save builder and save it as a "max" file type. Now you can go ahead and copy the file from your pendrive to your memory card.
NOW, do not get too hasty because we aren't done YET. after you succesfuly copy the file to your memory card you need to uncorrupt the data. There is an option in AR that allows you to uncorrupt the data. I am guessing that what they mean with uncorrupt is to uncompress it to the PS2 memory card file type. Once uncorrupted you can go ahead and delete the corrupted data, becuase you don't need it anymore :)
I read that it is not recommended to delete the files using the AR.
So if you want you can restart and delete the corrupted data file the original way.
Well, I hope that this will help a few people who are confused on how to do this trick. I also want to mention that I did this on my slim PS2, cheers :)

Well I've got a couple pen drives, all are formatted to FAT. One is 128MB, one is 256MB, and one is actually a card reader that takes Smart Media... I even tried with a FAT formatted 16MB smart media.
There has to be something else that's necessary, since AR MAX EVO sees all of these devices as 4GB (4 million Kb) drives and says "unknown error occured trying to copy file".
I'm unclear on what is necessary, but there has to be something else.
Maybe it's my MOD chip? I use an Apple, on a v4 PS2. Other cd's such as the PS2Reality media player that let you swap CD's... the second disc never appears. That's something I've gotten used to with the Apple - could that be holding this program back? Apple is made by the same people that make Duo.

Well, after some reading through this, I managed to get the USB flash drive working.
And just to reiterate what some people have said and also adding to it...
- there's not really such thing as "USB 1.1 backwards compatible". ALL USB 2.0 drives are compatible with USB 1.x or whatever the older versions are. It's just the speed difference when transferring/reading files off the USB flash drive. USB 2.0 is a lot faster than USB 1.x, you'll see the difference if you have a computer with USB 1.x slots versus the 2.0 slots.
- you NEED the Action Replay Max EVO Edition. I have checked and proven this myself, it wouldn't work with the normal AR Max.
- once loaded and USB plugged in, it's the second icon on the left to click, then you'll be forwarded to this devices menu, and if you see the blue USB flash drive icon, you're good. Otherwise, your drive likely won't work.
- for USB flash drives: I've heard this from a lot of people, and myself included, that Lexar flash drives are the best out there in terms of PS2 compatibility. Other flash drives seem to be kind of iffy or not all the different types within the brand name work. I'm almost 100% sure that ALL Lexar drives will work. So save yourself the grief and go buy a cheap 32mb drive so you can use it (if you're planning for using it for PS2 only, of course, if you want a flash drive for work or anything, buy a bigger one, 256+).

excuse my english, i'm from spain
i've downloaded ARMAX from http://www.megaupload.com/es/?d=5M62SGGE, then i uncompressed the .rar archive, i used alcohol 120's image finder, furthermore i used the image burning wizard and selected PlayStation2 as data type. it's recommended to burn the image at low speed. it's NOT the EVO one, but it works as well.
i've swap magic 3.6 to boot the cd.
at firs i had the same problem as pstrchild several times: "unknown error" when it gets to the writing portion; but after using the HP USB formatter (ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp27001-27500/SP27213.exe) suggested previously with the corresponding indication mentioned i got my "pen drive" (AIRIS 1GB mp3 player usb2.0) working.
i hope it may help you

Ok, I finally got this to work as well.
For everyone having the "unknown error when writing" problem, please read this carefully.
It all has to do with how the drive is partitioned.
I thought, at first, that it had to do with how the drive was FORMATTED. It doesn't. What the HP tool does is throw away the partitions that are on the USB key, and make new ones.
I say... just use the tool. It's not perfect - I had to unplug my HP printer to get it to work, because the printer has a card reader in it and that was freaking out the tool - but it does work.
I haven't booted into DOS yet to run FDISK and see what the partitions look like on a key that DOES work versus a key that DOESN'T. But I'm sure it's something silly like it sets them up as primary versus extended, or marks them as active, or SOMETHING. I mean, when you format a data drive in XP or Win2k, I seriously doubt that it gets marked as the "active partition", because you're never going to boot it! So I suspect it's something like that. Simple, but overlooked.
Perservere, people! I've gotten ALL my USB devices to work this way!

OK here's my problem. I'm using AR MAX version 3.x and it recognizes my USB drive fine. However, it's not recognizing my memory card. In the selection screen the USB key is in blue and the memory card is displayed but it's in red and I can't access it. As well, when I co to uncrunch the file It shows a memory card in slot one but it doesn't say "Uncrunsh to MC1" It just says "Uncrunch" please help. It's a brand new memory card. : \

ALL flash sticks work with the PS2. It's good if you get one that works out-of-box because it was partitioned correctly, but if you just use the HP formatting tool they ALL work. ;)

@ Gurm, I've used my PNY Attache 512mb flash stick out of box and it won't work with my PS2. I will try out the HP formatting tool though. I'll edit back with results.
Nope, it doesn't work. I formatted it with the HP formatting tool and used the FAT file system. The Memorex one I showed earlier works out of box.

Ok this might be a little off-topic, but does anyone know which cheat device is more reliable when it comes to transferring saves around - action replay max evo or xploder v5. I 've seen from many customer reviews that the ar max has a lot of corruption issues that f up the memcard. As for the xploder, well, AFAIK there isn't much info regarding its memory manager.
Please get back asap anyone please as I really don't kno which one to go for!

Ok, I tried this and I think everything is going good.......until I swap it into my PS2. My problem is that the screen flickers like a very old tv does. I used Nero instead of blind write because the "write" button on Blindwrite5 was grayed out.
I have been having trouble with my Sharkport lately, and every time I download gamesaves from a website; it ends up being corrupt. Dont know why because this was the first time I ran into a problem.
Any ideas???
Thanks for any/all help!!

Yeah, the screen flickering like an old tv... is probably because your AR MAX is in PAL and you're in NTSC, or vice versa!
